You should try some food in KMN resturant, its not a fancy restaurant, more like canteen, but prices are cheap, and food is amazing, probably closest to the home cooked meals i tried in Belgrade. It is located inside of the mall in zmaj jovina street, entrance is about 50 m from the intersection with knez mihailova street (same group of building as Belgrade art hotel). You can try some proper sarma, podvorak, and similar meals there, they sell food by weight, all the food is on display, and variety is great.

It's pork meat that counts in our barbecue, always mix! 😉

You could've changed your apartment for a better one, with an elevator, it's low season and I'm sure hundreds of them available in the city centre.
Smoke, yes, it's a major problem, though in almost three whole seasons out of four there's an option to sit outside, most places have their open-air spaces.

IMO, the best fish soup in Belgrade is at Ada Tsiganlia, "На крај света" (Ат he end of world) restaurant. At "Radetski" in Zemun it is also very good, though different style.
I've been living in Belgrade for over 40 yrs and have not yet heard for "Serbian favourite restaurant". 😂

In fact, I am not sure that the Sausage came from the Hungarians, for example, Germans and other Slavs make sausages even though they do not border the Hungarians. I'm from the very south of Serbia, and sometimes when I'm in the north, I miss our homemade sausages, they're a lot spicier. What we have certainly taken over from Magyar is Goulash.

Sausages are deeply rooted in Belgrade's culinary tradition, and thanks to people like Karl Perol (an Italian confectioner who was not only involved in confectionary but also in making sausages) and Bogoljub Rosulek (a young Serbo-Czech, born in a country known for sausages and beer, came to Belgrade in 1887 to work for Perlo. Rosulek practically introduced "fast food" to Belgrade, almost a century before McDonald's), they have become a favorite gastronomic delight of Belgraders. I don't know exactly what kind of sausages they brought, probably those characteristic of the Czech Republic and Italy. By the way, in Serbia we have many types of sausages that have both our own and foreign origins: domaća kobasica, roštiljska kobasica, sremska kobasica, kulen, čajna, sudžuk, peglana kobasica, viršla, and many more.

If you want to experience the best things, then meet some locals who will certainly help you with the best advice, where to go eat cheap and good, or what ever you want. Don't be afraid, Serbs are very friendly and helpful people, Serbia is one of the safest countries.

If you liked "ćevapi", best restaurants in Belgrade are "Walter", "Dekijev ćevap" and "Žar Mance". Also you might want to try "rolovani ćavapi", which is basically the same thing as ćevapi but wrapped with bacon. For more traditional cooked dishes you might want to try restaurant "Zavičaj" or "Завичај" in Cyrillic (pronounced: "Zaweechay") not far from your Airbnb if I'm not mistaking

@@GizmoAndCompany Don't miss going to Niš and Pirot in the south of Serbia. If you like ćevapi and pljeskavica, the barbecue there is much better and more varied than in Belgrade or anywhere in Serbia.
In Niš kafana's Mrak (must), Beli bagrem, Nišlijska mehana, Kod Brke in Jelašnica. The town of Pirot has excellent gastronomy, with dishes that do not exist anywhere outside Pirot.
Kafana's Ladna voda, Piroćanac, Vitina Iža. Because I saw you like pizza, Pirot has the best pizza in Serbia. Picerija Mamma Rossa.

We did a little research before trying it - this is what comes up on google when searching kajmak: “Kaymak, sarshir, or qashta/ashta, is a creamy dairy food similar to clotted cream, made from the milk of water buffalo, cows, sheep, or goats in Central Asia, some Balkan countries, some Caucasus countries, the countries of the Levant, Turkic regions, Iran and Iraq.” But if you have a correction we are open to it :)

Verovatno ste culi i znate o cemu govorim...
