Consider doing a second series of videos with Dr. Layng when you're in Seattle. I love these videos!

Alejandro Diaz dig into podcast “constructional approach to animal welfare and training” I think there’s an episode there

Can we get more info on how this is different from systematic desensitization? Maybe I was trained wrong during my undergrad internship at the Cleveland clinic but what Joe described is exactly how I was trained to implement systematic desensitization. I would love to learn more about the distinction between the two and if there is research comparing the two approaches :) I am positive he knows way more about this than I do!

He described the constructional approach - systematic desensitization focuses on narrowing of a repertoire (i.e., kinda of akin to tolerating it) as opposed to the more expansive rewarding of alternatives in the moment. Unsure if there's things that compare the two - they both work if implemented as intended, constructional wins IMHO as it's not narrowing a repertoire.

Hmm interesting....I have always conceptualized Systematic Desensitization as doing both as well because you focus on teaching the replacement of staying calm or whatever else you are training. Teaching to "tolerate" it would imply the person demonstrates "anxious" behaviors such as certain thoughts, body positioning, physiological responses and then eventually stops displaying those, which to me more describes Exposure and Response Prevention than Systematic Desensitization. Its possible I was trained to do it "wrong" or different than how others are trained. There is surprisingly very little literature on the topic inside and outside of ABA.
