What I Say to Judges | Adoption and Foster Care

  • What I say to judges when attending adoption and foster care court is overall pretty simple, and, in the long run, effective.
    I say that what I say to judges for adoption or foster care court is effective because, it seems to elevate me in the eyes of the judge, it allows me to still work as part of the foster kid's team, and it is a way that I can check myself to see that my heart is still in the right place.
    Often with adoption and foster care, our hearts refuse to see any side of the coin other than ours. We want our adoption and foster care story to go our way! We know that we are the best place for these kids from hard places that have inhabited our foster homes. After all, they are "kids from hard places."
    The truth is that we need to be respectful in court and see it as a chance to show our willingness to work as part of the foster kid's team. With prayer, fear, and trembling, we open ourselves to the will of the court. What I say to judges honestly won't have a huge impact on their decision 99.999% of the time anyway.
    So then, why go to court if what I say to judges doesn't change their position on a foster care case? Court is a great way to learn information that you will not be told anywhere else! Also, it shows the team that you are "all in" when it comes to working with them through foster care and adoption, but also when it comes to working with kids from hard places through their trauma and often crazy foster care story.

    Really enjoying all your informative videos...it helps explain the behind the scenes stuff. Your videos keep pushing me closer and closer to making the call to start the foster care process...I may just start by doing respite care, but would always be open to taking a child for long term...there are so many in the area I live in that desperately need help, usually older kids preteen and teen are the ones that keep getting shoved aside and it shows as they get older that they didn't have anyone there in their lives. I close on my house this week finally, soon to be onto better things as I'll have much better concentration and time to start working towards everything I need to do to be a foster parent, and like you a single guy...should be fun.

    I hope you and your family are well. For my part, after a year complicated for my parents' health, I have had good news. I'm going to be a grandfather demi adoptive son.

    Three videos a week is a lot! Even one a week is a lot. Take care of yourself! Robert has the right plan - a nap!
    And, I have to say, thanks for explaining about "the GAL"! I was scratching my head, thinking, "Nick says court is a formal place, you should dress up and be respectful ... and then he keeps talking about some 'gal' ... isn't that a little too informal?"

      Ha! There I go telling foster parents to listen to some gal in court again. 😅

    On the topic of courts and judges... what are your thoughts on the recent ruling allowing refusal of groups to allow same sex couples foster children.

    • @letsgodad
      @letsgodad  Před 3 lety

      I did a video awhile back about how an agency assumed I was homosexual when I called to research them. They were incredibly rude and rejected me based on their assumptions. I've had years to process this and decided that I am so glad I wasn't misled into working with a group of people who would treat me with that kind of disrespect. Do I feel like it is OK for my brothers and sisters in faith to exclude people based on sexuality? No. Christ modeled radical inclusivity. Am I glad that their actions potentially limit the number of prejudiced people I have had to deal with in the foster care world? Yes. Yes I am. These are the reasons why I am somewhat torn on how to answer your question.

      @@letsgodad Thank you for the well though out and measured response. I believe love is love and hate and discrimination is not a family value.
