This is what I point to whenever I criticize Gainax. Yeah, Hideaki Anno had a lot of awesome creative vision, but Evangelion and other Gainax shows ended up feeling completely unfinished... because they were. They never quite figured out what they wanted Evangelion to be. I honestly believe that production issues are the reason why Evangelion isn’t a masterpiece, when it definitely could have been.
Fat gods exactly, the biblical symbolism that they implemented in the show further emphasises how much they never intended on fully realising what they were writing when the show was full of it and they had no idea wat they meant at all and infact added them in because they thought they looked “cool”

I started watching anime in 2020, I watched this video in 2019 and every so often I come back to watch this video to see how my perspective has changed but no matter how many times I watch this, I agree with everything in this video more than when I hated anime. Still one of the best videos on the anime community ever made
I liked Fairy Tail when I was younger. It was the third anime I ever watched (After Vampire Knight [good lord ik "trash" to most], and Inuyasha) and it was my favourite for a long time, purely because I liked the world and characters. It was only when I got a lot older I realised the plot is... the same thing over and over. 1. Someone threatens the guild or a guild member. 2. Someone (usually Natsu) gets pissed and fights back. 3. They get their shit rocked 4. They come back with the power of friendship 5. Win. 6. Maybe a one-off episode before the next arc. I noticed this with so many anime under my belt, but I still like it. I can admit it's not great but I would still recommend it because I watch anime for two reasons, and sometimes exclusive to each other. To have a good time, and to see some awesome shit. Ft fits at least one of those, so meh, if someone doesn't like it has nothing to do with me, but my natural curiosity would like me to know why. This same mentality I have applies to every anime. There was something shown as an example of a bad anime (I can't remember what it was and it was a few seconds so I'm not gonna comb to video to find it) and the only thought that went through my head was "Aww... I liked it." but I know I'm easy to please, and respect people's opinions even if I'm confused by them. Someone hating my liked animes is not going to stop me from liking it, same with liking something I hate isn't going to magically make me like it. Humans were designed to have different opinions so we're actually interesting and not copies of each other, and the world will be much better when everyone figures out the simple truth. It's okay to have a different opinion. And you shouldn't try to destroy something someone enjoys only because you don't enjoy it.

I feel like the biggest problem when it comes to talking about anime, or just any media in general, is alot of people don’t understand the difference between enjoying something and it being good. If somebody says they hate an objectively great show like Mob Psycho or Beastars, then that’s completely fine. Everyone has their own tastes and it’s fun to discuss opinions. However, if you say that Mob Psycho or Beastars is _”bad”_ then that’s when the problems arise. I enjoy Soul Eater even though I understand the flaws. I also hate Gundam but that doesn’t mean I think it’s bad, it’s just not for me. This difference is something that alot of people don’t understand, which isn’t bad, but the worst thing is that they see themself as a critic who has a good understanding, which they don’t.
Let's be honest here, beastars has characters furries love. There's already tons of furry porn of the characters. Characters need to be relatable. Humanoid animal characters aren't very relatable hence why most animes that go on radar will have humans. Doesn't matter how good it is if the characters aren't physically relatable to majority of the populace.
I think quality of an anime really depends on the intended purpose like if the show aims to be deep and emotional or aims to simply entertain and be a spectacle or to be thought provoking. I think in order to decide quality it must be decided how well the show accomplishes it's goal

That's why it's so unrepresentative to rate a show with a number system, like on MAL. It can be sometimes really hard to balance objective quality and personal enjoyment. Some shows I watched I know are quality pieces of anime, yet I didn't enjoy that much, and vice-versa.

Scamboli: "no math is just boring" Me: "and I took that personally" tl;dr of my paragraph is the comparison to math is bad because 1. while it's sometimes not true that people don't like math because they understand it and find it boring a large majority of people will admit that they don't like math because it's too difficult, 2. equating calculus to all of math is like equating a children's animated show you can find to all of anime, and 3. people who love math don't love it for it's complexity. In all seriousness though, I can't fault you if you don't like math because it's boring, but I think the comparison doesn't work at all. The easy first reason is because not a single person who loves math and might say this thinks calculus is enjoyable, it's just a necessary to get to the stuff that we enjoy, that's why all the calc 1 professors in college are so universally uncaring about the students in that class because almost all of them have other classes they are teaching that they like teaching far more and the students are either not going to struggle and move on to the more enjoyable classes or it's their last math class and they won't ever have to do it again. The second reason is because I think anime is far easier to understand than math because it is far more rooted in reality than math. Anime evokes emotions and builds characters that feel realistic and relatable to pretty much every person in the world and this causes you to even want to improve yourself because of that anime or character, where as in math I'm sure 99.99% of people have thought to themselves at one point "when am I going to use math in real life?" Quite frequently people who struggle with math dislike it and don't see a reason to bother learning it to improve their futures and as such never seek to become better at it and continue to dislike it for that reason. I fully agree that complexity doesn't equal quality, what I love about math is how satisfyingly every little detail fits together to make it fantastic and enjoyable like when there's a reveal in an anime that just makes so much sense and you had all the clues to put it together by yourself but never did, and then when that reveal happens it blows your mind and you fall deeper in love with.
You make some cool videos dude, your predicaments and thoughts about how people rate an anime are on point, I wish that there are more people with that kind of reasoning and well established thinking like you in the world.

This is what I point to whenever I criticize Gainax. Yeah, Hideaki Anno had a lot of awesome creative vision, but Evangelion and other Gainax shows ended up feeling completely unfinished... because they were. They never quite figured out what they wanted Evangelion to be. I honestly believe that production issues are the reason why Evangelion isn’t a masterpiece, when it definitely could have been.

I started watching anime in 2020, I watched this video in 2019 and every so often I come back to watch this video to see how my perspective has changed but no matter how many times I watch this, I agree with everything in this video more than when I hated anime. Still one of the best videos on the anime community ever made
I liked Fairy Tail when I was younger. It was the third anime I ever watched (After Vampire Knight [good lord ik "trash" to most], and Inuyasha) and it was my favourite for a long time, purely because I liked the world and characters. It was only when I got a lot older I realised the plot is... the same thing over and over. 1. Someone threatens the guild or a guild member. 2. Someone (usually Natsu) gets pissed and fights back. 3. They get their shit rocked 4. They come back with the power of friendship 5. Win. 6. Maybe a one-off episode before the next arc. I noticed this with so many anime under my belt, but I still like it. I can admit it's not great but I would still recommend it because I watch anime for two reasons, and sometimes exclusive to each other. To have a good time, and to see some awesome shit. Ft fits at least one of those, so meh, if someone doesn't like it has nothing to do with me, but my natural curiosity would like me to know why.
This same mentality I have applies to every anime. There was something shown as an example of a bad anime (I can't remember what it was and it was a few seconds so I'm not gonna comb to video to find it) and the only thought that went through my head was "Aww... I liked it." but I know I'm easy to please, and respect people's opinions even if I'm confused by them. Someone hating my liked animes is not going to stop me from liking it, same with liking something I hate isn't going to magically make me like it. Humans were designed to have different opinions so we're actually interesting and not copies of each other, and the world will be much better when everyone figures out the simple truth. It's okay to have a different opinion. And you shouldn't try to destroy something someone enjoys only because you don't enjoy it.

I feel like the biggest problem when it comes to talking about anime, or just any media in general, is alot of people don’t understand the difference between enjoying something and it being good.
If somebody says they hate an objectively great show like Mob Psycho or Beastars, then that’s completely fine. Everyone has their own tastes and it’s fun to discuss opinions. However, if you say that Mob Psycho or Beastars is _”bad”_ then that’s when the problems arise. I enjoy Soul Eater even though I understand the flaws. I also hate Gundam but that doesn’t mean I think it’s bad, it’s just not for me.
This difference is something that alot of people don’t understand, which isn’t bad, but the worst thing is that they see themself as a critic who has a good understanding, which they don’t.
Let's be honest here, beastars has characters furries love. There's already tons of furry porn of the characters. Characters need to be relatable. Humanoid animal characters aren't very relatable hence why most animes that go on radar will have humans. Doesn't matter how good it is if the characters aren't physically relatable to majority of the populace.

I think quality of an anime really depends on the intended purpose like if the show aims to be deep and emotional or aims to simply entertain and be a spectacle or to be thought provoking. I think in order to decide quality it must be decided how well the show accomplishes it's goal

That's why it's so unrepresentative to rate a show with a number system, like on MAL. It can be sometimes really hard to balance objective quality and personal enjoyment. Some shows I watched I know are quality pieces of anime, yet I didn't enjoy that much, and vice-versa.

tl;dr of my paragraph is the comparison to math is bad because 1. while it's sometimes not true that people don't like math because they understand it and find it boring a large majority of people will admit that they don't like math because it's too difficult, 2. equating calculus to all of math is like equating a children's animated show you can find to all of anime, and 3. people who love math don't love it for it's complexity.
In all seriousness though, I can't fault you if you don't like math because it's boring, but I think the comparison doesn't work at all. The easy first reason is because not a single person who loves math and might say this thinks calculus is enjoyable, it's just a necessary to get to the stuff that we enjoy, that's why all the calc 1 professors in college are so universally uncaring about the students in that class because almost all of them have other classes they are teaching that they like teaching far more and the students are either not going to struggle and move on to the more enjoyable classes or it's their last math class and they won't ever have to do it again. The second reason is because I think anime is far easier to understand than math because it is far more rooted in reality than math. Anime evokes emotions and builds characters that feel realistic and relatable to pretty much every person in the world and this causes you to even want to improve yourself because of that anime or character, where as in math I'm sure 99.99% of people have thought to themselves at one point "when am I going to use math in real life?" Quite frequently people who struggle with math dislike it and don't see a reason to bother learning it to improve their futures and as such never seek to become better at it and continue to dislike it for that reason. I fully agree that complexity doesn't equal quality, what I love about math is how satisfyingly every little detail fits together to make it fantastic and enjoyable like when there's a reveal in an anime that just makes so much sense and you had all the clues to put it together by yourself but never did, and then when that reveal happens it blows your mind and you fall deeper in love with.
