The Crown of Roses is part of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s series of “Sixteen Children’s Songs”. Using vividly arranged traditional Russian folk melodies, the song tells the story of a childhood encounter between Jesus Christ and a “troop” of playful children who pressed a crown of thorns on his forehead. This draws parallels to the death and crucifixion of Jesus, ultimately expounding on the Christian themes of suffering, redemption, and Christ’s unconditional love and sacrifice, even to the very people who mocked and scorned him.
