I have a soft spot for Meet The Beatles. My father dubbed it off to his AKAI X-150D reel to reel deck and included Something New, Beatles '65, and Beatles IV. He use to hold me on his lap when I was really little and rock me to that whole tape. He passed away peacefully last year. I hear Beatles music overhead in the local grocery store I work at. Puts a smile on my face.
The Beatles are trashy communists that had childish stupid songs.
@@topazthecat8704 Hey, thank you. Lol...my wife calls me Tabby. I've been told I have the characteristics of a Tabby 😺
Interesting fact: The UK version was released the same day JFK was assassinated.
I always find it interesting when famous albums release the same day as crazy world events.
Wich was also the day the first episode of “Doctor Who” premiered. So many Brits were watching the news they redid the episode.
Good choice of words. It's not exactly a "fun" fact.
@@joshua2814 The first Doctor Who episode premiered on the 23rd November, 1963, which was probably when the news reached the UK
@@thomsboys77 Makes sense. I was only speaking from what I remembered on the pilot DVD. IIRC, they were filming the next episode the same day when the cast heard the news.
Man can't believe this came out 40 minutes ago, it already feels like a classic.
Despite it’s 12 songs, Capitol Records created a perfect “debut” album for the Beatles using all but one song, Till There Was You, written by George Harrison and of course Lennon & McCartney. Those Capitol Beatles albums will always be meaningful to me because, as an 11 year-old in January 1964, they are what I grew up on in the USA.
perfect 1st side - poor 2nd
Back in 1963 or 1964, EMI released "With the Beatles" in Brazil with the UK's track list but the title of the album was changed to "Beatlemania".
They did the same thing in Canada. I did not know they released that title in other countries!
Interestingly, the Parlogram and Pop Goes the 60s channels did similar comparisons of these albums in recent months. Both favored the Capitol track listing… and I have to agree. Given the strength of the original material and the punch of the “Hand” single, the covers are not really missed.
I don't care how distorted my UK copy sounds, I will cherish it and listen to it. It's beatlemania fresh off disk! Meet the Beatles is a fun little album, it super nostalgiac for me, it was my first beatles album!
I grew up in the UK. ‘Nuff said!
This is such a great video idea! Would love to see more of this
I've been waiting for this one for a long time. Thank you!
The UK version is the album The Beatles created for their fans. 14 songs no singles which they felt was a good value for their fans.
I'm an old timer so I have to go with "Meet The Beatles!" because it was the album that I grew up with and it was the perfect album to launch The Beatles in the U.S. market. I felt it was a "statement" album as if The Beatles were saying "From now on, things are going to be very different." As for the cover photo, I always felt that the blue tint was a nice touch.
Na. Meet the Beatles is commercialised American stuff, With the Beatles is what the Beatles intended
Great video, I didn't know about the UK singles and albums being their own separate things! Good stuff!
I’ve come to really love the first 2 UK Beatles albums - the energy they give off is fantastic - almost punk in some cases. Just brilliant! Because I’m a Brit, I’ve not heard the US release, so it’s With The Beatles for me!
To show where the disconnect was in the album world, the number two album after Meet the Beatles, was the singing nun album! We’re talking the woman who sang Dominique
I enjoyed watching this
I like the UK album cover the best. But, I'd give the US tracklist a slight edge over the UK. I like that it's mostly Beatles written songs. As for mono or stereo, I agree that the album is better in mono, for the reason stated. Both "With The Beatles" and "Please Please Me" sound better in mono to me.
Meet> with mostly because it includes two of their best early singles
The minimalist “with” wins on design, as does 99% of all Uk over Us releases (I do kind of like putting “I’ve just seen a face” to lead off Rubber Soul, and then putting the harder rocking things from that period on yesterday and today
Another great versus episode. Definitely need “Let It Be” vs “Let It Be…Naked” at some point
There were very artistic pop album covers in the UK even before the Beatles. The Cliff Richard album, just entitled Cliff was very artistic for its day 😊
When I was getting into the Beatles in the mid-90s, I’m really happy that a friend turned me on to the fact that I needed to only be looking for the albums with the Parlifone Logo £
This is going to be a barn burner!
I prefer Meet the Beatles. Having I Want To Hold Your Hand to start off the album really works imo, and all the cover songs that are missing are on Beatles 2nd Album, which is also a great record. I should note, even though the UK albums were available on CD at the time my first exposure to the Beatles was via cassette copies of my dads Capitol albums. So this is what I grew up with which probably colors my opinion.
Also, fyi, Meet The Beatles in mono is a fold of the stereo mix. Not that it really matters as it was a 2 track master anyway.
-Capitol stated that MTB was the first album by The Beatles because it was their first Beatles release. They also were not going to acknowledge the Vee Jay album, not only because it was on another label, but it also stood out like a sore thumb that they passed on it. In other words, it was a face saving gesture by Capitol, to avoid the embarrassment of passing on the very first album by the greatest rock band in history.
-they included “I Saw Her Standing There” because it was the B side of the Capitol “I Want to Hold Your Hand” single. That’s also why that song is right after “I Want to Hold Your Hand” on the album, instead of “This Boy”.
-the cover songs from WTB were put on the next Capitol release, aptly titled “The Beatles Second Album” (boy, did they stay up all night to think of THAT title 😀😀😀)
-the reason the stereo mixes sound as they do in all of The Beatles early Capitol albums is that they’re not true stereo. The Beatles recorded their early albums in mono, as was the custom of that time period. It also was cheaper than recording in stereo, and EMI didn’t want to hedge their bets on a newly recorded band. Mono records also sold for less than their stereo counterparts, so for some time, mono albums outsold their stereo counterparts for that reason. But, ever wanting to cash in The Beatles’ popularity as much as they could, a stereo mix was made by placing the instruments on one channel and the vocals on the other. So, by doing this, you could have a Beatles karaoke track by turning down the vocal side 😂😂😂!!!
Actually Meet the Beatles is true stereo, the mono version is a fold down of the stereo
@@SoundlabStudios63 Incorrect. “I Want to Hold Your Hand” was the first song that The Beatles recorded in stereo in a separate session from those of With The Beatles, the “parent” album of Meet The Beatles. I Saw Her Standing There, the B side of the Capitol single and second track on MTB, was the first track on their very first EMI album, Please Please Me. The PPM album, being their first, was certainly recorded in mono.
Their first four track recorded album was their following album, A Hard Day’s Night. So, MTB, being based on WTB, was not recorded in true stereo, proven by the vocals on one channel and the instruments on the other. Because: why would they release it this way, if they had a true stereo recording?
@7JANEWAY look up Parlogram’s video on meet the Beatles. The suits over at capital records were only sent the stereo tape from Britain and had to make a fold down because they were too cheap to ask for the actual mono tape

I was hoping you'd do a review on this album. Do you think you could do Beatles For Sale/Beatles '65 UK vs USA?
"Meet the Beatles" was the first Beatles album that my parents bought, when I was a five-year-old kid. So, that is the one that I grew up with and prefer. I bought "with the beatles" when I was in my teens, and when it veers away from the familiar song order of "Meet the Beatles," it just feels wrong. All of the cover songs that Capitol omitted were included in "The Beatles' Second Album," which is a very consistent, rocking album all the way through. I think that Capitol got those first two albums, plus "Rubber Soul," right. As for the rest of the Beatles' catalog, the British releases are superior, IMHO.
You’re just biased because you’re American
I Saw Her Standing There was also the B side to the I Want To Hold Your Hand single in America. So, you have the A-side along with the UK B-side, and the US B-side.
Thanks for covering the cover and the songs, but what about the music- which one sounds better ?
Meet The Beatles is a rockin' album and a really fun listen. But, With The Beatles is the what the group wanted. So the only winner is With The Beatles.
But it is a nice trilogy of album titles, first there was Introducing The Beatles, then Meet The Beatles and then With The Beatles. After our introduction and meeting, we stayed with The Beatles for a good ten years.
The album is a Masterpiece.... Meet The Beatles was ours in the United States....that whole Album was fantastic 😊
Both of those albums have a great tracklist. This isn't a US vs UK Revolver debate where the answer is clearly the UK. It's a tough one to evaluate which one is better. The US Meet The Beatles is all originals and you get "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "This Boy". So artistically, it probably goes to the US. But, I'd say the UK one as a whole flows a bit better and it ends way better ("Not a Second Time" is great but it's a questionable choice for the closer, it's placement in the UK version is perfect). Plus, the covers as a whole are so well-done.
I have to say UK by a slim margin.
Next video will be “Please Please Me” Vs. “Introducing The Beatles”.
Mom has the original mono of Meet The Beatles.
Please do a video about The Doors.
This Lp is one of my favorite Lp's. yes, I randomly Ran into The Original Capitol 1963 - 1965 Lp's in Des Moines Iowa back Five or so years ago. the whole capitol Albums box set V 1 @ 2 which the cd box sets are. of course that day Was the day after my sisters wedding, and so I spent over $200 USD! I also scored a DJ disk of the Cyrkle's "Red Rubber ball" the white label versions, are slightly different than the Red Label release.
Cd's never will sound the same as an LP. since the wiring from the Cartridge was connected differently. vs what a cd, player PC. has for a Out/In put connection.
New turntables are connected wrong too. do Not "Ask Me Why". But, if someone knows "You can then all "Tell Us Why"
more variety = more money !!
Meet The Beatles! gets the win from me
Meet the Beatles is a masterpiece. The U.S. only got the Beatles "correct" three times before the White Album. Meet The Beatles, Rubber Soul and Magical Mystery Tour
No, UK Rubber Soul is best. US version is bland
Meet the Beatles and Magical Mystery Tour, yes. Rubber Soul, definitely not.
I like the UK version more. I have "Meet the Beatles" as CD from my US-Box Set.
I prefer Meet The Beatles. Partially because I know it better having listened to it so many times since I was 6 and knowing it very well, but I also like hearing I Wanna Hold Your Hand and This Boy on the LP and not as a 7” single. I really just find it a more enjoyable listen for me.
With the Beatles is best but Meet the Beatles was the first exposure for many in the US
And?
What was up with the LP something new Mono Vs Stereo. The Mono Disk has different versions on the LP vs the Stereo LP? I would, like you to cover this topic! If I am right every song was very different on the mono LP vs the Stereo. but, I am not sure if every song was or if Three or so were from the Stereo mix.
1. The Album Cover - U.K. version is definitely the better choice.
2. The Album Playlist - I think the U.S. version wins out ... okay, I'm really going against the grain here. I don't miss the covers on "Meet The Beatles" and I kinda get where Dexter was going with this, in regards to introducing America to the exceptional writing talents of Lennon/McCartney and the excellent eastern influenced "Don't Bother Me" by George ... it works in this context. ... plus ... I love the stereo version mixes.
3. The Beatles Second Album - Wow! Just friggin' wow. This is where those five covers ended up ... this is my favourite Beatles album of all time. Every track is a complete knockout. It's the only Beatles album I love "every" track on it ... no filler and none of Paul's granny music (if I was to quote John). The stereo version of "Money" alone completely blows away the U.K. version. Do a A/B listen ... you'll get what I'm talkin' about. Plus "Long Tall Sally" by Paul ... Lord have mercy.
Over all winner for me ... U.S. version.
The álbum title is not good. Beatlemania it would Be better. And the first track…she loves you
I prefer the hard left hard right stereo mixes on these tunes to the mono. It's really a matter of taste though.
What’s the background music you used in the intro for this video?
You should compare the Japanese version of meet the beatles!!!
UK versions ALWAYS for every Beatles album, even if there are a couple of the American versions that are at least a little interesting. Meet the Beatles! is one of those, I kinda like having 'This Boy' on there, but not over the cool Motown covers. You can't strip those off the album.
Beatlemainia Canada
Can anyone out there shed some light as to why "I Saw Her Standing There" was allowed to be on "Meet The Beatles"? The rights to the song belonged to Vee Jay ... correct? So how did it end up on both the VJ album and the Capitol album. Why did Capitol not use other songs as well ... like "Please, Please Me" or "From Me To You"?
It's due to the fact that in America, "I Saw Her Standing There" was the B-side of "I Want To Hold Your Hand", as opposed to in the UK "This Boy" was the B-Side.
Essentially, Capitol used both B-Sides from both sides of the pond.
Totally agree, the UK version is better. I think many Americans prefer MTB! just because they grew up with it, which it's perfectly fine.
Out Of Our Heads US VS UK next?
I actually don't mind the American version. Like you said, it's more of a Beatles experience music wise, but those covers on the UK version are just outstanding. Please Mr Postman is just perfection.
How do the original pressings of both albums compare in sound qualify?
UK mono pressings are best
With the Beatles definitely has the better cover but 2 extra songs makes me prefer its contents too.
I'd say the UK cover feels more like an album by a rock'n'roll band while the US one feels more like an album by a pop act, especially with hyping up how successful they are compared to the UK version which talks about what they did in the studio and things like that. As for the albums themselves, whilst removing the covers on paper seems like a good move, those covers were all great versions of those songs, often being superior to the original versions. When you consider that Chuck Berry would joke after opening a show with "Roll Over Beethoven" that he "thought he'd start with a Beatles song", that says a lot about the impact that The Beatles version had, because Chuck knew that there would be people out there that would more closely associate that song with The Beatles than with him. Also, if George was your favourite Beatle, you were missing out with the US version as he sings 3 songs on the UK version but only 1 on the US version.
I appreciate The Beatles music when I hear it but I'll never take extra step to dig into their catalogue. On the other hand I always watch documentaries about them and videos like this, because their story is so interesting. Can anyone recommend me/guide me the album I could start with?
I would start with the "red" and "blue" compilations (1962-1966, 1967-1970) for a great overview of their hits and some album tracks.
@@beatlejeb Thank you I'm on the mission right now 🍻
I hate how labels used to release different versions in different countries. The Beatles, Rolling Stones even AC/DC had this happen.
As a Brit I really don't think there's much of a debate with this - WTB is the album that the Beatles wanted the world to hear & is clearly the stronger product. Most of the covers are terrific!
I've got mono & stereo UK first pressings & generally prefer the mono one because of its warmth & depth but the stereo one is interesting because the hand claps on ROB are louder. It's rarer so probably worth more too I suppose. The sleeve of WTB is an absolute masterpiece too.
Absolutely mad that the one cover that Capitol left on was Till There Was You. That's the *one* tune in the Beatles canon (including Revolution 9) that I'll skip every single time 🤦🏼♀️
Cool video by the way pal
I don't know. I haven't given Meet The Beatles much thought over the years and since it's been 40 + years since I listened to it it's kinda hard for me to render a judgment. Truth be told I never liked the picture on the back of the Meet The Beatles LP. However, I guess it does sort of reflect the pecking order within the band dynamic, George and Ringo hanging out together in the back while John and Paul are out front. As for the song list, I prefer Meet The Beatles. The Lennon/McCartney numbers beat the covers that were pulled. That said, I wish they would have yanked Not a Second Time, which, aside from being a lame tune on its own, has that cheesy piano bit in the middle that has always drove me to distraction (thanks George Martin). Roll Over Beethoven would have rounded the album out nicely, one of the bands best cover tunes by far. Anyway, that's how I see it. Cool review. Thanks for posting.
Biased American
@@thomsboys77 I suppose so. Thanks for noticing.
Meet THe Beatles A Side / With The Beatles B Side
Meet the Beatles and Magical Mystery Tour are the only good US albums.
56 mins
Meet Beatles is better than With the Beatles but With is the Original!
Honestly I just ignored us album
I always felt sorry for American Beatles fans because they got badly ripped off by Capitol Records. We got far better value for money in the UK *and* we also got the versions of which the band themselves had far more artistic control.
The cover versions on "With The Beatles" are amongst their finest, especially, "Money", "Please Mr. Postman" and "You Really Got A Hold On Me." They're an essential part of the album for me.
I regard "With The Beatles" as the best of their early albums, that is, prior to the "Rubber Soul" LP where they stepped up to a whole new level in their song-writing, arranging and production.
Sorry but the US tracklist dominates the UK one lmao. Legit starts off with 2 of their best songs ever...
Then you can also include She Loves You, Twist And Shout, Please Please Me.. Where does it end, its an album not a compilation. of course the album has stronger songs when you include one of the best singles and songs of the last album
Meet The Beatles. USA лучше потому что нравится
Fun fact: it was originally going to be called " meet The Beatles " until the record company put their foot down and we got the now iconic " beat The meatles "
Stop smoking crack
With the Beatles has always been the weakest of the albums to me so I much prefer the U.S version. It's a much better collection of songs and it's mostly originals. Plus the two cover photos are basically the same and I much prefer the band photo on the back.
personally i think with the beatles is the weakest beatle album, but that says alot about the greatest band ever. perhaps their worst album is better than most bands best album. dont forget hit songs like She loves u, i wanna hold ur hand, from me two u ahould have been in that album
"With the Beatles" has got to be one of the worst album titles of all time. What does it mean? Is another group singing with the Beatles?? EMI had a history of bad album titles. The Hollis first album was named "For Certain Because" Really???
Because “The Who Sings My Generation” is such a great album title
interesting fact: uk releases always win
Cover or not, Money is one of all-time favorite Beatle tracks. Remove it, and I won't listen to the album. UK version for me.
For me The Beatles didn't start to become interesting until 1965. Before that just doesn't interest me.
