Well, her father is British I know that! He's the singer, Phil Collins. So I guess she really knew the accent well growing up.

He was distant from his family, to the point that he literally crossed an ocean to get away from them. The relationship, even without the cheating, was corrosive to his sense of self. And all of this was to fill in the hole that was left when he felt his best friend, and love of his life, rejected him when he was 18 years old.
But as for "was he beaten at home" the answer is, not really. He probably got the occasional spanking as a kid, but it was more the constant push of him not "being good enough" that wore down his soul. He said multiple times that the thing he wished for more than anything, and he would be willing to trade all the wealth and privilege that being in his family brought him, was to have a dad like Rosie's. Really, he hung out with Rosie partially to get access to her dad, because being with him was like a baby tree getting sunlight after growing up in the near eternal shade of a towering tree above them. He needed that light, that warmth, that guidance to grow, instead of being strangled and shaded. Further evidence for this is his need to go to America for his schooling and stay there for his practice, he needed to get out of that suffocating presence.
Rosie's father may have been a working class man, but he was eternally supportive. He was the tree in the forest that shelters the baby tree and lets it grow strong next to it. Rosie is absolutely right here and Alex knows it. He's become completely materialistic and doesn't want to see it. Rosie came over expecting for them to go out to do "normal" things - go to the cinema, maybe do a bit of shopping, or just have a movie marathon. But instead her best friend spends the entire time at a poncy art gallery with people she doesn't know, being forced to meet with people she doesn't care about. And Alex hates it because she hates it and, as happens in every argument with a close friend, when they argue he says things he doesn't mean that crosses a line and makes her hate him more.
There are is no friendship between a man and an woman...he liked her and she always knew it but she didnt like him that much so she banged some other guy and got pregnant from him but still wants her "friend" as emotional tampon and for extra attention..thats the reality of it....So.....i dont think she can have any claim on him or his behaviour.....

I believe she grew up in the uk, well, she was born in Surrey and she was 7 when she moved to LA after her parents divorced.
tbh she did say she only started speaking in an american accent bc she got bullied for her english accent in school, a self-preservation thing, she probably finds it pretty easy to switch back to an english accent when needed

Dude i cried a lot in this film to the point i was hyperventilating lol. I recommend to read the book too. Bought two copies, the movie tie in and "Where Rainbows End" Version. Idk why I had to buy both (prob the original cover was too cute) but I loved each read.
I had a crush on a best friend when I first watched this that's why i was probably bawling my eyes out. Unfortunately this didn't make it easier to get over him though. 😅
