I remember seeing him ages ago, probably around the time he started doing solo tours, at the Bardentreffen open-air festival in Nuremberg. Small stage, very intimate, good crowd, and somewhere way into his gig, he said "here's an old song. Paid me a lot of money... spent most of it!", and the he played "Down Under". Wonderful.

I thought the same thing. Most singers like Elton John and even Freddie Mercury would hit lower notes. Now I know in a concert they have to stretch their voices for the duration of the show and I'm sure they could still hit those notes but they go low instead of high.

I heard this the other night and just had to come back and listen again. What a perfect, live performance. No special lighting, no auto-tune, no backing musicians or vocals. Just a supremely talented artist and his gifts. I didn't appreciate this song enough when I played it on the radio as a DJ back in the 1980's. In fact, I'd forgotten all about "Overkill" until about a week ago. Now, with the fullness of time, age and I'd like to think, a little wisdom, I've gained a whole new perspective and appreciation for the soul in this song. The way he sings "ghosts appear and fade away" is as haunting as witnessing the actual event.

Colin is a really nice person too. I first met him in Canberra, Australia around 1990-91 - after Men at Work had split. He was solo at Tilley Devine's Cafe (Lyneham). Only a small audience - perhaps 30. I am sure he walked around and spoke to every patron during the breaks and after. I have seen him a couple of times since in DC. He just gets better. I regret never seeing Men at Work.

I've never in my life seen one man and a guitar make such a a powerful and atmospheric statement, he doesn't just play the guitar he brings it to life like its some sort of living breathing, at times snarling yet majestic beast, capable of hitting you straight in the heart while taking you on an emotional roller coaster ride and that key change is almost inhuman for anyone without having to hit falsetto, I take my hat off to Colin Hay, he is indeed a bona fide legend who in my opinion is up there with Marley, Elton, Clapton, Stewart and Lennon

    • @TheCooderix
      @TheCooderix Před 2 lety +2

People didn't suddenly get worse at singing. There has just been a shift in sound, but also in availability of music. There were some absolutely terrible sounding musicians back in the days, many of which still went on to make hit songs because they had the right sound. Likewise there are tons (probably more than before in fact, because the bar is actually higher) of great sounding artists today with incredible vocal ranges.
But chances are if you don't like the artist or the sound, then you're going to judge them unfairly. I'd never listen to Charlie Puth, but the guy has perfect pitch for god sake. Technically he could sing better than most artists, yet do I think he sounds great or makes great music? No. It's subjective at the end of the day.
Colin Hay isn't a very technically great artist. He just sings in a way I like and makes music i'd listen to.

    • @migsyt
      @migsyt Před 2 lety +2

@@TheCooderix I agree, and that's partly my point. Many artists today make it into the mainstream via a deliberate search for a very generic sound. Those with, let's say, a more interesting voice or vocal style are facing a much bigger challenge to get noticed

68 yrs old and still sings like he’s 20. Unbelievable! A big part of it is he quit drinking and smoking cause he knew they were destroying him. When he sings “waiting for my real life to begin” he holds out a note near the end of the song that I can’t do to save my life, and I’m a pretty decent singer. Colin is incredible. He should be playing in front of 50,000 people instead of 50.

    I can't get to sleep
    I think about the implications
    Of diving in too deep
    And possibly the complications
    Especially at night
    I worry over situations
    I know we'll be alright
    Perhaps it's just imagination
    Day after day it reappears
Night after night my heartbeat shows the fear
    Ghosts appear and fade away
    Come back another day
    Alone between the sheets
    Only brings exasperation
It's time to walk the streets
    Smell the desperation
    At least there's pretty lights
    And though there's little variation
It nullifies the night from overkill
    Day after day it reappears
Night after night my heartbeat shows the fear
    Ghosts appear and fade away
    Come back another day
    I can't get to sleep
    I think about the implications
    Of diving in too deep

Thank you so much for this. It's great to hear Mr Hay belt out this stunner of a song from my teen years. If you turned on a radio in the 80s in Australia you'd hear some of the best rock and pop ever - and so much of it made by Aussie bands. They wrote songs that were uniquely Australian but could be enjoyed anywhere in the World. It made me proud as an Aussie teenager that our small country could produce so much great music; music that still stands up, decades after it was recorded...🙂

I just turned 15 and a half when this song came out I had my driving permit and the first time I heard it I was driving myself to school with my mom in the passenger seat, we were in her Caprice classic and I heard this song and the dreams started ,and now I'm 55 and I look at the time between then and now all the relationships, heartbreaks, loss of loved ones. I still have my mom and she's getting old, 85, if she passes before me I would really like to play thus song at her funeral. I remember the day about 85° partly cloudy and I'm driving, everybody look at me. The brevity of life is what gets me, you live your days in the moment not realizing that those moments will just be memories in a matter of hours.
