What was the condition of the roads from Islamabad to kalam

Overall okay but you will find unpaved and bumpy patches. For SUVs its okay, but for cars you need to be careful for protecting front bumper, shockers and under body. However, do not take ur car/ suv beyond Kalam when visiting Mahodand and Saifullah Lake. They have flat rate of Rs. 13000 till Mahodand lake. If you pay a little extra you can go uptill lake Saifullah. Saifullah is better, no rush, neat and clean. Hope this helps.

Pls do get Parado 2002 and above. It has nice drive, all 4 shock absorbers instead of kamanees (leafs) at rear wheels.
