  • During a meeting of the Arkansas State Library Board on Friday, August 9, 2024, board members Jason Rapert and Shari Bales argued over the relevance of reading excerpts from "All Boys Aren't Blue," by George M. Johnson, and "Gender Queer," by Maia Kobabe. Rapert, a former Arkansas state senator appointed to the board by Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, contended that other members were "fighting us from keeping pornographic material out in front of these kids." Bales countered that the board did not have the power to pull state funding from libraries that made the books available: "You are standing in the wrong room. You need to go back and run for office if you want this changed."
