Christy Huff, M.D. is a cardiologist and medical director of Benzodiazepine Information Coalition (aka BIC), a nonprofit that educates about the adverse effects of prescribed benzodiazepines.
In addition to her work at BIC, Dr. Huff is a member of the Colorado Consortium for Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention’s Benzodiazepine Action Work Group.
Dr. Huff speaks and writes frequently about her lived experience with benzodiazepines. Her personal experience with protracted benzodiazepine withdrawal led her to realize the serious risks of these medications and the knowledge gaps in the medical community surrounding benzodiazepines. Dr. Huff specifically advocates for better education of physicians regarding the adverse effects of benzodiazepines and how to safely taper patients off these medications. Her research interests include patient-centered benzodiazepine deprescribing and benzodiazepine-induced neurological dysfunction (BIND).

10years on, cold turkey taper 6years off the klonopin been through all sorts of therapy, no one around here understands the tapering process. I am hopeless and it destroyed my beautiful life. I was put on it for sleep and anxiety and they both are way worse, and I never had agoraphobia before the meds and I deal with it everyday. I am suffering more than I ever knew was possible. Help!
I want help too but the only doctors who even believe in withdrawl, are so expensive for us to even be able to afford them. There is no help. A lot of times I see these videos where people like her claim they are healed and they are not, so its hopeless. They either come on here and say how they e been protracted for 10 15 years and the still suffer neurological problems. How is that healing?
@@madelynhernandez7453People heal. Only 10-20% of benzo users have severe protracted withdrawals and those are mainly the ones that are went off the meds cold Turkey. A very slow taper is the way to go. Also once off the meds minerals and vitamins deficiency are a lot of the reasons people have symptoms. Diet and exercise can also assist in the healing process. And don’t forget lean on God and ask for his help! I hope you recover soon!
High dose vit c-then get fats in your system-coconut oil and look into keto-saturated animal fats are key-the brain is made from fat-cholesterol is the healer-also b1(thiamine) and b complex-sauna-hot /cold ‘therapy’ helps-stimulate your nerves-with a shower head!!! @@JM-kq7rn things that helped me with that are magnesium, taurine, L theanine and choline supplements. I would try to eat as cleaning as possible as well. I pray for a breakthrough for you and wish you a fast recovery!
You should look into antipsychotic withdrawal (acute and protracted). There's hardly any research compared to benzos or antidepressants. If you think nobody listens to benzo victims, imagine what happens to those coming off of antipsychotics who people believe they must be really "crazy".

There's definitely some need to adress the problems with neuroleptics.
But they are psychiatry's holy cow... so most people don't want to touch the issue. The next problem is narcissism, once you are on neuroleptics, you're considered crazy, and the channel is called medicating "normal", not mentally burdened aka crazy people who deteriorate even more under the influence of psych drugs, who are not told about the side effects and withdrawal problems, or offered alternative treatments.
We're collectively dodging the issue and I don't think this channel has the balls to adress this.
I hope, they prove me wrong, though.
Antipsychotics are definitely not designed for the benefit of the patient

I was only 15 and a "difficult teen" when they pushed neuroleptics on me and sealed my fate. They did not tell me how these pills destroy the brain, body and cause addition. Instead they downplayed any concerns. My wish is there should be lawsuits filed against such practioners because there could be other innocent victims of these practicioners.

I was suffering with BIND when on the drug,now I'm tapering at my Gps insistance that I do so after 32 yrs of being on this chemical. I could never understand what was wrong with me,and was constanly at the Drs ,then sent to see numerous specialists,who never put 2x2 together that it was the benzo.Your channel Medicating Normal ,Benzo Coalition Groups ,etc ! are my lifeline and educating myself on my ill health for all these years.You are all my hero's for all the work and helping us the public understand these drugs and what their effects are on the body and brain.
they never think anything is drug related, its woefully inadequate, I have just had months of absolutely awful mysterious symptoms, and they tie in exactly with my tapering down. I kept thinking ..is this the Benzo causing this ? they never put 2 x 2 together, even a specialist, but I am now convinced it is indeed ALL caused by the Benzo. Even if I told my Dr, it is the benzo, I do not think for a minute the Dr would believe me, or have any understanding of Benzo withdrawal consequences. They keep offering me more drugs for the symptoms . I will not take them.
I did Not abuse the prescription. I took as directed. Just finished physically tapering. Yes, still have symptoms.

Couple weeks ago I realized - 40 years of Poly Psychiatric Chemical Abuse - over medicated, mis medicated, left in restraints in ER hallways,
locked away in 'hospitals' - not for 20 years. Also been on Disability. I'm 60. So are Benzos. The first psych chemical I was told to, ".. take this.." inpatient, of course- NO Informed Consent-, was Librium, the first benzo. As someone stuck on SSRIs because of withdrawal, I applaud this channel's efforts to spread knowledge of these kind of issues with psychoactive meds that have been so normalized in the medical community as not causing dependency issues in people. All this is real in some people, even if the majority of folks don't deal with it.
I would argue majority of folks on these drugs do have issues but they do not attribute them to the drugs. Doctors do not recognize drug harm. They are guessing with the symptoms and misdiagnose to only issue more drugs.

I have headaches everyday for no reason, Erectile problems, Mood problems, and mostly the headaches/head pressure is the worst part!

I have had years of chronic symptoms - look into TMS - it does not only apply to pain. I am tapering Benzo;s after 10 + yrs plus on, and am on an SSRI which I want to get off at some stage too. I wonder - and I am not saying I am right, but I wonder if tapering off and being on Benzo''s creates an hypersensitive hypervigilent nervous system which spits out tons of random symptoms that we place too much meaning to, just as all my various symptoms of TMS have. The more u freak out the more your brain creates symptoms. I have no idea how I will be when, or if, I get off Benzo's but I have to use TMS work to cope with any side effects or symptoms, and I know that the brain has the most amazing ability to heal itself . I choose not to think I will have "protracted" symptoms/syndrome or get into the horror stories of having "damage" to my CNS. . It just makes the whole fear thing exacerbated which will make it all 10 x worse. That is not to say the symptoms are not real - they are real - but how to deal with them best ? TMS work is my only hope and may help others: Neuro Science,. Mind Body. TMS . loads YT videos on it. Its the only option as far as I can see. the medical system has no options for us to heal or feel better.

TMS is not an FDA-approved treatment for benzodiazepine withdrawal. People should be aware of this fact for full informed consent.

I was unsble to complete the voice story. I have a Dr trying to findcsomthing to help me sleep. Just prescribed Linesta, nightmare !!! How can I get sleep. The 2 years 3 hours sleep a night has given me sleep deprivation deprivation

I wanted to ask Dr Huff if she feels it's safe to have surgery during a taper. I need to have my breast implants removed and I know she also had breast surgery. Would you be willing to comment on this? Kind of a serious situation. Thank you!
It is as with anything while suffering from dysfunction to the nervous system from a psychotropic drug of any kind - everyone is different. We've met people who did just fine and had no issues, and we've met people who had a setback from something they were given during the surgery. Most people try to see if they can avoid benzos altogether in the surgery, but that is up to the anesthesiologist, so you must consult w/ them ahead of time. Overall, many people avoid elective meds and procedures until they feel better and stronger and only do the ones that are absolutely necessary until they are better. You have to determine for yourself what is the best course for your own situation.
I had a mastectomy with propofol anesthesia but no pain meds after. All nerves in breast gone or cut so not much pain at all until healing and nerve regeneration.

So still dealing with this every day severely 14 months after you were taken of klonopin abruptly after 12 taking it as (prescribed by your fucked up psychiatrist)years means what? I’m house bound. I have no life, my brain feels like I have a massive growth or tumor 24/7 non stop.

Start ketogenic diet-high dose vit c to detox and stop withdrawal-coconut oil on neck and in hot water everyday-up fats-to rebuild the brain -get b complex-look into it-especially b1-thiamine-heal you-you can do it xx coconut oil oil on skin down spine everyday
Can you take a benzo for a few weeks to help you get off opiods? Or will you then have to taper ?
Most people can, but the FDA showed cases where it happened in as short as a week. So, proceed w caution. They’re best used intermittently
@@MedicatingNormal thank you for the quick response. I was once in the hospital dealing with botched surgery for 3 weeks iv valium and ativan . Round the clock . I asked if i would have withdrawal, they said no. The weird thing is i didn't have any withdrawal. I was released on opioids though. I wonder now if opioids help benzo withdrawal?

… because at some point it’s not withdrawal it’s damage. The lie is that these brain cells change back. They have to rewire with what is left. I know many people that had their akathisia come back after being gone for years. Even if you feel better, the line between “healed” and not healed is thinner than it looks. I resent people getting mad for calling my symptoms permanent. I’ve been battling akathisia and dystonia on some level for decades. I do believe those hurt the worst have underlying auto immune damage/issues making them prone to more injury. I also believe non-neurotypical people are prone to more injury. I believe sickness & fever & antibiotics in childhood (PANS/PANDAS) caused an overreaction reaction and my immune system to attack my brain. The damage it left pushed me to try and treat it with medications and I got hurt even more. That’s my theory anyway.
You need to get a lumbar puncture done to check for encephalytis. You are on the right track. I believe that benzos cause auto immune disease in many people and I too fully believe that those damaged are suffering from autoimmunity in the brain and CNS in the form of limbic encephalytis. We should connect to talk about this further as I am working with a neurologist to see what happened to me. I took .5 mg of xanax for sleeping (138 tablets within 12 months) and then a one year taper of valium from 10 mg to zero and I have been destroyed. I was an extremely healthy, very active individual before this disaster. It is absolutely shocking to me that there are tens of millions of people on the planet that have been effectively destroyed by this drug class and no one even talks about it. It is the largest medical disaster in the history of mankind.@@kevk741

it's much less likely - although there are rare folks who get it after just 7-10 days
I did it for 10 days and am still having problems 2 years later.

I don't even remember writing that comment (for the best, perhaps!) and feel mostly back to normal (had brain zaps and other weirdness on the reg for a couple of months after tapering off over one month). Not sure if I truly had akathisia, but somehow I ended up watching a bunch of these videos during that time period and found them relatable.
