A superb record of a very moving day, my grandfather fought on the mole at Zeebrugge as a Royal Marine on that fateful but glorious day in 1918 ; he survived, many didn't.
Whether the raid was a logistical success is debatable but the boost it gave the British people in that final year of war was immeasurable.
It was thus with pride that I was part of that procession and the tribute to those brave men.

My pleasure David. Couldn't agree more. I took a video of the 2016 Commemorations at Dover St. James Cemetery and at the Town Hall that is somewhere here on CZcams. A different choreography but very moving. Unfortunately this time at the Cemetery I was moved from my vantage point on the bank overlooking the Cross Of Remembrance by 'Security' which was unfortunate as the only other position available to me was on the other side where wind played havoc with the recording. Nevertheless I have undertaken a bit of amateur editing and put the 2018 Centenary Service at St. James on a 15 minute video for anyone who might be interested. Best Regards Patrick

I did read a brief history on this raid ,the landing parties of marines and saliors in some cases were armed with nothing more than a cutless or a cosh against machine guns and rifles.

Ty for sharing, unfortunately this not a good conflict for marines, it's amazing that fortitude, a willingness to cope against the odds, brings a soul to the other side. Lest We Forget. RIP ALL THE BRAVE SOULS WHO MADE THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE.

The Brits do love their ships and guns and drums and flags and banners.
A life on the ocean wave
A home on the rolling deep
    Where the scatter'd waters rave
And the winds reveal their keep
Like an eagle cag'd I pine
    On this dull unchanging shore
Oh give me the flashing brine
The spray and the tempest's roar
A life on the ocean wave
A home on the rolling deep
    Where the scatter'd waters rave
And the winds reveal their keep
The winds! The winds! The winds their revels keep
The winds! The winds! The winds their revels keep
Once more on the deck I stand
Of my own swift gliding craft
Set sail! Farewell to the land
    The gale follows fair abaft
Of my own swift gliding craft
Set sail! Farewell to the land
    The gale follows fair abaft
We shoot through the sparkling foam
Like an ocean bird set free
Like the ocean bird our home
We'll find far out on the sea
A life on the ocean wave
A home on the rolling deep
    Where the scatter'd waters rave
And the winds reveal their keep
The winds! The winds! The winds their revels keep
The winds! The winds! The winds their revels keep

But the mission failed and the British losses were much higher than the Germans. Why do the brits celebrate this?

    • @ps77880

Because it is a commemoration to remember all those lost or wounded during the operation, not a celebration.

Because it worked, enough to make the difference needed. The cross-channel supplies were in danger from early U-boats and fast raiding craft operating out of Zeebrugge, relying on the inland canals to travel safely from Germany, and it was imperative that be stopped. As a result, it was decided to scuttle several ships in the throat of the canal/harbour entrance. The usual fog of war took over, and the raid was eventually withdrawn. It was a mixed success, insofar as it heavily reduced the passage, enough to dissuade the Germans in the medium term.
My uncle, Ken Creighton, was one of the survivors, and after the war, turned to Butlering. Having an RM by the name of Creighton as butler was clearly somewhat humorous. His peripatetic nature meant he never stayed long in any one household, and it passed on to a son, Kenny, who ended up running The Admirable Creighton, the antiques shop in the Square in Romsey. Kenny is the spitting image of Lovejoy, but his adventures far surpassed the TV equivalent. With his father's access to the forgotten attics of country houses across the entire South of England, and a landed gentry no longer wealthy, he could hardly fail.
Kenny's mum was my dad's sister, their dad the CPO in charge of the RM Officers' Mess at Pompey. There again, we saw a certain similarity to CPO Pertwee in the Navy Lark, the accents used being far more Hampshire than Plymouth. In the 1970s, Dad had risen to eminence as a Mechanical Engineer (my 8 year old brother having coined Tom Cruddas' ultimate FAA Trafalgar Day joke, that there are three kinds of swordfish, Little Boy Swordfish, Little Girl Swordfish, and Fairey Swordfish), and was asked to join Prince Philip's support team. They then discovered they dad Grandpa in common, and got on like a house on fire. As a result, dad got to form the CEI, and the IMechE led out in the emergency supply of ventilators at the start of Covid, March 2021. Heck, even I got to play as I found an electronics company with the capacity to make the boards needed!
In the longer term, it also taught us how not to do it. Dieppe confirmed the lesson, while the American landings in North Africa demonstrated that the original beachhead thinking was viable, as it remains to this day.
