Has the manual 991.2 GT3 knocked the halo Porsche 911 R off its perch? Find out with my road test of both!
Your camera positioning in-car is perfect, and that R acceleration run was pure JIMP. Great channel - subbed
Thanks for the kind comments - means a lot!
Nice! Waiting for part two!
The halo car is 997 GT3 4.0 The last of the great mezger engines. The engine that won all the championships for porsche.
Whats the difference between a Mezger engine and a DFI? What makes the former so special and why did they ditch it?
Thanks for the detailed comparison! I had never seen a comparison of these two before.
Thanks for the feedback, Terry!
amazing video man!... cant wait for the second part
Thanks for the kind words!
Keep it up buddy, amazing input, this is what we are looking for. Just your voice audio needs to be better quality. Can’t wait for part two.
I do record voice audio onto a separate mic but it takes sooooo long to edit up, like double the 16 hours this vid already owes me. Appreciate the feedback though and maybe it's worth doing going forward!
Awesome video, Lee. Answers the question we’ve all been asking
Thanks DB.
Hope you will have a video about 911 GT3 Touring, can't wait for that
Good review! Looking forward to Part two ;)
Thought you might be!
very detailed review! Learned a lot!
Thanks for the feedback!
Can't wait for that part 2! :)
Thanks! Landing by the weekend!
Great video! seats in the R look peng, looking forward to pt2
Thanks!
Thank you for this review. You should have 100x more followers.
Thanks for the kind words!
Great job Lee, really enjoy seeing this comparison and looking forward to part 2 with the GT3 Touring pack. Interesting to hear the difference in engine sound and overall road noise coming through in the 911 R. Does the 911 R engine feel grittier. Maybe a little buzz compared to the GT3 or vice versa. The GT3 engine just sounds more refined. Love both cars and to own either one would be a dream come true. keep up the great work!!
Thanks for the kind words! The R feels superior in every way, shows Porsche knows how to skin a cat more than anybody. You won't feel short changed with a T3 though…
I'm in the process of configuring my gt3 touring this week! The 911r was my dream car but couldn't afford it, so as soon as the gt3 touring was announced i booked one. Waiting to see your video comparing the two. Hopefully they are very similar.
You certainly will not feel short changed with a GT3 Touring! Amazing car!
Awesome video Lee.
Thanks John!
Awesome video. Keep it up!
Thanks Craig!
Fair play!!!
Such a great video ! I am really looking forward the part 2, can you tell me when it shall be available?
Thank you! Part 2 available by Friday!
Lee I really need your help...
I have to lock my order (991.2gt3) before Monday evening, only 1 or 2 track days a year...
So wing or no wing... ?
If you're going to be using the car for track days I'd go for the wing. Let me know what you go for in the end!
No problem, i'll let you know... By the way, about track days, I live in Le Mans ;)
Still not got my 996 back, but guess what i am inspecting for a client on Wednesday? & hence why i am here 👍
Good to hear!
That Nine Eleven Guy send me an email to timkelly@motorclaimguru.co.uk i will show you what i was inspecting today 👍
Or , are you on twitter or linkedin? I have very good contacts that may well benefit you. uk.linkedin.com/in/tim-kelly-motorclaimguru-ltd-4ba63319
Got to love a 911, no matter which one you choose
I have a 2007 Cayman S with manual and love it
I would choose the GT3 for myself if I had the money! 😂
Hate the way speculators pushed the R up in value, no way is it worth a GT3 plus a 911 turbo and a GT4 in value 😳
John S yup. Was pure speculative push by resellers. I never even looked towards 911r. Nothing remarkable about it.
John S Exclusivity sells mate.
Extra Mile - Luxury Car Reviews & More
It certainly does seem too 😳
John S GT3 here
Such a good video
Thank you!
Supercarsofthesouth agreed excellent video
I had the last GT4 in the UK and probably in Europe.
Was delivered in OCT 2016
I've subscribed to many channels on CZcams but this is one of my favourite by far. It must take a really long time to edit these videos so that they are all 9 minutes 11 seconds long! Appreciate the dedication there. From a Porsche magazine that compared a 911R against a 997.2 RS 4.0 and 991.1 GT3RS, if I can recall correctly, it stated that the 911R felt pretty unstable at high speed braking on the autobahn with its lack of aero. I'm super excited to see if there are subjective+objective differences (aside from the obvious appearance differences) between the 911R and 991.2 GT3 Touring pack in your Pt 2 video. Perhaps the 911R will be 30-40kg lighter so that it might feel more 'lively'? But the increased torque from lower RPMs with the newer 991.2 GT3 engine might perhaps overcome those weight differences? I would love to fit -14.5kg lighter magnesium wheels from Manthey Racing and lightweight aftermarket exhaust system onto a Touring Pack and compare that to a 911R , if I had the money for that luxury of course 😂
Thanks so much for the kind words, that means a lot! Yes, the R doesn't hunker to the floor in the same way an RS does past 100mph as the aero on the modern Rennsports gives incredible downforce. Without giving too much away for part 2, I was surprised how different again the Touring was to the manual Clubsport, Porsche is superb at showing there's more than one way to skin a cat. Love your comments re: Manthey wheels and aftermarket exhaust, may well reduce weight but the R has a finesse to its mechanicals that - so far - is yet to be matched. What a car!
That Nine Eleven Guy the leaves the only variable as the single mass flywheel ... if you have better engine and less weight via mods in GT3 Touring
Wow! Great video. For the price, the GT3 wins hands-down, right?!
Thank you! Put it this way, you won't feel short-changed with either car in your garage.
The Gen 2 GT3 manual will appreciate in value very quickly.....
You can get a 911R in LA for $350,000- with say 2,000 miles on it...
Great video again Lee and interested to see how the 911 GT3 Touring stacks up, I suspect it may just have the edge. I have a 991.1 GTS tucked away in the garage and the GT3 Touring would be a great car to have next if Porsche built a few more for enthusiasts
Thanks Gareth! 991.1 GTS is an absolutely cracking 911, hold on to it for a long time! Agreed re: GT3 Touring, the fact Porsche is building these cars full stop shows it listens to its customers. Full respect from me.
Take the Touring out of the bubble comparison and speak of it in relation to all cars available .... Touring need more credit for being the best sports car on the planet for road use ... FULL STOP !! The R is for museums and shows
Gotta wonder how many miles are on each car. If the 911R is well "broken in" and the GT3 is new, I wonder if the gearbox will loosen up a bit once you have more miles on the GT3.
Happy to report the R has nearly 5k on the clock and is used hard. Even did a track day in Oct! Re: GT3 gearbox, I've some interesting observations in part 2, as the Touring is different again!
How many miles on the GT3 in this vid?
1100, IIRC.
I would expect the personality of the car to change a bit once it's broken in. People are reporting the transmission, clutch, engine, exhaust, suspension, etc... all change after 2-3K miles.
GT3 is a press car which frankly is hammered from the get-go, 1100-odd miles would all be hard miles. Thanks for your opinion.
When is GT3 Touring video is coming out ?
By the end of the week! Currently editing it…
Shit, another video of my manual 991.2 gt3. It now lives down in New Zealand. Still going strong.
Not sure you put the exhaust on the R matey
I had a play with it on and off but it was so loud anyway, it didn't need it!
I wish Porsche would allow customers to customize cars with options they actually want. #1 Rear seat delete on all models. Gorilla Glass options, center spoke wheel options, paint to sample break calipers, sunroof option on GT cars etc. You shouldn’t have to pay $300,000+ to design a Porsche Exclusive Edition. Ferrari will literally allow customers to design the body style of their custom car.
Notice the length of the video, coincidence
Your voice was difficult to hear over the engine/wind noise when driving the car. Otherwise great subject material and execution.
Thanks for the feedback, will take that on board!
True. Had to use earphones. Didn't hear my wife calling for dinner. Now I'm sleeping on the couch 🤦♂️
Ahahahaha, brilliant! Cars always get us into trouble with 'Her Ladyship'!
OK but the GT3 doesn't have those retro seats.
Touring package w CXX in houndstooth...
Who is this “ghost” and why is he not being given up?
it's funny all the enthusiasts love manual on open roads but will they drive it everyday in heavy traffic? i dont think so.
Roger Lee Yes, they probably will. I have a manual GTS and it’s always a pleasure to drive, whether on the open road or in heavy traffic. Had a PDK before and it bored me to tears.
Good heal and toe... ;)
Cheers you legend! Link-up soon yeah?!
Great video! But I can't help but think (after watching numerous reviews from owners and reviewers) that the people that drive these cars, Porsches in particular, are cream puffs. Sorry... couldn't hold onto that any longer. Carry on.
I'm not going to rise to that, but icing what you did there…!
sort your sound out
Is that an order, captain?
porsha is the smartes company ever they know people wants manuals but they sell you pdk first then after they sell a bunch they gives you manuals to sell even more buajajajajajajaja
Neither. The last real Porsche 911 was built in 2011, aka the 997.2 GT3 4.0. 991's are bloated, numb, and disconnected.
Fascinating opinion! Agreed the 997.2 is something of a sweet spot in the 911's lineage but then others will say it stopped at the air-cooled cars, others will say it stopped at the long bonnets… however I disagree to the idea that a car like the R is numb and disconnected. Cheers for sharing your thoughts!
