Thankyou for this and especially for the discussion on hymns. I'm in the Uk and brought up Methodist so don't know all the Baptist Hymns but recognised enough to get some answers to the quiz. I only came to faith in my 50's in a PCA Church outside Atlanta but have sung hymns to myself all my life. Out loud, often much to the amusement of un churched kids and husband at the time.
I loved Beths comment that she sometimes wakes up half way through singing a hymn in her head. I've often told Christian friends that I'm sure it's God's way of keeping me focused on Him. Much as music has always been part of my life, sorry not Country music, I stopped listening to anything but worship and rarely find myself singing anything else these days.
Please don't think that I don't applaud all you're doing for those who are distressed by, have even like yourselves been seriously hurt by ,the current crisis and division in the Church in USA by writing this book and broadcasting discussions. Praise God that you have had the courage to take a stand, you Beth and others, for the real Church, the truth and the Gospel. I arrived in US in 1999 and retired from working in my Church 2018 before the real divisions were exposed. However I'm still watching and praying. The UK Church is hurting too but in a different way and needs prayer for the growth of the true Church. Thankful that in Acts it's clear that the Gospel goes out during and despite times of persecution and attack. God Bless

Good Saturday afternoon from the kinda gloomy SF Bay Area. Well, well, well, well, well. I grew up in the 50's & 60's in an Evangelical family. My mother's father was a Free Methodist minister in Washington state and missionary in Japan early 1900's, same with the grands and great-grands. The aunts and uncles were all pillars of their churches or missionaries. My father's side was Dutch Christian Reform from Michigan. Lots of sailors not so much preachers. When my parents met in Seattle singing on my Grandpa's Old Time Gospel Hour they fell in love, married, and became Presbyterians. Dad felt called to the ministry, left his lucrative career in engineering, was ordained, had some small rural churches, left to become a Navy chaplain. You can assume we grew up singing all the old Gospel songs. I knew at about the age of 10 that something was deeply wrong with Christianity and Christians. When I graduated HS in SoCal I immediately moved to NorCal and began my life as an artist and musician.
Here's the rub, I didn't reject Jesus because, as I have always said, he was not a Christian, it is his life and teachings that are the center of him, what he brought to us and what Christianity has forgotten. Golden Rule? Beatitudes? Suffer the children to come to me? Many years ago I found the teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda, and a very strange book called the Urantia Book, at the very time I was praying for something deeper and more universal. These two influences helped sort through the Christian maze. God drew me onto this path as an independent spiritual person, no labels, no church defining who I am or what I should believe, no male domineering. I do not "believe" in God any more than I "believe" in gravity. A fact is a fact. In my experience religion, just like everything, evolves. As the centuries since Jesus' birth have passed we have seen religion change drastically. We are in a strange time where the progress we've made is swinging back to the Medieval. I'm beginning to wonder when people are going to start a movement to undo the Reformation, to burn witches and torture people for their beliefs. In some countries this is already happening.
CT was in our house my whole life. When I saw David Brooks was in conversation with Russell Moore I decided to watch, then this one. I remember when Bill Moyers left the SB's because of the growing intolerance, I didn't know about Russell. I see that you have so much in common with my spiritual community I wonder if there is a way we could join forces. I am going to share your channel with some of my folks, we are actually facing some of the same horrible divisions under the black cloud of the Malignant One's (DJT) shadow. I am going to buy the book, too.
Sorry for the lengthy missive! Thank you. Chappell (pronounced as in goin' to the chapel) Holt
PS I still sing many of the old hymns with my autoharp.

The Hymn Book is making me miss hymns and laugh because in Ky.. Im right with you.. We didnt sing them all either.. The piano player played fast.. We were all related and my mom would complain all the time about she played them all too fast . Then we had America. HYMNal for awhile and actually I have an old blue Baptist Hymal 1956... It doesnt have the stars and moon. Because we hadnt gone to the moon yet? Now I too am wrong , because when older people didnt like the youth weekend..Ive used the Here I raise my Ebenezer , as in they have no idea and I dont either.. But I will look it up..
I do love that our generation knows the hymns and also I love the Contempory stuff too.. I hope we can still use Hymns too.. We do sometimes but not often..

People are leaving the church because they have been feed a gospel of works and not Jesus Christ.
Law Gospel Distinction is so important.
Pleasing the Lord is resting in his finished work not our works. Revival is knowing a law/ gospel distinction
The SBC has failed at feeding the sheep properly
