    I live in Western NY and am considering one of these anyway. Never had a bed cover before, but this one seems like a good candidate with the snow we get. I would think that brushing the snow off and letting the sun do it's thing would probably work for me, unless anyone has a better idea. I'm not a fan of blocking the rear window like some of the fold-ups do. Thanks for letting us know about the colder weather problem.

    • @mikelemire1955
      @mikelemire1955 Před rokem +1

      Same thoughts here; it was very useful to see what the limitation was actually like. It should matter less if you can park your truck under cover too (garage or shelter so the frost doesn't get to it).
      Reading some of the other reviews and 1 thing is definite: it was not designed for extreme temperatures (very hot Texas, very cold North) but they do seem to be making improvements with subsequent versions... see the felt on the X4 versus the rubber on X4S. I am concerned about the plastic-like corners where it meets the tailgate though... in very cold, you'd think they might snap if you try to move or unstick them if they are frozen...
      Latest specs seem to indicate the warranty is 5yrs now compared to 3 yrs on the Bakflip MX4.
      Cheers!

    Thanks Brad, I just bought the Bak X4S yesterday and will install next week when it arrives. I live in Oregon and we get plenty of cold weather with snow and ice. I would assume that many of the retractable tonneau covers have the same issue, but as you said and others You Tubers would buy it again. Thanks for the video.

    I love this cover. Yes it sucks when the weather freezes but I can overlook that one flaw. I have had no problems in 100 + weather, maybe because I put ArmorAll protectant on it. Would recommend to any of my friends.

  • @WOV49
    @WOV49 Před rokem +4

    One additional design flaw is the plastic corner caps at the tailgate end of the cover. They are secured by a very weak plastic clip and break off constantly. I have had to replace mine several times in the 6 weeks of ownership. Bak has sent replacements, but this is not a good solution. They have acknowledged the problem and say a fix is “in the works.”

    Just bought this for my recently delivered 22' F-150.
    *Disclaimer* I've never owned a pickup truck before (so no experience with bed covers or anything), but this thing is great, so far. My dad has a retractable on his Sierra that was dealer installed, and I think he may be considering getting this instead. I love the low profile, security, and reliability. I'm in Houston, TX where it doesn't typically get too cold, even in winter, so I don't think I'll have many issues, if at all, with it freezing in place. I've also heard the manufacturer for this is fantastic.

    Love the design. Quality is not as good. Bought the first one with the truck. Lasted 2 yrs and delaminated. Vinyl on top shrinks in the summer heat. They replaced it but I’m already seeing dimples in the second one after just one summer. They recommend using 303 protectant which I do regularly. Will be surprised if it makes it through this summer here in SC. Would not buy another with out at least a 5 year warranty.

    Of course it would be hard to roll. He had a very thin layer of ice on it. He had to break the ice at all the joints and then had the broken ice keeping it from rolling tight. That condition would be difficult of any cover, and much worse on a soft roll up cover.

    There is more than one major flaw. These don’t hold up in one summer season in Texas at all. Vinyl will shrink and pull away looking horrible. I won’t ever by any of their products again. They did replace it, but after my 1 year warranty expires I’m stuck with a $1200 paperweight!

    In Texas I have been through 2 covers in 5 years the sun will bake the vinyl cover so it will shrink , crack up an pull in from the sides . Also the felt material underneath peeled off . Bak did one free replacement under warranty but then you're on your own. they offered my a 5% discount on a new cover. In short in hotter climates don't use this cover. You will get around 2 1/2 years per cover.

      That makes no sense. There's no kind of roll-up top that will roll when the joints freeze. In the south, just throw some water on it because it's not 32° outside anymore. And if it is 32 degrees, Guess what, you probably should have planned earlier knowing it was going to do that. It's not like we don't know here in the south. Good grief. The delamination problem is a bigger issue in the south and a deal killer.
