It would be nice if they ported the DS versions of 4-6, and 3DS versions of 7-8 to modern consoles eventually, and I'm sure they'll port Dragon Quest 11 to more consoles. Unfortunately they ported the phones versions of 1-3 on Switch, and they'll probably show up on other consoles too.

The mobile version of Dragon Quest 4 adds the party chat feature that was in the Japanese version of the ds remake but was cut out in the localization. So I recommend the mobile version instead of the DS remake.

I like DQ6. Yes it does feel like the characters and overarching story are half-assed after defeating True Murdaw but that was ok with me. It's a huge game full of fantastic vignettes and the feeling of adventure feels the greatest in this game. It truly feels like a game where paying attention and keeping note of things NPCs say is important because their pieces of information will be important to exploring the world. While DQ4 and 5 were more story and character driven, I appreciate DQ6's departure from that.

The trick 6 pulls on you with the Hero's identity, the small hints you get about where the dragon that takes you to Murdaw's keep came from, everyone's favorite edgey boy Terry... there's a lot to like when it comes to DQ6.
Also you get a frickin' Hackasaurus party member. That's awesome.

Mfs sleep on VII because it's so long, but it really is good. The storytelling is excellent, the visuals and soundtrack are just lovely, the chapter structure feels concise and digestible, the world was engaging as it changed around the player, and the characters are all at least fun and most are memorable, with a special shoutout to my homegirl Maribel. I personally couldn't care less about how long it is, it's more Dragon Quest, I'll take that, and it's really good Dragon Quest at that. Perfect game to end the PS1 library on, like damn if I died and my last words were "Dragon Quest VII" I'd be pretty goddamn happy with that.

Even though i love all the DQ games i played, my top favorites are VIII and XI S for their stories, characters, and their voice actings. Though my honorable mentions are III and V. They're the best of both Erdrick and Zenithian trilogies. My team for III was Nikolai the priest, Samantha the mage-turned sage, and Mozarella the martial artist and supposed ancestor of Morrie from VIII. The big choice you make in V was a lot to think about for me. You even get another option in the remakes. I'm waiting for X to be localized and for IX to get a remake because i want the full experience with the online functions that are now expired on DS. They could use nintendo network for a switch version. By the way, the mobile version of IV is the best. The biggest flaw with the DS version is the missing party chat only found on mobile. Kiryl is one of my favorite allies in IV because of it. Even though i always name the hero after myself, i never address his name as such when i read the game text, much like for when Trode or Yangus speaks to the Hero of the Cursed King.

Having played DQII for the first time recently on the Switch collection, I've got to say I don't get the Prince of Cannock hate. He was the most well-rounded and dependable character in my party and only died once or twice and that was in the outside area before the final castle when I was just grinding for some levels. Idk maybe they tweaked him in later releases, but yeah if anyone is the worst character in that game its the Princess because of her very low HP. Great list regardless.

    My list would be...
not included: VI, X (didn't play em)
8: IX. I guess what bothers me with Dragon Quest games with class systems is that they feel solvable--and not just for endgame. I hate how much better certain weapons are than others except in extremely niche situations. My favorite parts of DQ battles are ailments and managing damage against huge groups, and both of these elements were heavily de-emphasized in favor of damage set-ups against single targets (probably to better facilitate climactic multiplayer moments). It's hard for me to make my own fun unless the game forces me to, yk? Also, the set-up of the story when you're an angel is WAY cooler, and I wish I could have been a separate entity from my party and guided them around.
7: III. I'm feeling contrarian, but I don't know... to me, it feels stuck between the modern and classic style. Going from 0 to Sage with my party sapped the fun out of the class system. The scenario has many highlights, but I didn't feel battles were challenging enough to justify how much questing you do, and the scenario (despite the twists) drags for me in the last third.
    8. VII, for similar reasons. I don't like how you get a billion redundant skills in the 3DS version. I wish it was more like FFV where I had to choose the perfect combination of what I have instead of making a bunch of God-tier prestige class characters. I try to play these games without guides as much as possible, and I felt punished for experimenting; when I stumbled upon Druid and Champion, I was like, "oh, nothing I did with the class system mattered until this point." I appreciate how experimental the story becomes; despite not having many overarching plot twists, it surprised me more than any other DQ, and that counts for something!
6: IV. I liked the individual chapters a lot more than when the story all came together. Instead of all the characters' stories intertwining or culminating in strong thematic links, they all just become faceless combat-bots and the story shifts to the plight of the world. Also has some really annoying difficulty spikes.
5: I. I just love going through this every now and then! It's just satisfying. Every time I play, I remember/forget juuust the right combination of details that I'm learning without totally trivializing the game.
4: XI. I played with all Draconian Quests on to start. I eventually took off the NPC-related shypox detriment, and after defeating the Kraken, I tried with armor & without poxes on everyone, and the extra degree of control offered a more empowering kind of fun (making me wonder if they should have just implemented a hard mode based on the EXP limit & harder monsters). Even with all these restrictions, after the opening hours, the game didn't become difficult until massive bossfight spikes. Like, even without armor, level caps, and only a 3/4 chance to act on all characters, random battles were kinda limp and easily avoided. Even so, the combat options go very, VERY wide; the game being perfectly complete-able with all the Draconian quests is a testament to its sterling battle system. I just wish the encounter design/resource management matched up. But overall, it's a rousing adventure with incredible town concepts.
3: VIII. It's just so solid! I'm replaying it right now. The 3DS version adds so much new stuff. It's the kinda world I'm happy to just hang out in. The combat feels both limited and really deep with the skill system & fixed parties; the balance of early game/late game efficacy, efficacy versus single or multiple targets, buffs and debuffs and heals attached to your physical attacks... Even the meat-heads get some depth! And even in a game where physical damage dominates, the variety & size of group encounters encourages magic, and choosing when to buff/debuff and with what spells becomes very important as bosses change their behavior with damage. It has one of the best, simplest crafting systems in a game. Yangus is my husband.
2: II. I'm sad this one's the dark horse. It was the one DQ game I NEVER had to look up a guide to complete because the NPC dialogue is so thorough (in the Switch/mobile remake, anyway) and the combat is straightforward yet challenging. It's tough, but ailments are very powerful; it's a beautiful interactive slot machine. Managing the economy of damage prevention, healing, gold... The time you learn skills and the distribution of equipment in the game is so finely tuned (though, yk, high friction). And the scenario! Looping routes back and forth between all the towns in order to un-knot the scenario satisfies me SO deeply. And for a retro RPG, the emotional pay-off is INTENSE. I can imagine why it's so maligned, though, considering even the adjusted encounter rate is brutal & the dungeons are hard to keep track of (widescreen probably helps a lot--no idea how you'd get through the GB version!!).
    1: V. Deborah!

      @battlegeekplus  Před 3 lety +1

Great list! I'm hoping DQXII brings back and revamps the class system since it seems so inconsistent from game to game.

    • @cantrip7
      @cantrip7 Před 3 lety

@@battlegeekplus I think the class system would shine if Dragon Quest XI's battle mechanics acted as the base; tanking mechanics, scaling magic damage of various elements, and ailment-focused physical attacks... there are so many new niches for party members!
My ideal would be something like... each class, instead of having linear skill learning or multiple 100-point skill paths, would have small, DQXI-style hex grids, maybe with the ability to start developing from a redundant skill node from other classes (like dual-jobbing in FFXII). You could use the class system to further spread out the specialties behind weapons; if thieves, rangers, and mages all have boomerang trees, they each respectively & separately learn their utility, scaling physical damage, and flat magic damage skills. Do you focus on a specific weapon as a jack-of-all trades, a multi-weapon user within a specific party role? Do you focus on stat gains & passives or go for the strongest skills first? Etc.

You did my boy DQ7 dirty, but I can't complain about the rest of the 6 or so I've played. I' enjoyed the little things in 7 like how the dialogue changes if you run away from the first boss you fight, and then there's the slow buildup around the mysterious ruins in the PS1 version that males your first trip to a new town so monumental. Gameplay-wise it seems to take notes from DQ3, and I wouldn't have it any other way. In fact, I'd say unlocking the job class system in DQ9 is one of the hardest and most rewarding experiences you can have in a DQ game. They really make you earn it!

Dragon Quest 8 will be ever BY FAR the Supurior one for me.
DQ11 was noice, Good story, but so small areas compared to the Openworld of DQ8 and for an DQ MAIN Title on PS4 in 2017, and After the second reusing from enemies, Areas (I mean, they reused all the known areas as OPTIONAL POST GAME DUNGEONS, WTF) at the Post Game Dungeons, I quitted. I like the DQ8 Story a LOOOT MORE, because LEVEL 5 really have a talent for real touching Stories.
It was like an Anime Adventure like ghibbli. And yes, Ni no kuni 1, I must continue this great Game (also from LEVEL 5)!
Have a Great Day/Knight, I'm waiting still for the next DQ Main Game (DQ3R or DQ12, and hopefully Not so much reused stuff), the DQ10 West Version, and of course, very underrated, Dragon Quest Heroes 3 (They didn't toke so much time for the second)!

    My list:
    10. II its rough and honestly feels like a slog to get through after all these years.
    9. I its the OG, but I think its pretty much a novelty now.
    8. VI I just could not get into this game's story or characters, and I really didn't like the class system as much as I was hoping to.
    7. VII I have a soft spot for it, but its just too darn long of a game. When I hear people complain about games being long, I laugh and just remind them of VII.
    6. V I know this game has a lot of fans, but I just wasn't that invested in DQ waifu edition. Plus I really disliked the monster party thing being gutted in the remake.
    5. VIII This is also a really popular one, since its a lot of people's first game in the series, but I just kinda found the story kinda lacking.
    4. XI A fine game, and one of the best of examples that JRPGs can work in the modern era. No need to gut your gameplay or world to make it work *cough FF7 cough*.
    3. IV this one is a toss up for me, I love the cast and fun story of this game, but its almost tied for number 2 to me. Also you can be a girl in this game, which helped. lol
    2. III I love this game so darn much. Yes its dated, yes some of the stuff is cryptic, but its classic DQ to me. Also the first time you could be a girl in the series.
    1. IX Easily my favorite game in the franchise. Its III on steroids; fully customizable parties, great class system, multiplayer, and a story that actually got me to tear up.
I have not played X, unfortunately. I really hope that SE or Nintendo try to bring the game over a la PSO2 someday; but I know the chances are very low on that front.
