At least 15 soldiers and five civilians were killed and another 20 soldiers were missing after massive landslides hit two villages in Rasuwa district, about 90 kilometers northwest of the capital Kathmandu Friday night, newspaper reports said Saturday.
Government officials confirmed that the bodies of 15 soldiers and one civilian had been recovered by Saturday afternoon.
According to them, the worst incident occurred at Ramche in the Rasuwa district when a massive landslide struck an army barracks sweeping away most of the 64 soldiers posted there.
Bodies of 15 soldiers were recovered while more than 20 others, including barrack commandant Major Mahendra Mahat, were missing.
A journalist working for the weekly Trishuli Saptahik, Sharan Utshuk, said over the phone that another five people, all of them from the same family, were swept away at Dhaikun village, close to Ramche.
He said that at least seven houses in Ramche were destroyed by the landslide but the people were evacuated to a safer area before the landslide struck.
