Probably thousands of tenors can sing the notes with perfect pitch. BUT -- only a handul can imbue this song with the pathos and sadness that the lyrics demand. Johnathan is at the top of that very short list.

This song was written as folks were excited on the way back home to a family reunion. It was meant to be upbeat and excited. That's why Denver delivered it like he did. It did not demand this pathos. Its pretty, but it takes the excitement of the reunion and takes it to a weariness and sadness that is only perceived by some to be demanded.

    Became their last communion
On this lonely barricade, at dawn.
Oh my friends, my friends forgive me
That I live and you are gone
    There's a grief that can't be spoken,
And there's a pain goes on and on
    Phantom faces at the window,
    Phantom shadows on the floor,
Empty chairs at empty tables where my friends will meet no more.
Oh my friends, my friends don't ask me
    What your sacrifice was for
    Empty chairs at empty tables
Where my friend will sing no more.

Phenomenal! I remember him from Got Talent days and he is even more sensational than I thought he would be. The cellist is unbelievably talented with tear dropping sounds emanating from her instrument.

My heart is breaking listening to this incredible rendition by both Jonathan and the cellist. A stunning performance! Thank you both so much.

Many versions done, but this one is BY FAR the best! So much emotion behind a brilliant melodic voice backed up by a great cello!

Oh man, that just hit me right in the feels. He is the only Opera singer that can make me cry. Such a beautiful, passionate voice.

I have listened to this song by him multiple times in the past 3 days. Makes me stop what I'm doing and just listen.

I've been listening to different artist sing this song. Jonathan does it the best by far.
