I've been poor and isolated my whole life. I have so many barriers to good health. The information available on the internet is really all anyone needs. I often thought I needed professional help for mental wellness or nutrition etc. etc. But it wasn't available to me so my partner and I figured it out. We learned. We are lucky enough that we have brains that can learn, but at the end of the day it's about personal responsibility. A person has to want to make the lifestyle changes. All professionals can give you is the information they have and recommendations, but it's up to the person to make those changes. I am always grateful for this podcast and pointing me in the right direction for greater wellness in all areas. I Grok this podcast.

This is the best interview/discussion I have experienced with Attia. Thanks. P.S. Life is a crap shoot. A friend said this long ago - an element of wisdom.

    Thank for this great episode.|
I am unemployed due to a traumatic brain injury and this has given me time to make changes in my life. I am now doing my early morning walks of about 1.5km and had also stopped buying processed food as my current budget is fairly limited. I had lost 7kg and am also not experiencing any difficulties with my walk like I did in the initial week. My goal is to lose a further 3kg.
As for my cognitive health, I am relearning a language that I had not used for used for 36 years and I am also taking up drumming.

I also experienced a lot of pain and shame last week.
I wanted to numb it first.
But then I decided to actively feel it. I kept telling myself to welcome the pain. And then I meditated😌💮, which I do far too rarely.
I learned that from you and I also learned from you that it's ok to be weird and sensitive and I don't have to be ashamed of it all the time

What spoke most to me was the recommendation to spend time with the older generations. I think it was being a caregiver for my elderly mother that opened my eyes to the changes that were happening in my own body (I am 60).
I wish I had slowed down and enjoyed life more, rather than pushing to get "everything" done. Running a business ran me into the ground, both physically and mentally. I'm now paying the price now, but I also recognize that it's NEVER TOO LATE to start new, healthy habits.

I think the blue zones also have less stressful lives and therefore the cortisol levels are probably way lower than here in the US. I also speculate that the meat eating in the research nowadays is soon going to turn to the importance of amino acids more than actual protein and amino acids are found in a plethora of vegetables tofu being a complete source.
To comment on the knowledge is free, yes but a lot of times people are just ignorant to that because they live in an area (food desert) with low resources and poor education.

Learning about how to live life in a healthy way has improved the quality of my life. While information is free on the internet, the greatest difficulty is applying discernment and knowing what information is valid and what is not. That is why I decided to study LM at graduate level.
    It is fascinating!

I always appreciate to hear the perspective of other people especially about spirituality. I am a Christian and I honestly don’t know how a person could walk around calmly everyday believing that they will eventually just cease to exist. That part was hard to hear as a person who believes in eternal life. It made me feel sad to hear him talk about life and death in that way. I do respect that everyone has their own experiences and has the freedom to believe however they choose. There were a lot of great takeaways from this episode. I do plan to read his book and find out more about how to better care for myself and to encourage my kids to take care of themselves as well. ❤

First came across Dr. Attia in a youtube video of his Ted talk where he discussed his reflection of thoughts about a diabetic patient until it hit home. Kudos for the change of heart!! And as Mayim was asking how not to stress out over having to/how to do this. And I agree, in one way, I wouldn't likely be in the shape I'm in if not being diabetic, but do have days of diabetic burnout (like going for 3 month follow up appt, after exercising 6 days a week (running/riding) and a1c goes up significantly (even while eating relatively the same things) and the nex t appt it goes down.. then back up. Also, there is so many moving parts/pathways and yes there is tons on information but that can be overwhelming due to amount and/or conflicting messaging and/or good today, not tomorrow. And even if you want to try things there may/may not be a way to test and/or accessible testing of all the different components and interactions!

As someone with a fair number of health issues, I'm glad opiates don't agree with me. I have to take anti-nausea meds to even keep it down if I have surgery, and I still feel bad the whole time I'm on it. Blessing in disguise? It doesn't always feel like a blessing, but I'm always glad to get off the stuff. Chocolate is my drug of choice. That one just gets you slower by making you fat.

Interestingly, Peter said, we needed to find calories that we wouldn't gorge and Mayim stated that we usually only try to better our lives when its almost too late. I am guilty of both but thankfully I've had good outcomes. I had cholesterol once at 575 a year ago and a knee that had a maci procedure which I wanted to last as long as possible to benefit from and began to take getting fit seriously. Instead of focusing weight loss, I focused on getting health. I took up swimming which was low impact and I used WW as a guide to calorie counting. Good habits were developed, such as not eating after 7:30pm, drinking water, and drinking oolong tea daily . As a result, my A1C is normal range, not sure about my cholesterol, but I swim 3 to 4 times a week for almost a year now. I went from 2XL to L/XL, size 42 waist to 34 waist, and have lost 23.3lbs over a year span. I quit looking for affirmations from people on my success or to social media on how quickly were losing weight. I just wanted to be healthy and I found a golden ticket that worked for me and I so grateful! I hopefully look forward to a healthy, mobile, and long life.

13:43 Second point. Is 100% absolutely correct. This is the cause of the current crisis we’re in. Work insurances are forcing people back to work way to early, still injured and not functioning at normal capacity causing further injuries… and/Or theyre dragging out claims hoping the worker becomes so financially desperate they return to work without any care or treatment at all. There are those who can sacrifice the very last of their health to pay rent. Not ok! m And then their are those who can not return to work period and those injured workers are forced into homelessness over their health. all for the “benefit of the fund”, and sacrificed for “the greater good of society”.... But we crossed that “greater good line” a very, very long time ago and now every injuried worker who get denied is no longer for the “greater good” nor is it protecting the fund. It’s for the very worst and the “fund” is about to collapse. Either that or society is going to explode. and soon. This seriously need to be addressed sooner rather than later.

When it comes to nutrition, a heathy diet or more preferably put healthy lifestyle, that works for one person might not work for someone else because of food sensitivity. For instance my sister has MS and IBS and there are some fruits and vegetables she can't have. She also is gluten intolerance. Also on the side of exercise/being active, I have found that it is much more effective if you choose to do something you enjoy. I am overweight and I have lost more weight and had overall more energy by either walking in nature of playing racquetball than working out at a gym.

That's why I include my DTCM when it comes to my health. I spend an hour with my 'Alt Medicine' practicianers, yet my 10 minute 15 max talk with my doctor is an expert on my health? I'm healthy because I consult both sides and turn a deaf ear to naysayers once I make my decision. The medical model rarely look at body types and tolerances each person has. We are ultimately responsible for our well-being.

I’m on methadone due to a severe addiction to opiates. I feel like I’ve built my life back up around me but now I feel like I’m in handcuffs. I would do anything to find a doctor who could hear my whole story and stick with me. Finding a long term physician is so important for a person like me and I found one who did work with me and they diagnosed me with ADHD saying that it was most likely the reason I self medicated, but then he had a better opportunity and left. I could never fault someone for making a good decision for themselves, but now I’m hunting for another MD and what will they say? I hate that it’s up to me to find this person and the thought of making myself vulnerable again with my story sounds so unappealing.

I agree that information is very easy to acquire, but let's not ignore the fact that businesses invest enormous effort in advertising that often lies to consumers about the benefits (or lack of harm) of certain products or lifestyle behaviours.

I've been lucky to have providers as an adult that take ample time and listen, who do talk about wellness. But the insurance piece is a problem. I have gut issues, and my GI doc asked me to try a certain diet, which doesn't fit with my symptoms. My PCP explained a few things that were also concerning, and recommended a nutritionist. Going into retirement, it's outside of our budget and not covered by insurance. Why? Why would nutrition not be covered by medical insurance?

I think Peter is right...we get hijacked every time we eat engineered food (e.g., french fries) and that tends to produce this spiral effect of eating unhealthy. Where when I eat the baked potato, I don't get that same spiral effect. Instead I just feel satisfied, which is what food is supposed to do support our health and satisfy a biological need.
