I was actually typed by David Zyla himself and he gave me Benjamin Moore 2007-40 and 2007-50, which are coo[ish] pinks. 2007-50 is virtually identical to your blazer. I really, really like the Zyla system of relying on your very own colors of eyes, lips, and hair as the basis of your wardrobe, and find it much more useful than any of the prefilled color palettes.🖌

I'm a Bright Winter with a limited palette and my 3 signature colours are cobalt, scarlet, and magenta. Because I'm not the girliest "girly girl" I naturally had stronger positive associations with the bright blue and red and gravitated towards them more, but as I've settled into my colour identity I've realized that my bright rose/magenta colour is truly the most flattering shade of all on me. It's my best lip and cheek colour by far and I've started to embrace it more in my outfits too. It doesn't hurt that Barbiecore has been so normalized! I'm also old enough to wear what I truly love and not worry about the potential judgments of others as much. I still love red of course, especially around the holidays, but pink is winning more and more of my heart.

I read this book cover-to-cover, and it led me to exactly one useful conclusion: if a color appears anywhere on your body, including a speck in your eyes, skin, or hair, it's worth considering. So it’s a useful approach to find your shade of red/pink, but it won’t work for everyone, and some people will have multiple shades that work.
Beyond that, the book is absolute garbage. (Oh, and I'm white with blue eyes and light brown hair. I can't imagine what would be going through a dark-skinned woman's head while reading this book!)

Yeah, the impression that I got about the Zyla system when Ellie first discussed it (in a vid some months ago) - that it's primarily for white people. For POC esp those who have darker skin, the colors would be 50 shades of grey and brown.

A bright, light, cool toned red. Not good with names of colors lol. I like this theory and your others regarding color, but I honestly hate the color season theory, it seems flawed, I find it frustratingly narrow and hard to see myself in. On a side note, the top you showed does look tomato red on my screen, as you warned, and your fave raspberry lipstick looks browny-orange. You've prompted me to learn how to change the colour profile on my computer. No wonder I have never been able to make any sense of photos shown up by many online colour stylists as prime examples or "warm" or "cool"!
edit: did my best on my iMac to "shift the white point into the cool zone" but your lipstick still doesn't look cool in value. I guess I'm stuck with a warm value display. Lately, I've wanted to keep my hair more natural (thought the tips are still a bit pink), but I like to say that pink is my "happy color." Warm browns, tan, and ivory are my neutrals. Otherwise, most of my wardrobe is in shades of green. Bright saturated spring greens, army greens, forest and sage. I feel comfortable and confident in green, but a nice orangey petal pink is my soft inside self.

great question. clothes, makeup, and accessories are just objects that don't have genders like people do. therefore anyone can put anything on their body, though depending on where you live, people might discriminate against you, assault you, or even arrest you for what you wear. most style systems are based on geometry and color theory, which apply to everyone. zyla's system is based on the undertones of skin and hair, which all people have, so yes it would apply to men.

Quick question-have you gone to physio? I just notice that your right hip (my left) comes up a bit. Mine did that because it was out of place. It can be a genetic thing when the hip falls forward and the muscles around it aren’t strong enough. And I just know it can make your knees, ankles, and/or back sore or tight, and make one of your legs a slightly different length. A physiotherapist put mine back into place and my hip felt way looser and I grew by like half an inch.

My guesses are that looking at what kind of pink/red lipstick shades suit you best could point you in the right direction? And pinching your fingertips like she mentioned might still work since the palms of the hands are lighter in colour than the rest of the skin?
Also from what I understood Zyla’s theory isn’t just about exact colour matches but also what harmonises and brings out certain features, or finding a match more in the way someone might put together a tonal outfit. Some of the colours aren’t colours I’ve seen on any person so that’s why I understood it like that but I could be completely wrong about all of this

I have this blouse that I can't part with for the life of me. Why? Because it's EXACT my romantic color. I do the finger pinch test and it basically blends right in. I found those blouse by accident as a young teen and now I'm in my 30s. Since finding Ellie, I've been using it as a template for my wardrobe.

My romantic color(s) is all pinks. And I hate pink so much 😒
I am pretty clearly a soft summer though so maybe there are some other ideas I can play with. I just can’t fathom the idea of wearing a big pink thing. Pink shoes are the max I’ll go.

I feel absolutely no relation to any of the colors referenced, unfortunately. My pinched skin and my bitten lips appear warm, but none of the warm colors shown match even remotely close. Hm, maybe the coral pink, but the pinched skin looks more like indian red (the lighter version) and my bitten lips look more like the slightly darker and brighter version of indian red. Both are somewhat close to coral, but slightly different. I know my lips can turn very bright in color naturally, so much that some people ask me what lipstick I wear. (My mom even told me once my lipstick was a bit bright for her liking when I wore nothing on my lips at all.) It depends on the wheather a lot. If I would try to find a lipstick in that color, it would be rather tricky. It's almost like a bright medium pink and a bright medium orange had a baby... with a little more pink than orange, but still warm, visually leaning red if that makes sense... I once bought fabric in a color called "carmine pink" and that fabric looked a lot like my lips when they are at their brightest. But when I google that color it looks way different than the fabric color does. I usually wear coral red lipstick and dab it into my lips with my fingers to melt the color into my lips. It does look like it enhances my lip color rather than overpowering it. I know that raspberry is too cool and a bit too soft for me, but the value of the color is nice for me. I wanted to try tomato red lipstick, but couldn't find one in the drugstore (in Germany) yet... reds can work for me if the undertone, value and chroma is right, but atm you can find mostly cool toned reds and a lot of them are too muted and dark for me.

binge watched Ellie's videos on this, bought the book, read through it.
all clear BUT my energy color vs my first base... the darkest spots in my eyes are, well, pretty much black (rest isnsuper dark brown), and the ring around my iris is charcoal grey. which fits my closet: I have a lot in grey, and if I want to feel empowered I wear all black, and usually get told that I look amazing.
has anyone else had this? can black be my energy color while 'my version of black' is charcoal? do I maybe just get too hung up on the word black and should purely look at the functionality of the colours?

    • @elliejeanroyden
      @elliejeanroyden  Před 3 měsíci

This is absolutely right - your version of black doesn’t have any relation to the colour black at all, it simply means your dark neutral, and it makes sense that you could find a shade of black elsewhere in your true colours ♥️

What do you do when you’re very pale skinned put your skin is flushed all the time like I can’t even work out with her being red and blotchy would that mean any shade of red or pink would not look good on me?

I feel like I'm like this. I need to 100% wear makeup, at least concealer/color corrector or some foundation to cancel out the redness before wearing pinks or reds. I can't go around it or it just won't work.

But brown and orange are also my favorite colors.
