This was hugely helpful. I had several ruined shots from a recent shoot and I could not figure out what was going on. Everything looked good on the SmallHD 702 monitor, but when we saw the media on the computer, it was soft and had inaccurate colors. Now that I see the issue in these examples, it looks similar, so I'm hoping that's the problem. Really unfortunate. I have a lot of money invested in NDs, so I'm not thrilled with having buy even more just to deal with this.

A dedicated IR cut filter may likely do the trick and they're only like $100 for the screw in kind. That way you're good with your NDs and only need the one new filter.

@@Owlbot Thanks for the reply and good suggestion. I guess I'm confused about the fact that this is clearly an issue, yet Blackmagic provides no solution. Also, is there some way of knowing when IR pollution is a problem with a given shot? I ask this because I really don't like having any additional glass in front of my lenses. I used to have UV filters on all my lenses (primarily for protection), but I found over the years that all they do is collect dust and smudges WAY easier than the lens would otherwise. Similarly, I really don't want to add an IR cut filter unless I absolutely have to.

@@SmithDonovanMktg I couldn't tell you why there's no IR cut filter built in to BM's cameras (except for the Ursa Mini Pro which does have one) but essentially the way to "know" if a shot is good is to know that it's always a problem. Any amount of ND will highlight the IR issue, so assuming ANY infrared pollution is unacceptable to you, you'll just always want that IR cut filter. I've never been a UV filter dude so I get it.
As you can see here, at the lower strengths it's not INCREDIBLY noticeable, but it is there. Again I can't speak to BM's position on this, it's likely a cost-saving measure, but yeah: if you're using any strength of ND, you'll want that IR cut to be safe. Or just use IRNDs, if you haven't invested already.

Wow. I just found your email from August. Looks like we were working on a shipping quote and the thread got marked closed by accident in our ticket tracking system so no one followed up. Very sorry! We try to get back to everyone one that reaches out.

Rawlite IR/Anti-aliasing filter for the sensor is what you want to look at and possibly a lucAadaptor to make the camera full frame.

ND filters block visible light, not infrared or UV.

Does this only occur when an ND is used without an IR cut filter? Or will this happen irregardless if having an ND on or not?

Only when nd is used in very strong sunlight.

I'm interested to know what ND filters you used? I ran a Tiffen variable ND canon 24-105 f4 on my test footage and didn't notice IR pollution. By no means am I doubting you because it's clear that its there in your test for sure. But now you have me thinking I should do a real test since yall didn't notice at first as well lol.

    • @Owlbot
      @Owlbot Před 5 lety +1

For all I know Tiffen's VND has some IR cut in it haha. Our 4x5 NDs were:
      1.8 Schneider
      1.2 Tiffen ND
      1.2 Tiffen IRND
      0.9 Marumi WSND
      0.9 Tiffen Waterwhite ND
      0.9 Tiffen IRND
At least that's what I've written down in my notes

My tiffen Variable ND has a green shift to it so potentially that's countering the infra red push? Not sure it's ideal though haha but if it works.
