Fly fishing for trout, fly fishing for Cutthroat in the Pacific Northwest has been a passion of mine for the last 40 years. I have spent most of my life fly fishing the great Pacific Northwest to include fly fishing in Alaska, fly fishing in Washington, fly fishing in Oregon, fly fishing in Idaho and fly fishing in Montana. I generally will fly fish and practice catch and release when fly fishing for trout, but I have been known to catch and cook during camping trips to many of my favorite fishing spots. I love to fly fish lakes in the higher elevation, though I have a few lowland lakes that are fly fishing only that are also on my most favorite list. I have a ton experience fly fishing rivers for trout and always enjoy discovering new rivers to fly fishing in and around the greater Pacific Northwest. I am also an accomplished at casting a fly rod - whether it is fly fishing casting for distance, fly fishing casting for accuracy, the double haul, roll cast, tower cast and many more fly fishing casting techniques - I can show you the basics when it comes to casting a fly rod. I also will cover many topics that relate to getting started with fly fishing. From your basic fly fishing setups, flies and fly boxes - we cover all the fly fishing needs for beginners. Thanks for taking the time to tune into FlyFishDan and I hope you consider subscribing to my fly fishing channel. Cheers and FISH-ON!!! - Sport
The excitement in your voice had me excited and I’m sitting at a damn desk.
Lol - love that :))

DIAPER CHANGE INCOMING
Love it!!!!! That first second you realize you are outgunned and going to have to use some skill to land that beast. Well done, Sir! What rig were you using ?
Well put! I was fortunate to get that guy in the net - strong fish!! I was using a large brown TJ Hooker stonefly nymph.
Can you catch fish using out of season flies? Or will the fish just pass them up?
Also beautiful fish.
@@stephenburdess2914 Generally speaking you will have better "luck" so to speak, if you use "in-season" flies. However, it also depends on the water temperature, time of day and color/ type of water you are fishing in.
@@randyherringshaw6325 ugh lol. So many variables with fly-fishing. Lol. I'll have to keep researching thanks for the quick reply.

Giant cut man! When you were talking about the 3x and 4x i was thinking about how badly i’d be screwed with 6x and 7x😂
I was definitely happy to have heavier tippet on this day for sure :))
Play it right, you'll land it. I use 5-6
I live in PA too, 6x is pretty standard!!
😳😅
I'm new to this sport. Can you explain why 6x and 7x would be bad?
Once caught a 16.5 lb. Hen Brown trout in the Cumberland river below Wolf Creek Dam in Kentucky on a spinning rod using 6 lb test line. She was release unharmed. I only kept the memory.
What a great memory that was!
That emotion, adrenaline and self satisfaction is why I love fishing. Plus the easy meals.
You got that right! Well said :))
Awesome! Was worried for about 3 seconds there in the net, but great job!
Thanks!! Me too - I was like OH NO!!! •whew•
Same! I thought that mf was about to make a great escape!
@@FlyFishDan Almost too slow with the net. Lift him out so he doesn't tail walk out of it when there's water still under him. Glad to see you got him up on the reel to play him. I've seen too many anglers try to strip the fish in with their hand on the fly line. Good job!
On the flip side every fisherman’s nightmare: Gets it to the net and line breaks right when you’re about to net him
That would be a nightmare!
Meh. If you're gonna release 'em, then close is close enough.
@@jacobmccandles1767 so leave the hook in their mouth…yeah ok
@@TeMeister well, no....and yes. Fish come off of hooks, but it's fishermen that break lines. But then a fish with a hook that will rust out is often betternoff than one that is played to exhaustion and handled.
You know all this though.
@@jacobmccandles1767 Tetnis?
I'm so please for you Brother, not because you caught a big fish but because you're happy and enjoying life! 👍
You got that right! Thanks for saying that - cheers!
Nice catch ! Beautiful fish ! Did you release it ?
👍 🇨🇦 ✌️
Yup! I let this big guy go to fight on another day. Here is the full vid: czcams.com/video/31IqIrxztLo/video.html
Man, I am always in awe watching people fish with fly rods. Amazing
Glad you enjoyed! Thanks for taking the time to watch. Cheers!
I have not been fly fishing for long, only one or two years, but videos like this is what got me to start.
Good stuff :))
Congrats , perfect land
Have to love the slow motion :)). Thank you!
You know when you say “ooosh” you have a lunker 🤣🤣🤣
Exactly :))
Strong fish strong current=great fight. What a cutbow trout! Keep up the great fishing
Thanks for watching - I do appreciate it!
@@FlyFishDan Of course, anything to brighten another fisherman’s day!
That’s normal sized trout where i live
Nice! Not too often you catch one like this in WA
Heaven?
@@marksmith161 close as it gets on earth :))
I love your excitement! Awesome catch you deserved it! 👍
Was that a trout? Biggest damn trout I have even seen.
Yup! He was a big westslope cutthroat trout. So good!
@@FlyFishDan i bet it makes an awesome smoked fish dip
What a beautiful river ❤
Freekin AWESOME. I've trout fished in East Tn my entire life.. It's one of the best fish imo. Congratulations on a nice catch and thanks for sharing
Awesome! Thank you!
A river beauty of a trout! Thick! Nice work!
Thanks 👍
Hope you honored him with a full pardon.
Oh I did! Here's proof: czcams.com/video/tbeSi6Ele5I/video.html
I would have honored him with a full skillet.
@@rubenllerena1767 that got me 🤣
How on earth is it to dream about this when i cannot even sleep thinking about the excitement?im totally going fishing tomorrow man 😄😄😄
how did it go?
Big fish
Strong fish
Really big fish
Look at that fish
Made my day that did 🤣🤣
Nice! Thanks Daniel for the great comments. Cheers!
@@FlyFishDan you are naturally funny and brightened up my day. Cheers!
Wow. That's a giant. A giant rainbow trout that is!!
Thank you! He was a big ol westslope cutthroat trout, thanks for watching!
Monster Cutty!
So good :))
That brought back good memories 🤗 thank you so much 🥰
Thanks Brian! My pleasure :))
That's a gorgeous cutthaot man. Good job
Thanks 👍
Madison River, Yellowstone Park in October. You can catch 30 a day of those and bigger. Two weighted prince nymphs 18-20” apart on #8 hooks, 7 weight rod.
That sounds good to me - I am ready to go to Montana!
I love this, the scenery is so beautiful, your rod, the net, and especially the fish. All so beautiful. Where is this?
Thank you Matthew! It's in Washington State - some amazing rivers and streams in the Cascades.
You deserve way more subs than you have, your content and waters are crystal clear, much luck to you
Thank you for your kind words, I do appreciate it! Help me spread the word! :-)
@@FlyFishDan will do man, been fishing since i was a kid and always go surf fishing but have never been fly fishing and your videos have made me interested, again best of luck man.
Other fly fisherman watching this right now.😮😮😮💀💀💀💀💀💀💀
From the looks of it, got real lucky! Hooked him in the eye!! Beautiful fish
Luck was definitely on my side - he was hooked in the side of the mouth. The eye would have been painful!
@@FlyFishDan congratulations man! So exciting catching a whopper!
Absolutely great feeling!
So good :))
I wish we had more cutthroat in my river, their far and few in between, mostly hybrids.
They are tough to find for sure. Thank you for taking the time to watch, I do appreciate it!
Overpopulated
That's massive for a cuttie!!
Nice job!
💛💚🌲💚💛
Thank you Rocky!
I had the honor to watch a 40 inch brown hooked and landed on a fly.
Been wanting to learn it ever since!
Wow...I can't even imagine something that big. Crazy!
@@FlyFishDanthe belly on it made me think of a big ol fat catfish
Love rainbow trout.. frying pan, salt and butter. 🧈 😋
That does sound good - I let this one go to fight another day :))
Pretty sure that’s a cut
@@christianmartinez3461 🎯
@@FlyFishDan YOU LET THAT GO??? I could never do that to a trout that size
I don't think i could keep a fattie like that one. I catch 10-30 a day at my local area but those are around 1 lb if that. I have to go to Pyramid lake where they are 8lb minimum and up to 30 lbs.
Amazing fish Dan
I watch your videos to take tips from so I can improve on my fly fishing
Thank you! I am super happy to hear that, glad to help in any way I can. Cheers!
If you ever go to alberta fishing, dolberg lake is full of 8+ lb trout. No boat motors , no bait. Fly fisherman dream with belly boat. Seen an old guy catch a 15lb rainbow.
Gorgeous cutty! Congrats!
Wow now thats a catch of the day. Lunch sorted for the week.
I let this guy go to fight another day :))
@@FlyFishDan even better glad you did. So big and colourful
Yessir! That’s definitely my dream!
I'm with ya there!
Landed 40 pound carp on a 6 pound line while I was standing on a waterfall, and the only way to get out , was I had to jump up to a ledge 9 feet high, while holding onto my rod with my mouth , praying to god my line doesn’t snap and that my size #8 hooks stays in him. it took 1 1/2hours to tire him out, I was numb 30 minutes in.
Gave him to local Chinese store for free food 🤣
Thats a beautiful rod and reel
Thank you! That would be my Sage TCR 590 (5 weight) with Orvis Battenkill large arbor - great fishing karma :))
The fake drag thing was funny😂
Nice one
Thanks!
Just broke the tip of my fly rod so that means no fishing for 3 weeks till its repaired
NOOOOOO!!! Sorry to hear that!
Nice rainbow, but I've caught bigger in Wyoming many times
Thank you - there are certainly larger westslope cutthroat out there...but this guy was my PB - heavy shoulders which you don't see often on these cutts. Cheers!
Awesome catch man 👏 👏 👏
You and other fly fisherman are really making me wanna get into fly tying.
Thanks 👍
Damn Dan! You’re videos get better and better brother. You inspire me to keep learning this hobby
Very kind of you to say Shawn, thank you! Glad to have you here - Cheers!
We’d catch about 4-5 of those whenever we went fishing in the mountains in Oregon
Love that!
I felt that hook-up
That's awesome - thanks for the great comment!
Nice cuttie! Ide be so scared of the tippet snapping, 4x is like 6lb test if I remember right. I usually run 5x, but I'm in NC where we don't really get many donkeys
I was sweating this one for sure - she held tight!
@@FlyFishDan
Dan,. Where were you fishing ?...
Beautiful Cutthroat... Monster
I've landed 20"+ on 6x. Really helps to have a rod with a sensitive tip that protects tippet well. Always fun though when they decide to bolt into some strong current and test your drag.
nice Oncorhynchus Clarkii great landing!!
I had to Google that! Lol ...thank you and great comments!
Love it! Omg I miss the salmon fly hatch in Montana.
Thanks! Me too!
That one looks like a Derby winner
I think you are right...if it was a derby, I landed first place on this day :))
What a gorgeous rod
Thank you!
One of my biggest regrets is leaving Colorado before I learned how to fly fish. Ik its it not the only place to do it but its definitely where I want to personally 😭
I'm with ya there! Colorado is pretty amazing for sure.
It actually looks like a dream
It was a good day indeed :))
Beautiful catch mate 🎣 😉 💪🏼
Thanks!
Well done, landing a fish of that size is definitely a challenge. Listening to the noise of the water flow is making me nostalgic.
It was a good day indeed!
Your video is really crisp. What camera are you using?
I am using my iPhone 13 Pro Max filming wide angle 4K 60FPS
Man i love that set up!!
She's got some really good fishing karma!
@@FlyFishDan ya my pole is on of my dad's, prob as old as me lol but still gets the job done! Never fly fished yet but have the essentials, even a homemade lil fly, he's ugly but it's mine, kinda like my pole lol now that I just bought a reel over the winter, can't wait! I'll be picking up tips till then! Thanks!
Beautiful catch
Thank you!
Phenomenal catch! Right on the corner of the lip!
This was really cool for me because, as a novice fly fisherman, setting that hook at controlling all that extra line by your feet proves challenging. After watching this I’m going to try and do as you did here. Nice catch!
Awesome - it's always about keeping control and reducing slack...sometimes I can get it on the reel...sometimes I don't and that is totally normal when fly fishing. Good luck to you!
Nice catch. Love that feeling
Thank you! So good!
Even better when you beat the fish that’s been using the current too makes it all the more sweeter 😍
I see you get it Matt - thanks for the comments and taking the time to watch!
@@FlyFishDan my pleasure mate. What part of the world is this looks absolutely amazing? My PB is just shy of 10lbs in the Snowy Mountains of Australia 🙂
I thought that was a salmon at first lol
He was hefty for sure :)) Thanks for watching!
Dang! Nice fish bro!
Thank you Mr. Noneyabidness!
Did that this morning!
Sweeeeet!
That does look like fun!!

So much fun Jason!
That is a neat looking rod
Thanks! That's my Sage TCR 590 5-weight with Orvis Battenkill II large arbor reel. Love that fly rod!
I love it when you get that first hard strike
Beautiful rainbow
Man...I would love to be there just vibing
It was a good vibe this day for sure :))
Big Fish: *Alright guys same time tomorrow? Haha okay, 😯 ooh look a yummy sna-*
Side pressure my dude! Gets em turned and also tends to be less chance of them spitting the hook.
Good tip! Always tough to remember in the moment...my dad used to always say...'ROD TIP UP!!!' Old habits tough to break!
@@FlyFishDan yeah it's tough to break. I did "rod tip up" for a decade. Doesn't help that many guides still teach this (although to be fair the subtleties of using side pressure can be tricky to teach a newbie over the course of a day). I have Lance Egan to thank for a lot of great fishing advice including this. That man is a freaking fly wizard!
Beautiful. Nice Fish. !!!!!!
Thank you!
Beautiful control there! Nice fish brother!
Thanks! I was very fortunate to land this guy in such a heavy current. So much fun!
Awesome fish!! Have you tried using side pressure (rod parallel to the water and pulling low towards the bank)? Helps keep them in slower water deeper in the column so they don’t jump or spit it. Don’t think that fish was gonna be able to spit that or thrash free though, awesome set!!
Thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to watch! I was always taught by my dad, rod tip up!! (I hear in my head while playing a fish)...maybe it's time I learn to use rod position technique when reeling in a big fish. I appreciate the insight!
Many ways to skin a cat!
Nice one. Dig the way you manually worked the drag - pro level.
Thanks Enzo - burnt out drag - have to get that fixed!
Wow what a beast of a cutty
Thank you! He was hefty for sure :))
Man I’ve never understood how to cast a fly rod or the purpose of them, but will say that is a nice looking reel on there and a beautiful spot to be fishing
I've got a few videos that could help you out with the cast. Generally, the appeal of a fly rod is the super light action and no weight to influence the play on the fish. Makes for a really fun fight. Cheers!
@@FlyFishDan I will check them out thanks
Nice fish buddy!
Thank you!
Him "how canadian do I want this"
Camera "90% buddy"
Him " OK, I wo t say sorry for catching him buddy" 🤣🤣
Lol - thank you for the comments and for watching! Cheers!
Never had to usel y reel to cast a fish. Thats amazing!
Great job on learning him🐠🐠🎣
Yes, thanks!
Stream fishing is by far my favorite thing to do. Unfortunately I don’t live anywhere near water source like this. Still water sucks
Very sorry to hear that! Time for a move one day perhaps?
Nice trout. I glad we seen the fish in the video short
More to come! :))
Nice catch. What weight is your rod.
Thank you! I was using my Sage TCR 590 (5 weight) - fast action, love this fly rod! Cheers!
Gorgeous bow brother. Beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
@@FlyFishDan same to you sir. The weather has been amazing. Nailing some beautiful landlocked salmon and Rainbow trout myself. That Rainbow you got though is something else man. I've been hitting them on a field mouse fly what fly did you use?

Solid cutbow! Caught a couple like that yesterday but I think yours is a little bigger. Definitely stronger living in all that current. Mine were out of a reservoir and caught with bass tackle.
Bro that was sick I love fishing
Me too - thanks for watching! Cheers!
We both said “holy crap!” at the same time lol
Nothing beats hooking in to one and immediately realizing you didn’t come prepared for the one on the other end lol
