- The American version of Life On Mars annoys Ant with it's constant awful, awkward references to being set in 1973. Clips of the show are played and the irritation is spread.

Anthony: "They have 70s mustache, greased hair..."
Colin: "You're describing yourself!"

Khbbbbkhhh you better bring a fire extinguisher or sumthin
FAWKIN HOMERUN CHIPPA. THATS SOME NICE CLEAN HUMAA
"Yeah good one. Next thing ya know you'll be tellin me there's a black man in the whitehouse in the year 2008 through 2016."
ugh. I can actually picture them saying it.
Bi racial if you wanna be liberal
@@billyshead1339 Bi-racial if you wanna be technical and correct. He will never be anything other than the first black president to liberals. Anyone else will admit he is not black, he is half black. His non-black Arab family doesn't count apparently, or w.e the fuck that mouli halfbreed is.

Jimmys ability to understand Opie's terrible reading is impressive
I love opies writing flubbery "hm lets see ablebleblebleahh what? oh yeah so.. wait no.... bah bah bah.... ok:" its a collection of ticks which are rarely alone.
Jimmy losing it at the Carlin bit was beautiful!
Hahaha, 28:20. This. Show. Fucking. Stinks!!!
This is literally the premise of erock's movie
"We will have to see what current NY City Mayor John Lindsay... here in 1973... our present time... thinks about that."
Jimmy’s lightning fast response when someone brings the Diet Coke in for Colin 😂 priceless. Wish they would have done the “current day references” bit, or that they would have included it assuming they did do it.
Is this when Erock started his script?
"This case is as solid and unbreakable at the World Trade Center buildings!"
silantbill I think you mean jet fuel my good sir. Cause as we all know, it burns hot enough to melt steel beams
28:19
Jimmy - THIS SHOW FUCKING STINKS!!! 😂😂😂
Jeep began selling to the public in 1945. In fact, CJ stands for "Civilian Jeep".
Jimmy's indignant reactions to these clips are phenomenal.

10:54 one of my favourite ant lines
Once again the Brit version of a show beats the US version out of the water!
Ant is so perceptive when it comes to stuff like that
25:15 Jimmy 😂
"I've never heard of Soylent Green." I'm to cool for the room.
Woah, Jim mentioned Colin talking about Cop Show in 2008. Really cool to go back and hear little bits and pieces from when a project was in its infancy.
The original U.K. version is brilliant.
Why can't Americans just watch the British version of something? It's really weird

Why would he stay being a cop? I would become the worlds greatest stock broker real estate speculator. Everything speculator. inventor song writer gambler. I would put a hit on mark david chapman and solve all the crimes I have heard about and save the victims of the ken and barbie killers.
Exactly, I would just hang out and invest in a young Bill Gates, pick sports teams, buy real estate for dirt cheap with my money and retire in Silicon Valley... BECAUSE IT WOULD BE THE 1990'S!!!!
Seriously! After making all that money in the 70's to be rich and in my prime in the 80's would be the motherfucking shit!
TheTubeTempest yeah but you'd have to be conservative about what you do. You investing a lot of money in an unknown company and making it big will probably alter the entire market's behavior and then before you know it American Online becomes the next Google and Google gets pushed to the wayside.
Rabid Rabbit Rabbi I would be Google. I would probably turn evil.
I would definitely be the one behind the ideas of modern inventions. If you know it’s possible smarter people could work their way back
"Big A?"
"Big N!"
Opie must of just learned the phrase "Tongue in Cheek". I can just imagine him at home the night before telling himself "I can't wait to use this!" ZILCH.
I would love to bask in the perpetual stupidity of ope but I actually thought it was "tongue AND cheek".
@@920WASHBURN It's ok so did I when I first heard it when I was younger but then I was corrected. Big difference is when we learned the expression we didn't immediately run it into the ground. Believe me I tried to like Opie but its impossible at this point.
“Let’s go to caller, we haven’t taken one for a few hours...” says Opie as Ant & Jimmy are in the middle of a topical conversation. I’m glad that never happened before or again...
the original British version did give us one of the great lines in tv history of "dont move you're surrounded by armed bastards"
what if a 2017 cop went back to 2008 whooooaa
"What do you mean by 'there are only two genders?'"
"Lose your job over a tweet? Don't be stupid."
What's wrong with telling a broad she looks nice today?
theother211 or even a 2020 cop in 2017 at this point.

The Inbetweeners is another show that the US couldn't recreate.

Thanks for all the uploads, lots of stuff I've never heard
28:26 THATS where that sound byte came from lmao
ALRIGHT WE FUCKING GET IT
28:25 made me spit out my fuckin drink lol
I want to add something to what Ant says in the very beginning about how ham handed the 70s references were. Thats a real shame that they wrote it that way, because the localization team for the show did an AMAZING job decorating the streets of the 70s era. The signs. Little shops. The extras and their clothing. The parked cars. It looks authentic as hell from a visual perspective.
That show was really good for a normal network tv show. I really regret not finishing it, not that it went that far.
XBOX? You keep your Ex in a Box?
I never heard of this... I kind of want to see it now! I wish Jay Mohr was in studio for this show so he could do his Harvey Keitel impression
I think Opie lives under a rock sometimes
Soylent Green? Never heard of it..... Im only in my early 40s and even I know that reference! geez
In the states absolutely they did. In the UK, however, that isn't the case. That Jeep bit was lifted right off the UK version, in the most lazy despicable way. The first episode of the American version of the office was just American actors reading the British script. When the Americans take Britisdh shows, it's fine, but add something. Didn't they even end up on Mars at the end of this? Yuck. Make them better, not worse.
After the shitty references chased off intelligent viewers, they probably got letters saying "why arent they on mars" and ham-fisted in an ending that takes place on mars... instead of the joke being its based on the 1973 bowie single.
23:21 Colin LOL
I never watched Life on Mars. I was still upset over Journeyman being cancelled because of the writer's strike. Now that show was onto something.
Big Bang Theory has the same problem by over-explaining nerd references that real fans of those shows and comics won't say to eachother naturally. However, unlike this show, the majority of the viewing public doesn't understand those references and thus they actually need over explanation. I understand why BBT has to do that, but it still comes across as unnatural speaking and it really bugs me.
Too bad there is no visual element on this video. Clips with the audio would be HILARIOUS!
How stupid is someone to not video record this show
16:56 " nothing beats a dame" ........ except for her husband *RIM SHOT
Barney Miwwah!
Wha's wrong wit da cop shows we got? It watch pretty gooood!
How could i watch a Nickel-Odeon at home?
Who the fuck hasn't heard of Soylent Green?
Opie and jimmy
What sucks is the acting was really good on the show, but not many viewers got to see it, because they got tired of the show after the earlier hack lines written in. They didn't even need to do that, since they re-introduced the premise each episode, apparently known as a saga sell.
the gretchen Mol broad is from Rounders (1998) ...
a little bit more subtle references and maybe a plot that's subtle with the prevention of a foreseen crime. Like preventing son of Sam. Or nightingale murders
Mod was well over by 1973, Ant mate.
8:54 what are they fawkin hittn the griddy or sumtin tss tss
Colin to travis :” hows life in 1940s warsaw” fuckin lmao
I don't even think the references are to help the audience understand. The writers are trying to be funny. More cutesy shit from Hollywood.
Agreed, and thats the kind of thing rubes love. "oh ha remember that, so crazy" and then they go recommend it to all of their friends because to them that's intelligent writing.
This sounds like erocks movie
Gretchen moll is hot...she played on boardwalk empire-hbo
To be fair, when I mention I'm going to the movies, I usually say what movie I'm going to see.
My first vehicle was a 76' Jeep Grand Wagoneer. It was made in the year I was born. The incredible shit mobile was fantastic.
The idiotic thing is CJ series Jeeos were on sale since the 50's, and Jeepster wagons from 60 or so. Wagoneers were great terrible cars, lol
There were no Jeeos on sale. Ever.
damn, has anybody brought that up on the show because that's spot on
This was just a couple of weeks before Ant lost his mind forever.
Opie contributed nothing and went to the phones
What do you mean? This is a 48 minute video. He guzzed inside your girl like 12 times in the duration of this video.
Gretchen Mol frustrates me.
The original British version is pretty good and wasn't anywhere near as cringey with the references
28:17 🤣
It makes a lot more sense if you assume that it's written for people who were young adults 35 years ago.
The exaggerated acting, overly repetitive themes and obvious writing make sense if it's meant to be presented to people in their 60's
I like that the comment right under yours, is about how good the acting was. Lol
For people coming across this clip. Go watch The Deuce from the guys that made the Wire. Show about 70s and 80s new York focused on the start of the sex industry. It's tremendous.
They even try to slip in a David Bowie song in the background of the scene where the cop overreacts about the jeep comment. It's a direct reference to Bowie's song, "Life on Mars?". You know, the title of the fucking show...... ugh.
25:15 WHAT IS THAT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Shithead has nothing to add to the show as usual so of course "let's take a quick call".
There's a way to do what this show tried (and failed) to do because people really do reference the time they're living in. "I saw it on Netflix..." or "I was on Twitter yesterday..." are pretty common kinds of statements, but to someone from the future watching a show set in this time, they might seem just as ham-handed and out of context. These days, you can't go five minutes without someone making a reference to something that just happened.
No, your examples would be fine. The way Life on Mars would handle those lines would be: "I saw this video on the video hosting site CZcams. Boy do I love that PewDiePie!"
or
Guy: "Hey Mike, did you follow me on Twitter yet?
Mike: "Twitter? You mean that new social network site?"
Guy: "Yeah, I got some good stuff you should retweet!"
Homer: Hey, Moe! You wanna come with me and Wally to the Superbowl!?
Moe: Oh absolutely, my favorite team's in it! The ... Atlanta Falcons ... Yeah, ever since I was a boy I've always loved the ... Atlanta Falcons ...
Homer: Yeah, they're good, but I wouldn't cut out the ... Denver Broncos ...
Wally: Yeah... I hear that President ... Clinton ... Is going to be watching with his wife ... Hillary ...
1973 yikes, imagine all of that wild bush he has to navigate thru b4 nailin a chick hahahaha
kinda sounds like Erock's sci-fi thriller drama rom-com horse shit
Newsflash - the USA remakes a UK show and fucks it by putting in better-looking actors, dumbing down the script and inserting more advertising breaks.
Jimmy giving acting/delivery advice is like Opie dissecting somebody's bad Stand Up comedy gig and bringing up ways that it could be funnier. He may be right but judging by his own horrendous acting performances he is probably not the best person to be talking with such authority on the matter. I don't think I have ever seen Jim Norton deliver a line well in anything he has ever been in.
Can't remember the Patti refrence from goofellas...
Stalker Patti is a character of radio show, Colin just wanted Ant to do her impression but as if she was a character in the movie
WTF?! THis is gold, but why does Colin Quinn sound like he's in the hallway whispering? Is he always this semi mute on the show?! I have to crank my speakers to hear that Irish git chime in wtf LOL
His face is in Jimmy's lap
28:20 THIS...SHOW...FUCKING STINKS! Jimmy's so angry he barely let the clip finish.
Ha their hating on Poughkeepsie! lol
29:12 to be fair, parts in The Wire did do some shoehorning of places in Baltimore, especially the pilot episode.
so Ant's psycho ex was from Akron huh?
I owned a Jeep (WJ), and I definitely referred to it as my "Jeep" because it's really wasn't a car or a truck.
british version is better by far.
There are lots of movies and TV shows guilty of this. It ruins the whole experience.
my favorite use of it was LA Noire. It happened once and it was just "next you'll be calling Nixon a crook" which is definitely bad because of how obvious it is, but at least there its used about as properly as you can be... with the idea that you're accusing someone who is crooked, but his status and reputation lead everyone to trust him, sort of like Nixon in the 40s. either way, it always takes you out of the experience.
Most tv is horribly written. Go watch the deuce for well written show about 70s and 80s new York.
13:58
Opie really adds to the show with those phone calls.
Oh and there are aliens at Roswell and 911 was an inside job.
Oof the george Carlin one was really fucking bad. Who wrote that line and who approved it? That was so horribly cringe
Alright, the lines never got that bad and they did a lot less of referencing the '70s after the first few episodes. Problem is, they lost most of their audience by then and got cancelled. At least they got to do a proper ending.
I kinda have to disagree with some of the points here. The amount of times I say something about technology and someone says “it is 2020” is hard to count. People definitely reference the year they’re in.
The show concept sounds cool, good cast, guess it fucking sucked though.
Keitel and Imperioli are great actors, IF they have a good script with good writers.
Just came across this ... these guys (Anthony and Norton) were actually pretty funny at one point! They have an obvious chemistry ... when I hear the show now, things only seem to click every now and then. They are both obviously not over-talented, and should have just stuck to what works. They seem to pull back a bit now these days.
oh...wow...Am I the only one who spots the irony? You say that you don't like the "spoon feeding" in the show - but you have been rambling on for 26min (stopped listening after that...) how you hate all the references to the 70's...just saying...If you don't like the US version, watch the UK one! I know you said you wouldn't get the British 70's references. BUT as someone who doesn't live in the USA or in the UK and far too young to know anything about the 70's I LOVE the original show!
Are you "just saying"?
So 2014 of you.
Wow, what a non-point. The Big Bang Theory has awkward geeky references, because it is a sitcom (situation COMEDY) about awkward geeky people. Life on Mars is a sci-fi drama. How obsessed do you need to be with BBT to show horn in that comparison?
Jimmy dominated in this shit 😂
28:28
