BACKPACK That's a Swiss Military Salt and Pepper Pack. They're very hard to get and pricey nowadays. You might fine one on eBay. They're really cool and retro but probably more of the collectors item than something I'd use on a daily basis. If you're looking for a similar quality canvas and leather type pack the best thing going right now is Isle Royal Frost River Pack amzn.to/2iLr2gZ or www.frostriver.com

I got my Granfors Small Forest Axe, yesterday. The only thing that I did not like was the smoothness of the handle. It had more ripples than a pond in a wind storm. So, I boned it today, sanded it lightly and coated it with boiled linseed oil. I took my Old Imer Lumberjack and took all the ripples out of it, sanded it with fine sandpaper and put a good coat of Linsheen on it. I will put one coat a day for a week, and then one coat a day for a month. It will have a good finish, afterwards. I will lightly sand it with 440 between coats.

I did not like the finish on my new SFA, so I have refinished it. I boned the original finish off of it, sanded it and put a good coat of boiled linseed oil on it. I am now on the second coat and I will hand rub a few more coats on it. Mattius Blitz forged mine. The metal work looks great.

The only thing that I did not like about my SFA was the finish on the handle. I don’t think beeswax and paraffin makes for a good finish. I boned off that crap, sanded it and am putting a boiled linseed oil finish on it. When I get through with it I will have a wonderful waterproof finish on it. Then, I will put its new leather handle protector on it. If a linseed oil finish is good enough for my finest firearms it is surely good enough for an axe handle!

Best pack axe I own though I’d want something bigger for a homestead if u want American made us go with the council velvicut axes if I spelled that right in 5160 not as good as a gransfors but not very far behind at all and a great American option and a little cheaper I think. On my small forest axe I still want the leather handle wrap and maybe an extra and even better leather blade cover but definitely the handle wrap.
