Is Math Invented or Discovered? | Scientific Controversies

  • “The enormous usefulness of mathematics in the natural sciences is something bordering on the mysterious… there is no rational explanation for it,” wrote Nobel Laureate Eugene Wigner. There are mathematical descriptions of natural phenomena on all scales: Fibonacci series in flowers, logarithmic spirals in snails, fractals in mountain ranges, parabolas in home runs, and pi in the spherical shape of stars, planets, and bubbles. But is math discovered in nature or is it invented by humans and imposed on an agnostic reality? Will mathematics always be able to unlock the mysteries of the universe, or will we come to an end of its utility?
    Join our Director of Sciences Janna Levin as she hosts our guests Rafael Nuñez and Max Tegmark in a conversation to challenge our beliefs on mathematics-discovered or invented-and to question if mathematics does in fact provide a fundamental, beautiful structure to the universe.

    Wow, that kid at the end was super-articulate. You couldn't even get me up in front of that many people, at that age.

    _read Jacob Klein, he being the MAVERICK of this topic. He is one of the founders of St John's College; studied under Heidegger, Husserl as well as Schrodinger and Planck! Klein was a scholar of Plato and understood the differences between ancient and modern thinking better than anyone_ : )

    Why couldn't the meetup last longer, let them explore concepts while getting your PP points across as well, why the rush? This was great and could've been greater without the artificial times-up, gotta end it here.

    At 58th minute mathematical structure where is only two categories (Now and Future) would be Markov Property.

    1 + 1 = 2. 1 - 1 = 0. And everything else is a variant and while we have interesting variants we haven’t made any new ones yet.

    Discovered is - was it always there , but nobody realized it! Invent - it was never there!

    Funny how people need it to be one or the other when it is clearly a paradox. Not an actual valid question.

      But there is nothing in this conversation that would necessitate your conclusion. In fact Max, for the most part confirms the invention thesis in every response. His favorite strategy is to demonstrate invention and then add, but that doesn't mean it's invented.

    Discovered!, It is integral to the natural laws of the universe!

      Shouting doesn't improve your argument. 'Law of the universe' is itself a metaphoric (invented) projection of our experience of regularity - providing we can apply a formula that describes what we see and can predict what we'll see.

    As a layman, I believe that mathematics was Definitely discovered. I know the Great inventor, Himself because all things that exist was through him, by him and for him. This is the only begotten Son of God, Jesus Christ. Tesla was extraordinarily gifted, I believe because the Lord God enabled him, in part for the sakes of humanity as a whole
    Purposely created within the brilliant mind of Nikola Tesla

      Not really. I just wanted to drop a gentle reminder about what is truth and the frail narratives by mere mortals that will believe anything they are told

    • @santacruzman
      @santacruzman Před rokem

      @@jimmiejones3997 JJ, the frailest of all human narratives is the one of pure speculation - that of a sky daddy - an obvious projection of parental authority, and an obvious invention of ancient men. It is fundamentally metaphoric in nature. That is, we understand the abstract entity in terms of some aspect of human experience. In this case, an authoritative other, or a projection to temporarily abate ignorance.

    • @jimmiejones3997
      @jimmiejones3997 Před rokem

      @@santacruzman well there you go then. Many people spend their lives speculating about truth. Thankfully many come to knowledge by seeking from God. that is the beginning of all pure wisdom

    • @santacruzman
      @santacruzman Před rokem

      @@jimmiejones3997 Pure BS rather. Faith-based cognition will really mess with your ability to process rationally. Wisdom comes from employing good reasons over time (lots of experience).
