Resident Evil 4 is a classic, and is getting a remake next year! So with that in mind, I figured we'd round out spooky month with an Explosives Only run. It was easier and harder than I expected.
Can you beat Resident Evil 4 with only explosives? Guess it's time to find out.

The game has a cool difficulty setting. Enemies will have slightly more or less HP depending on how you've been doing, and the more ammo you have, the less ammo will drop. This also includes weapon types you have. If you don't have a rifle, rifle ammo will NEVER drop randomly.
So you might have gotten more grenades if you had no guns at all

Didn't he sell rifle ammo, even though he never bought a rifle? So that means he got ammo even though he didn't have the gun. I think he even sold shotgun ammo after already having sold the shotgun, meaning he got more ammo for a weapon he doesn't own
Edit: Correction, I realize ammo sometimes is pre-spawned onto the world with nothing random going on, I just realized that
There are fixed drops I tihnk for riffle ammo in some places. Usually always one near the first merchant encounter, I think a couple at the castle. Maybe one or two briefcases in the base....
the trick to making the run easy is not having a handgun at all. no handgun means that you wind up with mine-thrower ammo for days once you hit the castle, and unless you are shooting near the burde.... I mean Ashley, you can solve problems with reckless abandon. just make sure to pick up a gun for the few times you need to shoot her restraints off.
With all these grenades hanging around, Leon would have OWNED this town if he'd just thought to pack a potato gun.

I mean, RPG stands for Rocket propeled granade, so you not far off.
A couple tips from someone who has played this game way too much to anyone who wants to try this challenge themselves.
1: flashbangs will instantly kill any exposed parasites, such as the ones that pop out of enemy heads and the spider things in the mines.
2: You can shoot dynamite in enemy hands to detonate them.
3: don't buy the capacity upgrade for the mine thrower until it's low on ammo since capacity upgrades also refill the clip.
4: Keep an eye out for hanging oil lamps (mostly in the castle), they can be shot down and act as incendiary grenades.
5: During the Saddler fight, a special rocket launcher is given to you after enough damage is dealt, so you can start the fight with your regular one to instantly get the second, making a much easier fight.
6: You can knife bear traps to save ammo, but that's not really an issue in this run.
7: Replay on new game plus with the infinite launcher for a much more cathartic experience.
The Krauser fight at the end is my favorite especially due to the fact he takes like double damage from the knife because game logic lmao.
It's a respect thing. If I wanted to have a knife fight I would definitely allow myself to take more damage if my opponent uses a knife. Just common decency really.
Not double, it's like 20 times as much (equal to a max upgrade broken butterfly I believe)

My favorite thing about the bug room with the nest is if you shoot it enough, it falls off the ceiling and explodes and gives you a lot of treasures

The rocket launcher in the castle is the only time you can carry 2 RLs at once. The merchant doesn't sell one if you have one in your inventory already, but if you buy one, the RL in the gallery doesn't disappear.
You can do the same thing with the Punisher handgun by shooting the blue medals. Buy the normal punisher, then fetch the freebie, and you have two.
Man, lemon playing games other than souls games is such a breath of fresh still his content is second to none.

Indeed. I hope he does XCOM: EW (Enemy Within) with only non-primary weapons soon. This means only pistols, grenades, rockets, and melee as offensive options. Rather limiting, if you ask me.
Does the Explosives Only run not count?
I guess it does count... though I imagine that a non-primary weapons run would probably be easier... and thus less un-fun.
Another FUN XCOM: EW challenge run would be the unaimed run. The rules are simple: you may not directly aim at an enemy other than with overwatch. Free-aiming a rocket or grenade does not count as directly aiming at a target.
... Actually, that's already covered by the Explosives only run as well. Sorry to have bothered you.

I believe ballistic projectiles are not considered shrapnel... or maybe they are. I'm not sure what the difference is between shrapnel and fragmentation
Bullets don't explode. They shatter a lot of times, yeah, but they don't explode. Just like glass doesn't explode

So for the mine launcher because it gets so few ammo pick ups, the strategy is to use the capacity upgrade to refill it. So use the first 5, upgrade to 7 ext.

For those wondering the Rocket Launcher is technically well within the rules because the model belongs to the RPG family. Which quite literally stands for Rocket Propelled Grenade.
No it doesn’t. That’s a backronym invented to make sense of the Cyrillic acronym. The actual ancronym stands for shoulder-mounted anti-tank munition.
@@KhorneBrzrkr incorrect the original Russian term "Ruchnoy Protivotankoviy Granatomyot" stands for "Handheld Anti-tank Grenade Launcher" translated and simplified into English to keep the original acronym you get Rocket Propelled Grenade. Either way (direct translation or simplification), still contains the word grenade and is valid by the name of the challenge run.

One of my favorite games. This is what got me into Resident Evil and horror games in general. Although I prefer the more action-horror games than say ones like outlast where you have to hide and run a lot. I just prefer to be able to kill all the monsters.

it's to late to tell you, but upgrading the ammo capacity of the mine launcher refill its ammo. So you could use all ammo before upgrading it
As someone who broke their thumbs, mind and sanity trying to 100% this game on Professional... this was fucking great. RE4 was the first ever "Mature" game I ever played by myself, and I still love it to this day, and am very happy it's getting the Remaster treatment. Lemon, you do good work, now I'd like to see you beat RE5 with only Explosives.
