  • Coming soon to BBC One, the six-part drama The Trial of Christine Keeler takes viewers behind the headlines of a real-life scandal to examine the human stories of those involved. Written by BAFTA Award-winning novelist and screenwriter Amanda Coe (Apple Tree Yard, Room at the Top, Life in Squares), the series takes a look at the chain of events involved in what became known as the Profumo affair.
    Sophie Cookson (Kingsman: The Secret Service, Gypsy, Red Joan) stars in the title role as Christine Keeler, the 19-year-old who was caught in the middle of a story involving sexual and cultural politics. Ben Miles (The Capture, The Crown, The Last Post) plays British politician John Profumo, known more commonly as Jack. The drama, distributed outside of the U.S. by Keshet International, is set in 1960s Britain.
    Cookson and Miles spoke to TV Drama Weekly’s Mansha Daswani about the challenges of playing characters based on the real people involved in the scandal, while Coe shares what research went into bringing a fresh perspective to this story.

    What a shame Christine didn’t get to see this brilliant adaptation which for once gives a sympathetic and kinder view of her story

      Yes, and only two years too late as well. I know she was alerted when production got the green light, so I hope she was told of the female writing/directing/producing, or at least the BBC'S intentions to give her a voice.

      Sorry but you don't know what you're talking about! "This brilliant adaptation" gives a hostile and malicious view of her story! The creators of the series relied mainly on books and materials published by people who hated Keeler, and completely ignored the autobiographies she published during her lifetime, which inevitably presents her genuine point of view. Apparently, placing her as a main character in the series is a cunning way of the creators to mask their hostile position towards her!

      As someone who has seen all six episodes of the trail of Christine Keeler, and also read her autobiographies, I see no reason for her to like this series and not hate it! The creators of the series ignored her autobiographies, which presents her point of view, and relied mainly on books and materials published by people who hated her!!
      However, you and I never know what would she think of the trail of Christine Keeler, and the way it is presents.

    I remember this as a boy and how everyone was talking about it. Watched this and was thrilled by all the performance's, Sophie, Ben, Emilia and James were just brilliant in this sad but riveting tale. A tale about the "old establishment" wanting their cake and eating it, corruption and how innocent naive people can be scapegoated and destroyed. A very very sad story, and it still goes on today, political and royal scandals galore, cover-ups, corruption and intrigue. The "rot" definitely starts at the top. Bravo to all in this amazing series, I hope it has shed some light and understanding on Christine Keeler's character and her naivety as to what she was slowly sinking into. . .RIP Christine, Mandy and Stephen.

    Sophie plays the main character and yet this interview constantly cuts her out of frame whenever the male actor is answering a question and shows both actors when Sophie is answering questions. Poorly thought out considering the heart of the show is how Christine was often considered only an accessory to the events when told from the perspective of the men involved and the show is meant to more accurately portray her importance to the events being described. Maybe they should reconsider how to shoot these interviews.

    I only tuned in halfway as not a story which interested me but I read an article about the tragic “fit up” of Stephen Ward so tuned in and James Norton just stole every scene he was in which made ep 6 a bit of an anti-climax and good to see Ben Miles from Coupling again.

    James stole the show and every single scene he was in. At first I thought he was lovely but just a tad too smiley and then by episode 4/5 I loved him and my heart broke for ‘his’ fate. On another note, I don’t think the portrayal of Christine was that good - she appeared like a dim and disloyal person in this film. Ben is a great actor. The film should have been called ‘The trial of the scapegoat Stephen Ward’ or something like that. That’s how strong James’ portrayal was. Poor Stephen.

    It's an excellent show. But the success of it, despite all the heavyweight actors involved, belongs to James Norton, who is seriously moving as Stephen Ward. The problem for me is that Sophie Miles plays Christine as a manipulative girl without a brain in her head. My guess would be that the real Christine was much more aware of what was going on. And I will wonder forever how a production this caliber, put Ben Miles in the worst hairpiece in TV history. He is a very good actor and he didn't need it.

    • @phekach
      @phekach Před rokem

      It's not Sophie's acting that portrays Christine this way - it's Amanda Coe's script! The script puts Keeler as a main character but presents her from the perspective of her haters and not from her own perspective! She is both narrator and main character, but this is not Keeler's real life point of view!!

  • @fddooley1
    @fddooley1 Před 3 lety +2

    The unknown fact for me and (I can remember the case, I'm 75yrs) is the personality of Christine. The script points to her ignorance and her willingness to jump into danger. Christine seems wildly determined to destroy herself with no discernment on her part. At the time she would have been labelled 'a brainless twit'. Christine very much a product of her family environment.
