How Many Dread Extensions Do You Need? + the Different Sizes

I get this question all the time, so I hope this helps at least a few of you! Also, I’d like to disclaimer that I do tend to estimate a little high just to be safe. I mention this in the video a few times, but I wanted to say it again. So the numbers I gave might be a little higher than what you'll see other people say!
ALSO you’ll hear me say “full” and “half” a lot in the video. You’ll see these terms a lot when you’re buying dreads, because it’s how makers sort what they’re selling. Either you see full sets, half sets, or accent sets. Sometimes the maker picks how many is in a full or half set, but sometimes they don’t so that’s why it’s helpful for you to figure out how many you personsally need/want.
If this seems confusing, don’t worry because once you install for the first time you’ll have a MUCH better idea of how many dreads you need (or want).
The Size Categories (remember these are estimates from my own research! They are ranges bc not every maker lists the exact same measurements for each size):
Micro:
1/8-3/16”
3-4mm
Most common size: ???
Full set is usually: 80-90 DE
Half set is usually: 50-60 DE
Thin:
1/4-3/8”
5-7mm
Most common size: 1/4”
Full set is usually: 60-70 DE (I've seen some full sets sold as 45-50 which tbh I don't get but whatever!)
Half set is usually: 40-50 DE
Medium:
5/16-1/2”
8-12mm
Most common size: 1/2”
Full set is usually: 40-50 DE
Half set is usually: 30-40 DE
Thick:
3/4-1”
15-25mm
Full set is usually: 30-40 DE
Half set is usually: 20-30 DE
Most common size: 3/4”
Extra Thick:
Anything above 1”
or 25mm
Full set is usually: 30 DE?
Half set is usually: 20 DE?
Most common size: ???
Micro and extra thick dreads are the least common, which is why the info I gave for them is the weirdest! I just couldn't find all that much data for those sizes, so I had to give my best guess.
As for SE dreads, I have 0 experience with them, but what I've seen is either people double the amount you would need for DE or add half as much. So, SE amounts are somewhere between 1.5 and 2 times the amount for DE.

The numbers I gave might be a little higher than what you'll see other people say! I gave estimates on the higher end of the average because it's better to have some leftover than to run out while you're installing. Don't forget to check the description for all the measurements, avg set amounts, and where I got the dreads I showed!

Fricken love you, my inspiration for DE dreads! I figured how many I would need by sectioning my hair into small squares and tying them I have a mix between medium and thick and my hair is thin so about 40 actually worked fine for me, thanks for the info!

I’ve got thin hair and I like thin dreads and I can get away with 50. Luckily I guessed right the first time! Lol. Thanks for being such an inspiration for me to just be myself and do what I want!
If you have single ended dreds you can also attach onto the installed dreds temporarily which bulks it up a bit. Just slip the end through the hoop and pull.

Thank you so much to share your knowledge, it's helping me a lot since it's been only a week from the first time I had my Dreadlocks installed. I made them out of wool (Navy Blue and Silver Light Blue, a good match for my Blue hair I'd say.) but I installed too less them, also I am not really feeling comfortable wearing it: it stinks when washed, they tend to get large and they loose LOADS of fluff! So I was considering to get some synthetics if they are not too expensive. Thank you for the infos!
In case you guys are wondering I have a thicker Mohawk so only my sides are shaved and I recently got a few dreadlock sets. I started my journey on this video and for my hair I estimated I needed 30 to 35 max from this video. I found out for the most part I usually install between 35 -45 dreads every install. I like to have 4 in the front and 2 in the back and at the widest pont I can get 5 I have 8 sets of dreads made by 5 different makers and they all vary slightly in width but only one of those sets have a different install pattern. In saying all this I am never upset to get a few extra dreads to make sure I don’t have empty patches

Thanks for the info! I use mostly on top 4 rows of 5 sharpie thick wooldreads, hehe. Not a big poofy amount but I like it :) Don't have anything shaved though, just put my hair back sleek and hide it under the dreads!

I feel I would get micro or thin dreads as I like to randomly have braids and extra stuff in my hair. This is really helpful.

Okay, I have been subscribed for a grand time, and now is the time I want dreads but I really don't know where to start. Someone I talked with does $70 per 10 dreads but I love their style and i dont know if that's a good deal i dont have much money. All I have down is the hairstyle and the size and guesstimate of how many dreads I need. I don't know how to self instal and I havnt checked if any hair dressors do. But my main question is I only want seven or 12 dreads because I was reading about Samson in the history and the way I want my hair I wasn't planning on fully dreading I wanted to leave my bangs out which aren't bangs because I like my hair the way you have it and I didn't picture having the first three on the front of my forehead I wanted that to be loose hair that I can take twirl in my hand 💡 and the little sideburn that you have I've been wanting to do that with both of my sides so there's a lot of hair I want specifically left alone and then I have really thin hair so I realized having more would give me more volume but I want the connection of just having the simple things I want like a braid Viking braids that hold down so I don't have to shave the side of my head and then those into a lock or two 🤣 I guess I'm building my ideas while researching because it mostly I just knew I didn't want to shave the side of my head but I wanted to braid it back so it would stop bothering me and stay permanent to the side of my head shaving it would be so much easier but then again I have been here and shaving only makes it thinner

I dig the idea of dreads, but I've always been a little hesitant. I live in a fairly conservative Canadian city, but I do have an undercut, which I braid in a similar fashion to Ragnar from Vikings or simply comb over to the right. I might go for the thin or micro dreads, but am unsure how much they would limit my ability to braid my hair into a ponytail-like braid. I also have very thick hair that grows quite rapidly. Ideas?

I have decided thank you soo much i decided to get medium or sharpie sized locs because i dont want them soo thin they look like loose hair but not soo thick that they look dumb i like the average size because they are manageable and good lookin in my opinion.
I have a majority of my hair shaved (undercut) and with pencil thin dreads I ordered 30 and only used 17. Hope this helps someone

Just wanted to update in case anyone else sees this thread, I ordered 40 single ended and used all of them! I can get away with just using 34ish too I just like the volume of the full 40. (Pencil thin btw)

I have very thin hair so I got 70 pencil/sharpie type dreads. I have yarn as extra if I run out because I want a couple braids but I’m not sure if I’ll need them because my hair is really thin
I can give the thinnest dreadlocks when I do not have any shavings on my head. I want to give them but I do not know if it will look bad when I have it all over my head ❤❤

Is there something like 'too much' hair for dreads? Because I have a pretty thick ginger mane that goes to my butt and I have the feeling that it might be a little bit too much and too heavy for dreads in the end?
+Leah Chan Yes and no. No, because if you've seen my install tutorial, I cover the method for braiding that you'd use (blanket stitch) that is perfect for people with long hair! But yes, because if you wanted super short, skinny dreads, you might have too much bc your real hair might braid too far down the dreads even with the blanket stitch method. I hope that makes sense!

So I am planning to get synthetic dreads in a half head style (if I am correct that means that you have a mix of normal hair and dreadlocks). I have a full head of mid length hair and I want to get pencil sized, or maybe even micro dreads kind of underneath my normal hair. I want it to look like there is more normal hair than dreads and the dreads are almost like highlights set in a layer underneath the normal hair. How many should I get?

Hey! I just wanna ask. I tried to look for the artist you recommended before and they're not shipping worldwide. I am from the philippines and I wanted this DE Dreads so bad. Then, I found an artist. I was so close to just having an extension but I realized, I don't want it. Then, I found an artist. She makes kanekalon (I think) and wool. Which one is the best? Because I am planning to go to the beach and hopefully the colors won't fade.
