  • Among the many ancient yet lesser-known temples of Lord Shiva, the Stambheshwar Mahadev Temple in Gujarat finds a special mention. Apart from being one of the oldest shrines, the Stambheshwar Mahadev temple is known for vanishing and reappearing twice during the day.
The temple is located a few meters away from the seashore. Therefore, during high tide, it submerges and in low tide, reappears. Since the level of the sea rises twice during the day, the temple vanishes and emerges when the water recedes. The Garbha Griha or sanctum sanctorum gets entirely covered with the sea waters. Only the pinnacle of the temple structure (constructed during recent times) remains above water.
The temple is visited by devotees of Shiva from various parts of the world. People queue up on the seashore to see the wonders of nature that creates a spectacle of sorts.
It is said that despite being a demon, Tarakasaur was a great devotee of Lord Shiva. He did intense penance to please him. And Bholenath, as we all know, was pleased by his devotion. Tarakasur took advantage of the opportunity and asked for a boon that shielded him from death. But since death is inevitable, Lord Shiva asked him to ask for another boon. Therefore, Tarakasur wished for a blessing that none other than the six-day-old son of Lord Shiva can kill him. After his wish was granted, Tarakasur created havoc in the three worlds and caused massive destruction. Therefore, to put an end to his tyranny, Lord Shiva created Lord Kartikeya from the flame of his third eye.
