Just wanted to add that the drain opening is angled toward the driver's side door, so when you pull the plug it shoots out out at almost a 45 degree angle, so don't just place a small oil catcher just directly below the drain, or you will have a mess to clean up
Thank you so much! We thought we knew what we were doing, but watching your video reaffirmed the correct steps.
I like to do my changes after the car has been sitting for 1 hour after a drive. Before I even remove the oil drain bolt, I like to start topside by removing the oil dipstick, cracking loose the oil fill cap, and cracking loose the oil filter by 1/4 turn - just so I know in my mind that I'll actually be able to remove it. After this topside prep, I then proceed underneath and drain the oil. As for the oil filter, once the gasket makes contact with the tray after spinning it on, I give it 3/4 turn and that's it.
Thanks for a nice helpful video. Certainly seems like a straightforward exercise. Look forward to seeing more DIY maintenance videos on this 2019 Subaru Crosstrek.
Thanks for stopping by! I'm sure there will be more to come, my wife and I tend to drive quite a bit each year for work.
Straightforward and thorough, thanks!
Nice Job Mark, not only did you do a good job and gave the viewer the exact view from the manual to be successful; you made it very easy! Seven dislikes, what can you possibly dislike about the clip, the oil?
I truly appreciate the education, I have same make and model
wish other auto companies took notes on how to design oil changes. very simple. love the top engine oil filters.
Thank you, time for daughter's oil change, now that we are past all recalls. I always use the level gauge oil extractor, saves me from getting down under and dirty. Some say bad residue at bottom stays, but I give it a good 5min rev up before suctioning out and so far my German cars have survived 15 years with this method.
I've considered buying an extractor, seems like a good way to perform maintenance; I think long as you are changing it regularly whatever accumulation at the bottom is probably negligible.
Thanks for the links!
I'm in Sydney, Australia & I just bought a 2019 Subaru Impreza for my wife. It has done 2500kms & I decided to change the oil & oil filter as it is a new engine. Firstly, Subaru said it DID NOT need oil change until 12,400kms. I think this is insane as I change oil when it is dirty, generally every 4000kms. Maybe it is overkill, but I know engines perform better when kept clean. Anyway, the amount of force I needed to remove the oil filter & the sump bolt was ridiculous. I am so glad I changed it rather than wait as it would have not been easy to remove. I used an Australian oil Penrite HPR 0-30w & a quality oil filter. The difference at cold start was instantly better. Fast flow and much quieter than when new. Keeping in mind the first oil batch was filthy black at 2500kms, I strongly suggest changing your Subaru oil at much smaller intervals as the engines have tight tolerances and appear to use a average oil from factory. Definitely supply your own oil & filter if you use a mechanic. I would not go to a Subaru dealer for 'service' only for repair under warranty. Just my two cents, I amnot an employee, just a DIY mechanic who does most of his own work on the household cars. Great video, keep em coming.
Thanks for stopping by! It's definitely a great idea to change the oil early on any brand new car; I was surprised how tight everything was on this car. My wife has driven 12k miles so far and recently noticed burn in on her head unit, have you experienced this yet? Seems like they are susceptible and need a screensaver or something.
yes insane, I mean what would all those Engineers at Subaru know anyway?
tight tolerance and average oil (whatever that means) ?? seriously where do you get this BS from? its quite a mental cinema you have running there
@@yarpos He is saying there is permanent damage on the touchscreen due to the lack of a "screensaver."
thanks for the tips!
Thanks for the video
Did I miss something??? What were you tapping after you put on the new filter??
Great video, thanks
Great video
Thanks for the info time for the first one! My wife took hers in for an electronic issue and they got pissed because she wouldn't let them change the oil! Next time I will be taking it in! Lol
omg, that’s infuriating. Ridiculous what women have to put up with when talking a vehicle for service. Keep having her back 👊🏻
Thank YOU
Thanks for the video mate 😊😊
Thank you! 😅tired of paying for oil changes
nice, I have the same year! it's a great car btw, however my next vehicle will probably be an Outback :)
The first thing I did to my Crosstrek was to change the oil drainer plug to a Fumoto F108S drain valve.
It makes oil changes much easier ($29.95).
Do NOT do this if you are gonna go off roading.
PS: Mark, you did an excellent choice of oil/filter brand, good job bud 👊🏻👍🏻
Great video! Suggestion... Clean the oil filter tray before removing the oil filter. I wont open the oil filter debate.... but stock will always be better.
Fill up oil to top line every chance, some amount needs to go to the filter, so in that case check level after few minutes engine running when oil start cycling
Filling to the top isn't going to hurt anything, I aim for the middle that way I can top off later if needed.
Hey how do I reset the oil light on the car. I can’t seem to find any videos or even figure out how through the owners manual.
What size wrench to get the drain unplugged?
Thanks for the vid! info on the lift please thanks
Bendpak HD-9 with 220v, probably should have gotten the two post but the storage is nice.
how many miles had it before the change?
Doesn't it consumes quite a bit of engine oil?
Shouldn’t you put some oil in the filter before putting it on?
Thanks so much for the tutorial! I wasn’t sure how to deal with an oil filter that’s mounted on the top of the engine like this one.
What size crush washer for the oil drain plug? 17mm? 16mm?
Can I drive past the service due date without resetting the kilometre or the due date for a few more days or kilometre?
OR I have to reset the date/kilometre in order to continue to drive?
Do you have to put a new crush washer on everytime? On my 09 impreza i reused the same washer for years tbh
Listo ya está gracias
My 2024 has a lifetime warranty, but you have to go to the dealer for oil changes or it’s void of the warranty.
The oil level was bout 3/4 inch above full line both times they said it was ok. I do my own now per the owners manual
I don't think they caused any damage but I can definitely see the annoyance with their lack of attention to detail.
@@MarkMethods So the third time it was change I did it at 5,000 miles and measured the amount that drained out, it was 4.3 quarts maybe thats why they over filling it. From now on I will be doing my own changes and 4.7 qts will be going in.
Nice video. Does it matter which way the washer goes?
Thanks! I don't think it matters because of the crush but I usually aim the smooth side at the bolt head.
I’m confused as to why he hammered on the filter after tightening it.
K tanto con sumio de aseite cuando le isiste el canbio
how would i know when to change certain things like the brake fluid, oli, oil filter etc?
Watch out on aftermarket filters with bypass pressure being different than stock! The blue filter apparently only sold in the US is a lower quality I have heard from some youtube videos. The black Subaru Filter from Japan is best from Tokyo Roki.
Interesting! Loved to see someone dissect each color to compare... Maybe I'll try and source them.
Mark Methods czcams.com/video/Cm5hKTYTtSU/video.html new video by MrSubaru1387 is the answer👌 Because the Oil filter is upside down so cannot be pre filled there is an Oil pressure priming procedure shown. And the filters pulled apart.
Hi will I be better off with a used Subaru XV or used Porsche Cayenne base, both SUV 2015 will I be better of with Porsche please let me know? Thank you
Depends on your needs, personally I believe the Crosstrek will be cheaper, more reliable, and only need regular fuel reducing operating costs as well. The Porsche would be nice but from the overall cost of ownership perspective, I couldn't recommend it for a daily driver.
I too have a 2019 Crosstrek. When I bought it they gave me free oil change for life as long as I took it back to them in Roanoke Va. The first time change they had down 6qt on work order??? So I asked they gave me bull shit The second time I had them change same thing 6 qt but the owners manual says 4.7 I raised hell with them even the Subaru corp called me Have you or does anybody else came across this issue with any other dealers. There response was the cavity holds 6 qts.
Interesting, *puts on tin foil hat* I have never run a shop but it almost sounds like they're using that to cook their books maybe for taxes or to launder money. *takes off hat* But I could be wrong, I don't have enough information to make that determination. I haven't heard of dealers doing this, Subaru of America said that was the reason or the dealer did? Sounds like they were trying to get you off the phone.
I have never trusted free oil changes, growing up my friend picked up a 350z and was given free oil changes. He picked his car up from one and he noticed after driving a bit the engine didn't sound good. Checked the dipstick, dry. He got oil to keep it from seizing and the dealer said sorry. Eventually many hard miles down the road he spun a bearing. I think this single event eventually caused premature failure.
which is the correct position of the crush washer? up? down? how do you tell?
Flat side to the bolt as its flat too and the drain pan is not perfectly flat.
what were the two adjustments you made to the oil filter after hand tightening it in? it looked like an oil filter attachment for tightening it and then something to hammer it in. what was the equipment and what was the purpose of it?
Those were supposed to be shots of me struggling to remove the filter; just get the clamp style oil filter wrench otherwise you may have a tough time.
@@MarkMethods just changed the oil on my crosstrek for the first time (both ever and on the 'trek). thanks so much for your helpful video! you're like the father i never had XD
I've heard the filter draws in a certain amount of oil (it saturates) and that you should compensate for that... i've seen some guys fill the filter with oil before applying the filter. What are your thoughts?
I'm not an expert but I think it's not possible in this case, because the filter is on top of the engine and not underneath. Therefore, the oil used to fill the filter will spill. Some cars have the oil filter close by from where you drain the oil, under the car and in those cases it's possible to prefill the filter.
Do you replace the crush washer at every oil change?
Yes, you might be able to use it more than once but I don't think it's worth the risk.
Why did you hammer the filter and change washer
I was showing my failed attempts to remove the filter, the oil wrench ended up working. The factory filter was tightened by someone with a vendetta.
I have a 2020 Subaru Crosstrek and the oil filter type is coming out as Mobil M1-108a instead of M1-110a is there any difference between the 108 and 110? I checked the sizes and the 110 seems slightly bigger than the 108.
Check my Instagram, I have a comparison of the filters; the 110 is closer in size to OEM than the 108.
i cant find any info saying that the mobil1 filter fits. Are you sure that the filter fits fine.
M1-110A filter worked on my Crosstrek, I've found forum posts going back to 2015 utilizing the same filter. When I search Mobil1's site though I do see M1-108A being recommended. I'm guessing there is a slight length difference, I don't think there will be any harm using either.
Question If you’re putting it on hand tight why are you talking the oil filter and hammering it on???
It was some shots of me struggling to remove the oil filter because of how tightly the factory set it; not supposed to be instructions.
i did the first oil change for my son wrx 2017 @6.25k miles when i remove the drain plug oil spill on floor it evaporate quickly not like any 5w30 ,the oil from subaru manufacture is not the same as dealer , his car now @58k miles nerver burn any oil. Subaru owner do not change it before 5k miles there some benefit from the manufacture oil .
I've recently bought a '20 Crosstrek and am approaching the old school 3k oil change parameters. Is it a fair idea to change oil now or can I wait until 5k as it seems most newer vehicles are inclined towards?
Normally I would go with the manufacturer recommendations however I do understand the desire for an early oil change on the first one. I would do whatever you feel is best, at worst you spend a little extra money on an early oil change for peace of mind.
Mobile website 110A doesn't show its the right filter. Is it the right filter?
Strange, seems they must have changed the suggestion; I see M1-108A showing up now in their catalog; the 110A fits it's just a little taller. Looks like I'll need to update my description, thanks!
do these have a reset oil timer button
My wife’s 2018 crosstrek has a difficult navigation into the reminder of a maintenance schedule. Finally was able to find it and get the first reminder yesterday
I use a MityVac Oil Evacuator for the crosstrek and Outback
Why did you say to hand tighten the filter and then you cut to tightening it with a tool and hitting it with a hammer with no explanation?
I was showing why you shouldn't tighten more than hand tight, these came incredibly tight from the factory and I needed an oil filter wrench to remove it.
@@MarkMethods if you tighten an oil filter by hand you will find that months later you probably wont get it off by hand. Thats normal
I put the full 5 U.S quarts = 4.73 liters in. I imagine that's alright to do.
How many miles from brand new till you did the first oil change?
First maintenance is 7.5-10k miles with full synthetic, I did mine at 10k but it doesn't hurt to do it earlier for peace of mind.
I change out the original filter, but not the oil, at 500 miles or less on any NEW car. Who knows what abrasive stuff from the manufacture process is in there and there is also some powdered steel thrown off by the break-in as well. But the oils is far from needing changing at that point.
Wish Toyota was this simple to change oil 😭
Is the oil drain plug in the same location as a 2019 Impreza CVT?
I believe the Impreza has a different motor in it if I recall correctly, it should be on the black oil pan bulge near the oil filter.
Both the Crosstrek and the Impreza have the same 2.0 L direct injected boxer FB20D engine. Crosstrek is basically a lifted Impreza with a few other minor tweaks.
Any updates on your oil consumption?
I started using a high mileage synthetic at 80k, seems the consumption has slowed significantly; mobil1 extended performance high mileage 0-20. I have been using the full 5 quart bottle each time and the dipstick is a hair over full but when I go to drain it's barely below the top line.
I never understood why they still do oil filter all smooth and round! They are drive me nuts. Having a hex head, nobody thought after all those years???
5:54 What were you doing there?!
There are 2 different Subaru oil filters. The black one that ships on the car from the factory is extremely high quality, but are only in Japan. The Subaru filters in America are blue and are very cheaply made. A lot of Subaru people will import the Japanese filters for this reason.
@Mark Methods, why did you "hammer"/tap the oil filter after you put the new one in and tightened it? Is there a reason for that?
These were failed attempts at removing the filter from how hard the factory had attached it.
Buy the black Subaru filters from ebay. Made in Japan not in fram land
Just hand tighten the oil filter people
The BLUE Subaru filters are made my fram, garbage…the BLACK filters for the wrx and from the factory are made by Tokyo roki, good filters. You can get them online from Europe if ya really wanted to but yes avoid the blue at all cost
I have a question and I hope someone could help me out. I just did an oil change on my subaru crosstrek. Obviously needs the same 4.7q. Drained all the oil did everything that needed be done. When I went to put the new oil in I accidentally spilled a considerable amount. So there's definitely less than 4.7q in the engine. But when I read the dipstick it shows way more oil than mathematically possible. (Yes I wiped off the stick before checking). Can anyone figure out why this may be the case?
When you empty oil some is left behind which could account for the discrepancy, also the level of the ground can play a large role in skewing results.
Did you try running the car for about 10 mins and waiting 10 mins to check it after?
They put that filter on tight, because they don't want you changing the oil.
It's tight to stop you from doing it.
The fact that torque specs are a thing and nobody does anything besides uses an impact gun to put shit on is infuriating
good going ,kind of painful to watch...did wife(lol) 2023 @ 3000...guessing you went the 6000
Now they use water as oil
@@MarkMethods True. But for high speeds that 20W is very thin.
I use 5W/30, and in the summers I drive in Germany. I don't think my car could handle such a thin oil for high speeds.
While this is under warranty I'll be using their recommended weight, my general rule of thumb is to do whatever the manufacturer says. I think you'd be fine even in the summer, manufacturers wouldn't steer you in the wrong direction typically. I'd have to verify in the manual but some vehicle's I've had previously do recommend for warmer regions to increase the weight, unsure about this Crosstrek though.
@@MarkMethods That is definitely also the right choice to do. My car states to use 5W/30, so that's what I use.
I am just surprised that many manufactures go with such thin oil. I think it is due to emissions regulations
For sure, there is a slight bump in fuel economy; I'm not sure it's worth the wear though.
You have to start the car before filling the last quart because the filter uses up some oil. Then add last quart and check fill line! Who taught you to change oil?
The filter absorbs a negligible amount of oil. Only start a vehicle with the initially correct amount of oil, top off after the first start and run. This isn't rocket appliances.
The Japanese filter is better. Tokyo Roki
No answer yet about the tapping??
Am I missing the obvious???
Maybe your channel is off ?? That’s ok .
Peace my friend.
The tapping on the oil filter was due to how tight the factory had set the filter. I was showing my failures until I got to the oil wrench.
I have a 2019 as well. I just went to change the oil but decided I better watch a video first in case there is something I'm missing. Sure enough, I don't have any crush washers. :)
