It does exist special indicators (I've got one) with a moveable dial (which does not turn with the probe) making far easier the reading that what you suggest. Probes with different lengths help to adapt for different situations and mùakes it possible to read while the lathe is running (lower speed...).

Hey I saw your comment on a gyrojet video, I'm wondering how the project is going, any luck yet?
I've not progressed on it because I'm not sure on the legality of it and I'd rather play it safe.
better not to have loose sleeves or ....big beard when turning...
