I like to think that someone noticed that Ash needed help, he went to the hospital, and then later met up with Eiji where they moved to japan and lived a happy life.
I think that last vine literally sums up my reaction. The reality didn't sink in until the end of the episode... I just felt cheated. That's like taking down a huge optional boss and then somehow getting duped by some low level monster that has a cheap one-shot atttack.
Yeah I had literally never cried at the ending of a movie or anime but then this happened and I think 1/2 of it was literally because of how cheated it felt
to me, it felt like ash chose to die. he didn't die because of the stab wound, he died from blood loss because he walked all the way back to the library instead of trying to get help or help himself. i guess to him, dying peacefully, with the letter of the one he loved, in his favorite place, was more than he could ask for :(
MisschiefLolz you've described how I felt perfectly. I'm typically very good at judging how events will happen through anime but I had been fooled 100% into believing in the moment ash read the letter that he'd go to Japan and be happy for the rest of his life with Eiji. When ash got stabbed I feel like I'd been stabbed too, right in the heart, I was in complete shock - I couldn't even cry. I still feel incredibly cheated 😭

3:42 This basically translated to the AshXEiji ship sinking to me. Also, that last one. Rest in peace Aslan. Rest in peace. But I've got some good news for those who watched the anime (spoiler warning ahead; do not read unless you've watched the entire series!!). The fact that Ash'll never have the chance to live a normal life with Eiji, and not have to worry about him dying half the time is honestly what gets me the most in this anime. It's really depressing, really, that there are people who have to live like Ash did, and can't have people to care for, in fear that they'll die because of some sort of mistake that they've done or will do. This anime not only revealed the truth about the cruel, cruel world we live in, but made us realize that we all die eventually, whether we have lived a full life or not. Ash never did live a full life; he was constantly closed off to the world, and lived in hate. Hate for the one that made him like that. Eiji helped put a hold on that hate, and helped to prevent Ash from doing things that he might've regretted, and also was one of the reasons why Ash decided to stay alive; to protect Eiji. Eiji also was a light for Ash; showing him that perhaps he could live normally, as a normal teenager. But, alas, the manga had to end like it did, and Ash died. Buuut I never said that Ash died in the anime. In the 24th episode, we left off with Ash lying in the library, seemingly dying, while it was still light outside (keep that small detail in mind). If you look back into the second intro of Banana Fish (which is called Freedom by Blue Encount), you'll see Ash slowly limping towards an unknown destination, while holding his left side with his right hand (the same side he got stabbed in). What's more is that it is dark outside, and that Ash is wearing the same clothing as he was wearing in the library. So, it is a good possibility that Ash survived and fell unconscious in the library. He then later woke up and decided to get treated, and meet up with his gang. Maybe a few months afterwards, he decided to go to Japan, and meet up with Eiji. MAPPA, the company that made Banana Fish, as well as the well-known Yuri!! On Ice, has this character chart of all the BF characters, showing which ones are alive and which ones aren't. If the picture of the character is gray, then that means that the character has passed away. If their picture is still colored, though, then that means that the character is still alive. What's more is that there are lines/arrows pointing from one character to another, showing who killed who. For example, there is a line leading from Ash to Golzine, indicating that Ash killed Golzine, but no line leading back from Golzine to Ash, meaning that Ash had not died by the hands of Golzine, like we all known. Instead, we've been lead to believe that Ash had been killed by Lao, Sing's older brother. If you take a look at the character chart (I'll put the link down at the end, for anyone wanting to take a look), you'll see Lao's *grayed picture* and Ash's *colored picture.* This means that Ash *did not die by Lao's hands.* Rather, he was just stabbed, as shown in episode 24. Lao missed all of Ash's vital organs, so if Ash did die (which he did in the manga), he would have bled out, which is a painful end to meet. However, that brings us to our next clue; the library in which Ash had supposedly died in. The New York Public Library (the library in which Ash had died in) generally closes around 7:45 in the evening on a week day. Let's just assume that it was a week day when Ash had gotten stabbed, and that it was close to maybe 7:30, since one can bleed out quickly in this kind of situation. It would usually take about 5-10 minutes for someone to bleed out, but we're gonna assume that Ash can survive a bit longer because of his iron-like body (as said by a doctor in the series or whatnot; I don't remember exactly lol). Anyways, since Ash can hold out a little longer than a normal human, he would probably survive long enough for the closing time of the library, and would have to leave. Perhaps he decided to seek medical attention or something, and ended up at a hospital under a false name. Anyways, there's a lot of evidence that Ash survives in the anime. There is some official art of Ash and Eiji in Japan and the two opening a cafe called "Banana Fish" (ironic). But, of course, Ash did sadly pass away in the manga, and Eiji was severely impacted by it. He completely changed his life style after Ash had passed away, so says Sing, who was taking care of him when Eiji came back to America. Eiji wouldn't cut his hair after Ash's death, saying that he wouldn't cut it until he was over Ash's passing. To Eiji, he was the reason for Ash's death, since *his* letter had distracted him, and made him unable to notice Lao coming up on him. If Ash (the manga version) were still alive today, he would be turning 53 on August 12th. Eiji would be turning 55 sometime in May (he doesn't have an official birthday, sadly). Shorter would be turning 53-56 this year (Shorter doesn't have an official age or birthday; poor Shorter). Now if anime Ash is alive, he'd be turning 19. Eiji is turning 21 and Shorter would be turning 19-21. Sing is turning 16 this year (yay, good for him!), and Yeet-Long (Yut-Lung) is turning 18 (y'know, I found out that in the manga, Yut-Lung was assassinated a year after Ash's death; not sure if this is true or not in the anime though). Oh boy, that took an hour. Finding info while writing this is pretty hard lol. But I hope I gave something for the anime watchers to grab onto. I read the manga, so there's no getting over the fact that Ash died. But you anime-only folks can believe that Ash survived. Also, sorry about that *huge* essay I made lol. I swear, my fingers are gonna fall off one day- Anyways, I shall sink into the darkness now, and attempt to rewatch Banana Fish while trying not to feel sad about the ending anymore.... *MAPPA Character Chart Link (for anyone wanting to take a look at it):* bananafish.tv/special/relation/ *Banana Fish Manga (for anyone wanting to read it; Imma warn you, Garden of Light is the depressing part.
