      A trick for your ridge cap.... Cut some flashing strips from your scraps, say 3" x 10" or so.. . nail 4 of them onto a long 2x4 with flat roofing nails.. then screw those flashing strips in your top row of screws so that you'll have a walk board to stand on.... Make sure, when you nail the strips to your board, that it lines up with your highs, of coarse.. super easy to do and easy to move works great and doesn't scratch the roof and allows you to not be bending your ridge outta shape while you work.

    old family house had a vaulted ceiling (i believe it was done with scissor trusses) and there was an air pocket between the interior ceiling and the roofing plywood that ended up trapping moisture and heating up a lot.So even those roof types need to be vented

    • @dalewilliams9846
      @dalewilliams9846 Před 4 lety

      I had one that I did with a vaulted sealing this year and it caused heat to enter the house badly. It had an air gap, but I had to pack it full of expandable foam on two separate occasions and put a felt paper over the ridge before installing the ridge cap back. I wont be venting vaulted ceilings anymore. Not saying this problem will happen every time, but it caused me a lot of headache.

    I gotta say I’m pretty damn impressed at how much you know about this I’ve been a roofer for a long time and I can say I agree with 98% of what you said the only thing I didn’t agree with was that they defiantly have a lot of roofing options that last longer than 15 years but then your getting into expensive territory and also we always put screws next to the rib so when you look down it you can’t see any screws but where I live we don’t get a lot of snow it’s about 1-2 months a year but we also have about a 90° weather change

    Hello Rich, I have to say that each steel manufacturer has his own recommendation as to where to put the screws be it peak or valley. Most of what I have used is on the flat with stitching screws (smaller shorter ones) used on the seam overlap and the peak cap. The other thing you might be missing is the panels are designed with the contours to be able to take the expansion and contraction. To overdrill your pilot holes is counterproductive because if drilled to be just a bit undersized when the screw is driven the steel will 'volcano' just a bit. Now when the neoprene washer comes down it makes an even better seal on the projection and water will most often run past very easily rather than climbing over. Take a look on some old steel at the screw holes and you can see this. I have not seen and have no knowledge of a properly screwed roof (as you say don't squish the seal) leaking. My own has been up for thirty years in our coastal high winds (at least once per year over 100mph) , wet snow and 160+ inches of rain per year without any failures. I am totally with you about walking on steel. I won't do it if it is even dew damp! And a harness is a must for even the most dare devil of installers. Take care. Doug

    On the ridge cap, I put it on after one side of the roof metal has been installed. When installing the second side of the metal, slide it under the cap and install screws in the 30 (or 36) inches of the new metal as you go along. This will keep you from having to go out on the ridge after all the panels have been set. If you do it last, besides flattening the ridge cap, it is almost impossible to set it straight!

    For people that watch the video and didn't click SHOW MORE under the video:
    As for ridge screws; check with the roof supplier. Some warranties have changed in recent years where-as the screws are installed on the ridge, the warranty is voided. I had my roof installed in 2012. The builders installed ridge screws (thus far no problems). In 2014 the same metal roof company changed their warranty (applied to 2014 and later installation) to only cover roofs that have screws in the flat areas.
    Also, IF you are screwing into the ridge, BE SURE you are using the longer screws (NOT the 1" or 1.5") because the shorter screws will back out over time due to the roof flexing in hot and cold weather.

    how do you install roof vents with the metal roof? I'm wondering if we can use our existing square vent and whirlybird locations not just a ridge vent. (maybe i missed it?)

    A guy did our "Tin" roof using two foot spacing on the rows of screws, and didn't put down strapping. He snapped chalk lines to get them all even. Only problem was, every second row of screws went in the crack between sheets of plywood! The result: loose and weeping screws. (Screws always loosen due to the metal expanding and contracting with temperature changes.) So make sure you offset your rows to miss the cracks. You could make the first row at 18 inches. We tighten the screws every year, and put in bigger diametre screws when they don't hold any more. We've changed them out three times now. I keep saying I'm going to back the screws out, get up inside, and nail strapping on the underside of the deck, to give the screws some meat to bite into. But it's a pain, and I keep putting it off.

    Great info and nice details. Only suggestion I would have to viewers is to never use exposed fasteners like this. They will always lead to failures. The sun will destroy that little rubber washer leading to leaks. Or if that screw isn’t perfectly perpendicular and perfectly driven it will leak. Thanks for the video

    Princeton, Texas on the West side of lake Lavon My class four roof lasted 22 years ,winds of 80mph plus were not unheard of 1985 -2007,the roof was not leaking when I had it replaced, I though I had the best the roof could give, the insurance company gave me a 10% discount on my homeowners Insurance. The new roof had a 25 year warranty.

    Excellent info on the dog house. I’m in Ontario Canada and planning to strap and do a similar rib roof for our unheated detached garage. When they built our garage in 2008, they blocked between the roof trusses at the peak. Since it’s unheated, I’m thinking to not cut the ridge sheathing for a ridge vent. Would like your thoughts on this. Thank you.

    Hi--great informative video...just a couple questions, if you've got a minute...regarding James Biggar's comment regarding underlay over the strapping to prevent rot--valid point, or not a big concern with shingled roof and it's vapour barrier still in place? (The garage example he'd used was direct over ply in an unfinished space).
    Also, I'm in Ontario, and don't mind driving--could you please point me in the direction of your supplier (the prices you'd mentioned in one of your replies is pretty hard to beat)? Thanks again for sharing so much great info
