A lot of people are saying the same thing and I have to agree: the animations loop too quickly. This is really evident for me in the Starmie in the beginning, where the sudden jerking and spinning doesn’t look too clean to me.
A good way to do it is to maybe try and find a beat to them. So like, 1...2...3...[now]...1..., and so on. The animations might look better with breathing room is all

    • @beta4239
      @beta4239 Před 3 lety +262

Better comparison would be to do it somewhat like the Black and White animations. Have the custom animation happen every few seconds with a more idle stance in between. Like Lillipup, who does a sort of hophop idle.

They were the most lively for sure, but not all had more personality. Some were literally just swaying back and forth. The problem I feel with these animations is that they're constant. Maybe it's just been made to loop immediately for the sake of demonstation, and if it is disregard this, but the ones like Politoed and Maractus need pauses in between these animations. It just looks unnatural otherwise.
The same could kind of be applied to Hitmontop. The constant spinning just looks strange, in my opinion, but spinning intersped with breaks (either on their feet or head, maybe even dizzily) would look much better.

No one is saying that though, like you understand no Pokémon fan is going to say it's the "worst game ever", the criticism is fair when it's directed at literally the highest grossing franchise ever, the only reason people are annoyed by it is because most fans complain a l o t, but that's because they are tired of saying the same thing on repeat and seeing gamefreak adopt the "screw it, they'll buy it anyway" mentality and capitalize off of how much they love the franchise instead of making games worth their price :/
Edit: OKAY I HAVE SEEN THE FANS Y'ALL WERE COMPLAINING ABOUT NEVERMIND TURNS OUT THEY DO EXIST- I was completely wrong, my bad for that, still think the criticism against Nintendo is entirely justified but these people are twats and I understand why others are wary of critiques when they exist

People happy with just getting the games, I always see wanting the team behind it to not be stressed. The people not happy, want them to take their time. I wonder what could happen with Pokémon games if we could actually push for them to take their time to make what they wanted, since they OBVIOUSLY are not lazy if they get out a game a year. Overworked, underpaid, and under-appreciated because all we see is their crunch work, really.

@@jvmeel7454 Well GameFreak are cut for time and have a restrictions on what they should be focusing on. The Pokemon weren't the only things worked on when GF made Sword and Shield, they probably had to make he places, people, cutscenes, etc.
I'm sure the Devs were told to focus on the more important work instead of just doing what they want to work on.
Though I don't really know a lot of Game Development I do know it's a ton of work based on how work they did to turn a Beta that literally looks like a placeholder to something that people considered a good enough Pokemon Game.

DistantKingdom did say that a lot of things were lost from the 2d to 3d transition.
The animated movement was probably one of them. I heard that Pixel Art was used to create the animated movements of Pokemon in the Gen 5 games but were removed when they went full 3d.
One if the things I think are a problem with 3d models is that people will want improvements in textures from all things, and with over 800 Pokemon to improve the shaders for like shadows and how depth is shown in certain Pokemon will make it harder.
Pixels make it easier to make depth by darkening certain areas to show that they are further or are protrusions.
Heck I didn't really see a Difference in the PS5 Spiderman from the PS4 Spiderman.
I did wish that they can at least make a small variety of Animations for many Pokemon again, though it's probably a Pipe Dream...

I agree so much with "posture matters", the reason I also like Toxtricity is how it looks at the opponent, kinda like it's looking down on them. Imagine Toxtricity without that posture, just standing still, looking directly at the opponent like Politoed. It would be so much more boring and lifeless. I would prefer some Pokémon to keep their cool posture (Sneasel and Salazzle also look cool) while the others to get proper animations to convey their personality better (I would prefer Politoed having an animation like Ludicolo but without the same hand movement, kinda just hops left and right while looking more battle-ready.)

    1. Starmie: Much better than the old, played stadium so much as a kid and to see it in its former glory within Sword Shield albeit modded is good for my soul
    2. Sudowoodo: I understand what you were trying to do and it does give it more life than the official one but i could take it or leave it
    3. Wingull: As much as I liked the sitting Wingull Animation this one is much better for battling, sitting Wingull is definitely something i'd like to see in the Camp tho
    4. Maractus: Maractus was one of those ones that didn't need to be changed imo but i am glad you did
    5. Politoed: Perfection; I never liked the Sitting animations of the older 3d games personally and even the croaking bit was awesome!
    6. Raboot: This is something i do wish was real, dynamic poses with the 3d games are pretty important cause some pokemon could actually benefit from having a good pose and no animation. i would like to see some of the other mons get this treatment in the future.
    7. Hitmontop: Actually not a fan of the constant spinning, actually i'm not a fan of Hitmontop being upside down in a 3d environment at all, i don't know how to explain why i feel this way but i do.
and those are my opinions. a Pokemon i would like to see get revived tho is Exeggutor since i remember the Stadium version doing a simple jig while being Idle

How does a hobbist make better animations in such a short time, than a bunch of professionals with a nintendo sized budget?
(Also, IMO the landing animation of Wingull was better, but this one is great as well)Edit: Guys, do not like my comment! I was wrong, he is not creating these animations, he's just applying other ones to the idle pose... which is still impressive, just far less...

It made me upset and seeing it move like in the Pokédex entry makes my heart melt.

B : I preffer hitmontop how it is today, and it looks kinda jarring seing it constantly spinning. I suggest it sometimes does a little upsidown spin, but is most of the time with its current animation. The reason this animation is good is because one of the main inspirations for hitmontop is Capoeira, and in Capoeira people usually do hitmontops movement when they arent attacking.

Having so much energy constantly is a bit distracting, but in combination I feel it works perfectly to keep the focus on the gameplay, but have that lovely flair that isn't as present in modern games.
