  • I made a stone handle for my dagger we are calling Serenity! This is one of the most exciting and nerve-wracking things I have done. I am afraid the handle could break at any second while I tile saw it. Figuring out how to get it polished was tricky, but the end result is priceless!

Geologist specialising in alkaline rocks (like charoite) here. The black is aegirine, the honey coloured mineral is tinaksite. A lot of these are more sensitive to acid than typical stones, so some type of sealant might be helpful if it doesnt ruin the polish, if the piece is expected to be handled a lot

Great job! As a stone worker, I will say you did AWESOME on your 1st go! Charoite is fairly easy to work on but it can go sideways sometimes right about when you’re almost finished! But you ‘handled’ it VERY well and the results look Fantastic!! Way to go! Agate is a little harder but there are some truly wonderful patterns and colors. And jade, well you are gonna Love working with jade! 💎

Using water on a stone/tile bit is not only for lubrication, it's also for cooling. Creating the pool might work but the water will warm up and your bit won't stay sharp very long. Best to have a setup or at a minimum a semi continuous spray/flow of cool water.

That Charoite is stunning, and the dendrite inclusions really give some character to it. When you start using stone for handle then you really get my interest going because I am a serious rock hound and can think of a thousand different stones that would be awesome as handle material you might also want to try giving Porcelain a try as well, but for that you'll have to learn pottery or have someone who IS a potter making your handles for you because pottery take a long time to master.

I like the moat idea. Slow and light fingertip pressure with water. I've put a piece of marble in a shallow pan and used a hole saw for tile. Perfect for the faucet set. The bugger in this is this is a very well made 20 minute video and you made it look easy. Time and patience are the biggest ingredient once the materials and tools are obtained. Much of which you can construct yourself if you collect electric motors to mount on a bench to make a buffer or grinder. Beautiful job.

Charoite, Lapis, Dioptase, granites(Titanium Cosmos, Juparana Bordeaux, etc), Pietersite would be good starts. With only small pieces (like Dioptase) of some available, "banding" pieces together or using bronze or titanium spacers between segments may be a way to go. Soft washers or gaskets somewhere? I have some beautiful steels (Spyderco Mule Team skeleton blades) that deserve such special handles. The smaller size needed may make it doable. I love the large piece of starting Charoite slab.
