sonicfreak04 Sure, the bird part of him would be light (considering that bird bones are hollow and honeycomb-shaped to make flight easier), but what about the horse part of him? That had to be heavy!
Anyway, another great review and a fantastic collab. Nice to see a native New Yorker enthused about giving a grand tour of Equestria's version of his homeland. I've never been to New York City, so this a good way to show the comparisons between the two places.
I kinda agree with the generosity issue SQ had. Being good doesn't necessarily mean that good things will happen to you. However, doing good things can encourage other people to do the same, which can mean good things can happen to you. But the best kind of generous acts are the kinds where you don't know if you're rewarded directly by your good deeds; if you are rewarded directly, it may be tempting to boast about what you did, which makes it sound less like a good deed and more like a "look at me!" kind of deed.
As for Spike being "missing" during the second half of the plot, he was never lost in the streets. You can see him sleeping in a bed when Rarity runs out with the newly-finished dresses and carrying the luggage (again) when they leave Manehattan. Kinda surprised that I didn't see anyone else point that out.

the ending with cocoa really hits home for me. i have a friend of mine who i found out that i had made a huge impact on their life, namely i saved it without knowing i had. simply by coming into their life and being their friend gave them something to live for. it is very possible that small acts of kindness and generosity can indeed make a large impact on someone else even if it seems like a small act to you.
Funny thing.
The appearance of the male alicorn actually explains away most of the "Princess can't catch a cab" bit. It actually says that alicorn=/=royalty. Then again, it could just be a Pegasus/unicorn, where the horn is more cosmetic than functional. But it basically says that seeing a pony with wings and horn doesn't automatically mean you're seeing royalty.

Looking back, how could Suri have won in the first place? The main 2 outcomes I can think of are
A: Plays out like in the show, more or less
B: She wins the competition, and ponies flock to her for the stolen dresses. The dresses made from a fabric that took months to make, that she doesn't know how to recreate, that she doesn't have the time to recreate even if she knew how, and that she is probably fresh out of. (She made like, 6 dresses. That's not nearly enough for all the ponies that would want them, but it probably took up all the fabric she got from Rarity.) And she can't just get more from Rarity because Rarity knows her now, she won't just give her more, that would be stupid! Heck, some news ponies might investigate and find out that the fabric and design was stolen in the first place.
There is literally no way Suri could have won in any situation unless she was EXTREMELY lucky and the Mane 6 were EXTREMELY forgiving, both at the same time.
Anyways, I also would have liked to see Karma unfold upon Suri (Getting banned from future contests?) but I don't mind it missing too much.
And if what has been said implys, then Suri doesn't even make the damn dresses. Coco does! So unless Suri finds a new workhorse (no pun intended), then she screwed.

TheBronyCrafter I have a question about her. Is she one of those examples of Moe Characters like Fluttershy? Because she seems to be that.
I think that she's a shy type character, but imo she's more empowered than Fluttershy and it was simply her job and her environment in Manehattan that caused her. She's a more despondent character than Fluttershy, but she was shown that generosity was even there in Manehattan, and that eliminated that despondence. Which I think will cause her character to become less of a Moe character and one that might pay forward the generosity model

manehattin to me is nearly perfect, nearly, it should have more ponies about and bigger crowds but people seem to keep forgetting that the mlp fim universe has 3 different races that use vastly different things and there is also magic so one city could be 100% different to another city. cloudsdale looks very greek, ponyville is very rural, almost medieval peasant, with the hey roofs, the unicorn made crystal empire is made of gems and crystals.

Hey, i just noticed something...
Ever since this season started, every episode that focuses on one of the main six has ended with a specific object shining a rainbow glow. Rarity's ended with that rainbow fabric tube glowing, Rainbow dash's ended with her new medal glowing.
Also, at one moment on these episodes, both rarity and rainbow dash had a rainbow glow on their eyes.
I have the feeling this is not a coincidence, and has something to do with the finale. They said this would be the first season with a continuous storyline.
What if these objects with a rainbow glow are the six keys needed to open that mysterious box?
Does anyone else here feel the same way?

I think Coco's gift to Rarity of the rainbow thread is going to be a lot more important than it may seem at first. I really feel that's the first of the six keys to the box at the Tree of Harmony. In order to obtain the keys, each of the Mane 6 have to use their individual Element to inspire the same quality in others, and then have the key given to them in return. It's a far deeper concept for the show than to simply have them going off on a quest to find the keys. And, at least as of this episode, none of them realize they're obtaining the keys. It's a pretty brave concept for a 'kids show', actually. One of the reasons I'm very impressed with S4 so far.

First of all Silver squill, my sister, mother, and I ADORE your videos and the intelligent arguments and references you make in them. If I ever meet you in rea life I would love to try and have a debate with you or a discussion in regards to an episode we have differences on. Unfortunately, I’m not an analyst and don’t make videos, so that’s a hypothetical thing.
Second, in regards to debates, I would like to prose a counterpoint to one of the points you make near the end of the episode.I have an argument as to the benefit of having such an immediate boomerang affect. Children are easily influenced when young, and this episode at once teaches children the importance of being careful while being generous, but at the same time it also teaches how one should and shouldn’t react towards someone generous actions and gifts. By showing the immediate boomerang effect with the city ponies, the kids are influenced to be good back towards those who are generous to them. Siri (did I spell her name right) is of course an example of someone who takes advantage, and kids are shown how they shouldn’t act, and the pain that can cause to other people. I personally don’t see too much of a problem with the immediate boomerang effect of the city ponies because it shows kids how one should act in regards to being given generous offers or even regular acts of kindness. Now, I’m not going to say that how fast it happened is believable, but I think it works to the advantage that here, the kids see such a fast reaction. I believe that showing immediate affects can influence children in a positive light to try and act a certain way when someone does something kind for them. It’s easy for someone to tell a child how they should react, but it’s another thing entirely to be able to give an example and show its impact.
Now this is just my opinion. If anyone would like to give a counter argument to debate this idea, I am all up for hearing it. Either way, I still LOVE this video and all your videos Silver Quill! Sorry this comment was so long and probably repetitive. Keep being awesome you amazing hippogriph (I couldn’t come up with alliteration that would fit).
I love this episode because it made me love Rarity in the same way as the other characters. Since the begining I dislike Rarity but this episode made me feel so close to her. A lot of people taked advantage of my generosity in the past, and made me change on a way that I hate a lot, but Rarity showed me that there is another way, just because someone did something evil with your generosity it doesn't mean everybody else is giong to do it nor you have to change or hide the your real self. This episode made me change back and mature my old me.
I'm surprised you guys didn't mention the rainbow spool of thread. Did you notice how it shimmered in the colors of the other ponies? Also, that beam of techni-colored light that emitted from Rarity's eyes when she abandoned the fashion show to search for her friends? I think this is the writers hinting at us that by teaching an outside pony/character about one of the elements is a way of retrieving a "key" for that locked box. How that spool of thread serves as a key (or if it even IS a key) is still yet to be determined.
So...Twilight will have to teach someone magic?
Silverizael I think her element can now be summed up more as "leadership" so it would make more sense for her so teach another pony leadership... maybe AppleBloom? If say Sweetie and Scoots were having a fight and Bloom had to show leadership and bring them together again? Just a thought.

I'm just poking fun at myself. I draw my own vectors and animated them, which is why producing these videos often takes a full week.
I'm always grateful when members of the fandom put up vector backgrounds, as those are a true lifesaver.

I think I actually spotted a obscure reference in this episode, during the song sequence. A mare with a typewriter cutie mark burst into the office of a stallion with a very chiseled, square jaw, large eyebrows, and slicked back hair. I think it was a reference to Thoroughly Modern Millie, a movie starring Julie Andrews. The protagonist is a girl named Millie who is working as a secretary and trying to marry her boss, who bares a striking resemblance to the stallion.

At first fluttershy was my fav, but slowly Rarity became my fav, just because of her complex character and humour.
I can also relate to her the most, I'm someone who in my role, I often am conflicted between showing generosity to people I know and love, and feeling like I'm giving all the time when nobody steps up to help me. It can be a struggle to keep yourself feeling like if part of you to be that way when people don't show the same thing back.

This isn't just my favorite Rarity episode, it's my favorite Rainbow Power Whatever We're Calling It Now Episodes. It showed me Rarity's character and I actually enjoyed it, as opposed to the normally predictable, prissy, and unappealing character that we normally get. Rarity often gets the short end of the stick with her character constantly being so inconsistent. While in this episode, it showed that side of her, it was done so in a manner that she learned a huge lesson. It moved her from number five on my mane six favorite list to being tied at number four.

I thought that the last part of the ending added an essential part to the meaning behind the episode. At first I thought they were actually going to subvert the competition cliche entirely by ending the episode with everyone going to the play, and in that moment, I felt like something was missing. We had been shown the obvious moral that friends come before competitions, but we had not been shown any benefit to being generous to those that will take advantage of you. I was actually curious to see HOW it could be a good thing to be generous to people outside your circle of friends, since purely selfless generosity is actually kindness, and putting your friends before your work is loyalty. We hadn't been shown an actual meaningful answer to generosity itself. The last scene resolved this by showing us that generosity inspires others, even if they weren't on the receiving end of the generosity. In contrast to kindness, being generous to everyone in every circumstance regardless of who's on the receiving end sets a great example that everyone can follow.

One thing that bugged me about this episode was part of the ending.
Rarity got the extra show for her friends by agreeing to do the costumes for the next performance, but she then later hands that off to Coco. That's a finger to the performers who put on the show when they didn't have to.
They did so in exchange for Rarity doing the costumes, so for her to pass it off to someone else, especially someone who didn't just win a prestigious fashion contest was in my view a total jerk move by Rarity. When you make an agreement with someone in exchange for your services, you don't give your responsibility to someone else.

Princess Twilight not getting a cab reminds me of this scene in a fanfic called Trixcord, where Discord (pre-season 3 reformation but managing to get out due to an incident involving an unsuspecting Trixie) is undisguised and in full view on a Manehatten street reading a newspaper about some chaos he's been causing and the newsstand guy only cares that Discord is reading a newspaper without having paid for it.

Back in season 1, i was not a fan of Rarity whatsoever. From this episode onwards she grew on me. This episode definitely showcased what a amazig character she is, and im sad it took me four seasons to realise it.

It's strange that Rarity so far has a pretty much flawless streak of episodes. I get the feeling the writers save their 'special treatment'. The only Rarity episode I would consider close to bad would be A Dog and Pony Show...and that wasn't necessarily terrible, rather just...confusing.
Anyway, yes, this episode definitely didn't disappoint for the long hiatus she had. And Coco Pommel....SO CUTE!! :3
City design looks so out of place. It doesn't feels that it's from mlp unvierse... Maybe if animators have used city designs from 18-19 century, that could fit much better.
The closer you get to the center of where discord was sealed the further back development is. As such twilight sparkle may not live as long as Celestia and Luna, though they may live forever since they were next to the initial blast.
By sealing away chaos itself with the elements of harmony this area will change much more slowly despite the proximity to bustling cities. Manehatten is thus the furthest city with the greatest advancement, while ponyville/canterlot/the everfree forest are very close to the past. It is likely that the forest is the oldest thing, since its flora and fauna seem particularly chaotic, and are likely whats left of discords initial reign.
Because chaos and change was sealed away the ponies had to fill in for nature by clearing the snow in winter, raising the sun and moon themselves, and basically keep the world running. The cutie marks may be part of discords power as well, acting as a break in the seal on their latent ability. Having multiple cutie marks has been shown to increase a ponies potential despite being inconvenient, rather than having no other purpose than visually representing their ability.

***** The city design of the MLP universe was the center of the discussion, I was explaining why certain cities use modern design while the central part of Equestria appears to be several centuries out of date. By my theory, Canterlot wasn't the center of the sealing of Discord but was close enough to only have advanced to the middle ages. The next big city besides Ponyville is Apple Loosa, which has advanced to a more western society but no further. So, depending on proximity to Discord and the moment he was sealed, you can expect the aging of things to slow down, hence why the city design for Manehatten, the furthest city from the blast zone, is also one of the most advanced cities both in design and in culture.
In short, if you look at a map of Equestria you will find that the cities closer to the present day are further away from Ponyville. The Crystal Empire is a major exception.
James Williston Discord chaos powers fainted from Equestria very long time ago, more than 1000 years ago. Having hundrends years to progress, learn about tehnologies and achivements from other cities is enough to become highly developed as their neighbors.

But you must realize that Equestria isn't simply unevolved, they entirely possess the capacity to construct such cities. The thing is that with their magic, they don't need all the technology for communication and such, so they primarily use what seems to be old-style villages. In a big population center, it makes perfect sense that they would build structures accordingly, raising high to allow higher numbers of people, buildings having sleek and contemporary looks as it is the fashion capital, etc.

A pretty good collab, nice to see you trying new things. I found Silver Quill's parts consistently good throughout. Film Sparks did alright though I think he needs to work on his speaking, sometimes it got choppy but overall I did enjoy what his New York perspective provided.

The building with the giant horse head is One World Trade Center. They just changed the design a bit as not to directly have the building in the show, but rather a nod to what is slowly becoming a landmark of NYC.

Rarity is my second favorite pony, next to Applejack :). And this episode is just as enjoyable as her other episodes.
MLP-Silver-Quill I know this "After the Fact" was done four months ago, but did you guys notice that FlutterShy is in TWO places at once? She's with the others when Rarity finds her friends but then she is somehow coming through the same door that Suri came through when she [being Suri] tells Rarity that Prim was pissed. Look at 7:28 and then at 7:38 .... Just thought I'd throw that out there.

I'd like to point something out about this episode that I don't think anyone else has mentioned....
Rarity thanks Coco for her honesty by offering her the job of making all the costumes for future performances of 'Hinny of the Hills'. Normally this would be quite a boon except for one thing: she won't be getting paid because Rarity had already accepted that job in exchange for a private performance of the show for her friends.
Very good point, I didn't think of that. But I think that it is still quite a boon. At least from many of my artist friends (granted they are mainly in the performance field) mention that there are many other considerations besides the money. Sometimes, the experience and prestige of the opportunity is a career booster by itself (and outweighs any monetary gain)...such as if you get an unpaid internship with an orchestra. Sometimes being an intern can even lead to a paid job position. Either way, in coco's case, I see that having "costuming for a major stage production" is being a huge boost in credibility in the public eye, and helps to really test and refine her practical fashion skills...plus having the personal backing of a generally acknowledged fashion designer (Rarity) will do wonders by itself.

But also I want to say that altho it's implied she's doing it for free, that doesn't necessarily mean that she's not getting paid.

Two things ended up cropping up in my mind, though not entirely related to the show. I'm surprised by the lack of alicorn oc's, really. I think I've only ever seen one, but I quite liked it. Second, is it just me, or does Coco sound like Labrys from Persona 4 Arena?

I'm glad Rarity did end up winning. While it did make the ending look too good as you said, it otherwise would've made Suri win the contest, in which case, it would promote backstabbing since she would've done it, win the contest, and go on to success.
And btw: That final line was bloody hilarious. XD
I'm sensing that rainbow thread and the shine off her eyes is there "moment of realization" to obtain there item to...possibly open that box we saw..so far two characters have showed there true realization and peaking moments and gotten items that give that rainbow shine in there eyes and more over an item to show it at the end. This is possibly an overarching thing for the season...
That's happened to me tons of times. I'm nice to others and people take advantage of it. Hell, once I was nice enough to lend my phone over to a "friend" to use over winter break... she ended up keeping it for TWO WHOLE MONTHS!!! Even after winter break was over!

That last part at the end was funny but true in some cases. Truth be told, I don't hate alicorns! I have an alicorn oc myself. Fans just have to take effort to prevent mary sues/gary stus...
I just assume that anytime an alicorn appears in the background, it's either an animation error or the animators being like "Hey. Let's throw in an alicorn in and see how the fans will react. It'll be hilarious."
Another fact: there ARE lines that form just to get a taxi in NYC. Usually in front of a hotel, or Madison Square Garden, the latter of which can get very competitive and fights do sometimes occur.

6:38 my favorite kind of villian is the "hidden in plain sight" ones. Or simply twist villains. Because they are a pain to pull of correctly. Its why my favorite mlp villian is cozy glow.
I wouldn't mind seeing that assistant again, even if only as a background pony. It works for continuity, and I can't help but see her as a Hinata-type character, with some potential.
Also, Alicorn OCs? Not a bad idea, but ONLY if handled well. Suffice to say, becoming an alicorn is far from easy. Just being one can't be any better, if Celestia's and Luna's conflicts are any indication. Alicorns are seen as a pretty high station in Equestrian life, with plenty of responsibility tacked on. Persian Poetess did an analysis on Alicorns (specifically male ones) and I think she nailed the topic perfectly.
Oh and btw with the Alicorn they actually do that a lot,they sneak an alicorn into the background which does prove that the flood gates opened a long time ago, I have spotted like 3 in season 2.
