- "Chris Lam Tries Leaving BuzzFeed For The First Time." :P Of course I would make one right after these videos officially become jokes to the internet. There are so many parody "Why I Left BuzzFeed" videos I see around now. But I still felt the need to make one. At the very least to let you all know. To ask for support for my future projects. And to remind people that at the end of the day, BuzzFeed is still just a company. It's not the best or worst place to work at. For what its worth, BuzzFeed has given me a lot. I have no idea where I would be without them. And I will always be grateful.
I'm really scared and excited at the same time about the future. But I know I can do it with your support.

That was just a bunch of Management and HR bull... Yes, it is time to leave. BGB-BAH GURL BAH! Rule of thumb-- if you are unhappy and feel that work is unhealthy... its time to bolt out off there. Never ever compromise your own happiness and health for work, titles, or money. There are better things to do than just work there are better things to do than what you were doing there. Always remember that your priority is your own happiness and health.

You probably don't remember me, but i had the pleasure of meeting you not long ago around the end of June at Little Tokyo. I was actually daydreaming in the distance when you suddenly came into view, and I quickly nudged my sister and said, "Wait is that guy from Buzzfeed." She looked at me quizzically but freaked out when she recognized you. After handing us stickers, handshakes and such, I remember asking you: "Are you still at buzzfeed?" and you replied with a cheerful "Yeah!" I was almost going to ask you how you felt about those Why I Left Buzzfeed videos, but I thought that may have been too rude. Once I saw this video, I gulped.
I did, however, compliment on your I Gave Up Engineering To Follow My Dreams video. That video truly resonated with me on many levels, but I couldn't find the words to express it in front of you except "I really like it." But the worst part of all, I couldn't even recall your name. After our meeting, I literally had to search almost EVERYWHERE for your name (the search bar on their website is broken I swear). I really do wish that Buzzfeed give credit where it's due, especially when they have few gifted individuals in their team. Aside from that note, I can't wait to see you more in the future and I'm so excited to see what you have planned on your channel!

Thank you for this. I think Buzzfeed could really work on their diversity and actually compensating those people as consultants. From what I could tell, they have become more and more of a viral video factory rather than making a real effort on giving a spotlight on disenfranchised groups. I did notice that they are making an effort to credit their staff but like you said, it's a little too late for them to find and credit older videos since they're pumping out videos so quickly.
I'll admit though, I would still try out for Buzzfeed or heck, even SuicideGirls, despite the iffy contracts and stuff, but I will go in with realistic expectations. It will probably hurt to be featured and not compensated or credited properly but I live in a foreign country where there aren't any companies like these where I am.
Exactly! That's what I was trying to convey. Go in knowing what you're in for. Because you can still get a lot out of it! Just don't have this starry-eyed perception that BuzzFeed is the best company ever and there is nothing wrong just because you don't see it.
For future BuzzFeeders:
1. Keep a record of all projects you worked on.
2. Go on Glassdoor and look up the average pay for your job title.
3. During your annual review, print out all your research/record of your work collected and use it as leverage.
4. Use your personal brand image and following as leverage as well.
5. Be confident on your worth and not passive, know your worth.
Having a degree in business helped me learn my own worth and leverage my worth for any company. Start learning your worth, how to leverage your skills, and negotiation.

I don't remember when or how I came upon your channel (I know somewhere along the line I first saw you on buzzfeed). You have always stood out to me from the rest of the buzzfeeders because to me you seem to always have a genuine passion for minorities 110% of the time. I have loved getting to watch you grow through this channel and with your other content. It is creators like you (and Bernie Sanders because a boy can dream) that initially inspired me to go into political journalism, and to be an advocate for equality, so I thank you so so so much from the bottom of my heart for being true to yourself. I hate how buzzfeed is the first mainstream media company that represents minorities at all but behind the scenes, they just used those same minorities within their company as resource slaves or tokens. It really makes me mad and hurts my heart. The horror stories I've heard from people that were hired for diversity teams just break my heart and piss me off. Good for you for making this video. At the end of the day, your resume is outstanding. I think that you and all of the other talented producers that have left buzzfeed should band together and make your own resource company that represents minority communities that are always either tokenized or completely ignored.

Everything you said about mixed messages/progression/recognition is so true to me and so many other people our age I know.
