Preparing Succulent Soil at Home đŸŒ”

  • In India getting ready made succulent soil is very difficult. So, here I have an easy succlent potting mix recipe with sand, perlite, cocopeat and compost. It is not necessary that you have all these constituents, you can always tweak it according to your needs. Just remember that for a good succulent or cactus soil it is essential that it should be good in drainage.

Worth mentioning that Perlite is dangerous for our lungs. Best to wet it before using so small particles aren't breathed in. Enjoyed your presentation. Pleasant, informative, & straight to the point. I'll try this mix tomorrow.

Cocopeat should not be added in succulent potting mix madam as by d time it creates fungus & bacterial infections in d soil as it's an organic matter & over time break down resulting decrease in drainage of soil. Also it holds too much water for succulents which results root rott. Pls don't misguide to the people. It can be used for propagation purpose only. Instead anyone can use leaf compost, garden soil with neem khali or fungicide powder in PROPER RATIO.

    Hi, thanks for video some queries on the below;
    1. Being in India shld we not use garden soil at all in least qty.
    2. Shld we press the soil like we do for other plants as I saw u just pouring & planting the succulents without giving any pressure.
    3. Shld we water immediately after completing potting.
    Lastly when to water next.

You can use soil just filtered the fine Dust otherwise overtime the soil will get compact we want the succulent soil to be lose porous
you can add sand or perlite or pumice to further make the soil more porous

I was wondering why nurseries add minute thermocole balls in seed sowing mixture. This is a mystery. You have given an excellent advice about not using thermocole and replacing it with perlite. Your communication skill is very good. If perlite is unavailable then possibly river sand can be used in it's place. --- Reggie Radcliff.

If you mean the coco peat moss. You're going to start seeing it more and more because we use so much more coconut in food now but we're also running out of sphagnum peat moss. We're ruining where it grows or did grow and became what it is. We have destroyed most of the environment that it came from so we're leaving the areas that it's left alone so that the world isn't completely scorched but we have tons and tons of this coconut fiber. And it actually works very well it's sold in the US 4 animal substrate and for gardening substrate. I think you're just in an isolated area right now so you'll start seeing it soon enough it was really expensive at the beginning here but it's getting a little bit better but then again Pete Moss is a fortune now also

I was considering using pavers sand(quite coarse) which I can also get in bulk plus perlite plus the standard potting mix I already get at a 1:1:1 ratio. I'd really appreciate your thoughts on this please?

whenever you handle perlite it should be wet. The reason behing is that it is a glass like crystal that has been puffed like a popcorn and the dust in perlite contain the same sharp glass particle so it can damage ur lungs or eyes if it goes in. adding water before handdling it can fix that.

I am wondering if I should I remove the earthworm and transfer it to another pot before planting another succulent in it? I basically just want to ensure that it doesn't eat up the roots or the stem of the plant. Also instead of old manure can sea weed fertilizer be added to the mixture? Does it do the same job?

It has high absorption capacity which leads to growth of bacteria in soil. Succulent needs dry and cold environment. While cocopeat will keep soil moist for long time. I am sure succulents will not survive more than 6 months in this potting mix. Instead use 80%cinder 10% leaf mould 10%neem cake and fungicide

I am totally with you regarding the polystyrene balls in soil. Those are a major irritation to the avid gardener. I'd just like to add that actually it is very easy to separate the balls from the soil, unless they have been in it for too long. If you have a plant you purchased from the nursery that has these in its soil, all you have to do is separate the plant and its roots from the soil to the best possible extent. Now dip and gently shake the roots in a bucket of water. Once that is done, you should put all of the soil into a bucket of water. The balls will float on the surface and can be removed easily.
Nursery guys, please don't put plastic into the soil.

Amount of water and how many times in a week should be poured for propogation of succulents.
Even a very little quantity of water spoils the leaves or, the stems which plugged/ cut for propogation.
    This is very important question.
