  • Please enjoy this mini-recital of holiday music presented by George Shirley (Joseph Edgar Maddy Distinguished University
    Emeritus Professor of Voice) and Martin Katz (G. Koldofsky Distinguished University Professor;
    Earl V. Moore Collegiate Professor in Music;
    Artur Schnabel Collegiate Professor in Piano).
    In this presentation, George and Martin perform "Agnus Dei" by Georges Bizet, and spirituals "Sister Mary" by Roland Hayes and "Rise Up, Shepherd, and Follow" by Jester Hairston.
    George also shares the story of the first time he met Martin for a performance in 1965, as well as when he stepped in to perform the bass solo in "The Trumpet Shall Sound" from Handel's "Messiah" with Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra.
    Happy holidays!

    I was taught as a child to respect my elders. Now, at the age of 77, the number of my elders has diminished significantly. George Shirley remains one of them. He gives me hope that I might not only live until my late eighties, but be able to sing at a high level at that age as well. I cherish our shared membership in the American Academy of Teachers of Singing (AATS) and your inspiration to keep on singing. Thanks, George! Love and Peace, Robert Edwin.

    I remember during my last year of undergraduate studies at the University of Maryland, Mr Shirley stood by my side and was instrumental in helping me to graduate. This was only one of the many times that he stepped up to defend and support me. Not only was his guidance and instruction paramount in my young life as a musician, but he continues to be an inspiration to this day, helping me to keep the faith. I also met Mr Katz during those days as he was a judge, along with Todd Duncan, during my first voice competition, which Mr Shirley suggested that I enter. After I was fortunate enough to win that competition Mr Shirley’s words were, “ If you stay true to the music, you’ll always be a winner .”
    God bless you Mr. Shirley and God grant us peace on earth.

    I've been listening to George sing since 1957 when he joined the Wayne State University Men's Glee Club for a tour of Michigan. His great voice continues to thrill me. And a very happy holiday to you and Gladys. And thanks for all of the wonderful music.

    George Shirley has been one of my heroes since I was an Apprentice Artist at Santa Fe in 1964-65. He was not only a great artist, but an approachable member of the company. I have heard Martin Katz in performance and master classes many times and a great admirer of him as well.

    There are no words to describe the passion and commitment from BOTH of these performers. Thank you both Prof. Katz & Mr. Shirley! Happy Holidays to you and thank you for being the blessing that you are. Sending love and greetings from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Thank you for making me the musician & teacher I am today. With love - Jaunelle Celaire (class of 2003).

    I'm so glad to hear Mr. George Shirley singing still with abandon and artistry at the age of 89. I remember meeting him on the stage of Detroit's Orchestra Hall in 1977 or '78. That evening he sang Schubert's epic song "Auf dem Strom". This was a benefit concert to begin to fund the renovation of Orchestra Hall which has since come into it's renewed glory as the home of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Maestro Shirley has always been a hero of mine. I wore out my LP of his recording of Mozart's "Cosi Fan Tutte" on RCA that also featured Leontyne Price, Tatiana Troyanos, Judith Raskin, Ezio Flagello and Sherrill Milnes. A great artist and human being! Cent'anno, Signore! Una artista con "un'aura amorosa"! And as a collaborative pianist Martin Katz has no peer! Check out Mr. Shirley on the great jazz pianist Geri Allen's recording "timeless portraits and dreams'.
