    I used the Tramontina bolo machete last year in Tanzania. Everything from cutting bamboo shafts to make paint roller handles to clearing a campsite to quartering a chicken to processing firewood.
    A great tool for that environment, where there was lots of woody vegetation, and the heft of the bolo was a great advantage.

    A guy wearing a Thailand t-shirt reviews a Brazilian bolo. Made me smile. I recently acquired 6 of these bolos along with a lot of Imacasa, several Incolma and four genuine new-old-stock Collins machetes. I figured my hundred or so Thai knives/machetes accumulated over 40 years might be getting lonely. This bolo is a mighty handy size/weight. The 14 inch Latin-pattern Tramontina you reviewed is also quite nice. Wholesale price of these in the U.S. is $5. to $6.

    I got the standard tramontina machete, bought the 18" one and drill a hole through the wooden handle with no metal in it for lanyard hole, been 5 years and still going strong. I'm going to buy the bolo and this review convinced me, thanks man.

    I have the same Tramontina machete and I must say out of all my expensive big knives this one get used the most. One because it is cheap and really tough, I used it to cleave pig trotters (feet) and it is great for cutting through the tough bones. With only slight roll to a little bit of the edge which can be taken out in a jiffy. I brought mine for about the same price and it comes with a pvc sheath which is quite good and functional. Also I drilled a small hole in the handle that you can thread 550 para cord and have a lanyard which is really useful. If you drill 15mm under the third rivet you will not hit the metal if you look at the machete from the butt end you can see where the tang stops. Never knew that you can eat that stage of the coconut and the coconut is the tree of life. All the best from the UK,
    great interesting channel. Love to see more catch and cook videos if you can. Also I want to ask does the vegetation grow really fast there as the soil looks really good?

    Enjoyed your vid. I'm looking for a good short-ish machete. I have a longish kukri style, maybe a Cold Steel or similar manufacturer. It's too long for me, hard to aim particularly if I'm chopping at an angle. The thing tends to twist in my hand and my strike wanders and is inaccurate. I'd like a shorter machete that would be especially good for cutting long, straight-ish vertical growing hiking stick style branches from horizontal heavier branches on trees that have partially fallen over and are alive but laying on the ground. What would you recommend in the way of a short efficient chopping machete for this particular purpose? Many thanks.

      @gabehumphries5483  Před 7 lety +2

      eqlzr2 I would say Tramontina bolo machete or Tramontina 14" machete or 12" Ontario machete. The Ontario has a thicker blade so it's less likely to wander. I find long thin blades don't chop as accurately as a shorter thicker bladed machete. Mahalo for watching

    Hey Gabe, enjoyed your video- thanks. I went to school in the Florida Keys as a kid and used to snorkel to the little islands that lay just off the coast there. Except for the bugs, I loved it there. Still love to watch bushcrafting videos in tropical locations like yours. Have you tried the Ontario SP5 Survival Bowie? It's has a 10" blade and is designed to be both a survival knife and a machete. I have an older one and absolutely love it. Happy bushwacking. -Jason

    The 14” bolo is a blade I find useful for random, general purpose light trimming around my yard. It is very light, nimble and easy to carry. I have been using my Tramontina longest. I also have a 14” bolo from Marble’s (Imacasa, who also make Condor machetes). There is not a lot to choose between them, but the Marble’s has an orange finish that makes it pretty hard to lose.

      In some countries it's illegal to consume a sprouted coconut. the logic behind that law is to keep people from killing all the baby coconut trees. Sprouted coconuts are so delicious and nutritious people would just eat them all up and not give them a chance to grow into trees. Mahalo for watching

      @gabehumphries5483  Před 7 lety +1

      BOOSTEDLASER
      Where I live there is lots of rocks so I find it hard to spend a lot of money on a large knife or big chopper blade. If you use your stuff here camping or in the yard you're going to hit a rock with your blade it happens especially using your blade to its full potential and using proper technique. For instance if I was to chop down a small tree to get the full length of this tree and for safety I'm going to have to cut it down to the ground and that induces a high risk of hitting rock here. I believe a well-made belt knife and a great machete can do everything that you want in the jungle on a camping trip or whatever situation you find yourself in. Of course on my Homestead I use a chainsaw to down large trees. So to answer your question I would say either Ontario or Tramontina for a blade over 12" now for blades I haven't used I'd go with Swamp Rat, Bark River or zombie tools. The most expensive big Chopper I own is a Bark River Grasso Bolo and it runs around $200. Mahalo for watching
