Atari 2600 Turmoil from 20th Century Fox | The BEST Tempest Experience You Can Get on the VCS!

- You no doubt know the story of how Yars' Revenge came about when Howard Scott Warshaw was assigned to port Star Castle to the Atari VCS. The system just wasn't quite capable, but with a little re-design, a new and now classic game was born.
I don't know for a fact that similar evolution took place on the way to my pick for this video, but for all the world it feels like a clever re-interpretation of Atari's Tempest.
So, let's get to 20th Century Fox's Turmoil!

it's amazing how much speed can come out of the Atari 2600 .
It's a great game! I think it's one of those that when you watch someone ELSE play it, it looks impossible, ha. When you actually play it though, while it is super challenging, it's a bit easier than it looks from just watching. It's also a game that I find absolutely works best with a classic CX40 style joystick vs. a modern controller / gamepad. Great video! I'm going to go play a little Turmoil right now!
Go do it! 😁
This has gotta be one of my top ten Atari games of all time. Its fast passed, fun, and a plethora of great 2600 sounds.
I don't have the manual, therefore I didn't know there was a pause. Doubt I'll use it, but good to know. I love the features on lesser known games. Thanks, Jon
Activision’s Beamrider is kind of like Tempest on a flat plane (but still zoomy-inny)! Looks a bit simplistic at first but the new enemy types just keep coming sector after sector, each with its own look and behaviour. One of my favourites back then!
And Juno First is like a funner version of Beamrider!
That looks like a technical marvel for the time and platform. So many games back then were slow and only allowed a few bullets on screen at a time. Amazing!
I've been playing this game since I was a teenager, but I didn't roll the score until I was in my 50s. Great game!
This game is so underrated and easily one of the best games on the Atari 2600, definitely a top shooter. I didn't have this as a kid, but sure wish I did. It's now a favorite. Intended or not, Mark Turmell essentially programmed a linear Tempest. On the Turmoil demo screen, there's a "Sneaker" at the bottom. This a nod to Mark's other 2600 titile, Fast Eddie.
I loved this game as a kid. It sounded awesome and I would blast the old Magnavox wooden TV. My mom wills yell at me to turn it down. The start of the game was the best part.
This game was such a delight for me to discover in later years, decades after it was new; I only remember seeing print ads for it back in the day and not thinking much of it. Nowadays I've got the cartridge in regular rotation with my other favorites.
Turmoil is one of my favorite games. I like the fast action and the ability to score lots of points.
This has always been on my personal top 5 since its release, but no one ever talks about it, or even know about it.
I had a weird situation, the first game system we got in out house was an NES. I didn’t get an Atari until much later and it was a 7800 that had belonged to a friend. I loved it though because it was the first console we had in the house that was entirely mine. He even gave me ET with it so I did play that odd game. Thinking I might get a 2600+ to relive those days.
I do like seeing the games that I did not have the opportunity to play. That’s why I am here.
They said it couldn’t be done, but we did crossbreed Frogger with Space Invaders…
I'm really enjoying these "hidden gems" from the Atari 2600. I really appreciate your reviews on these great games.
This is one of my favorite games. I got to chat with Mark Turmell at a convention several years ago and had him sign my boxed copy. Nice guy!
Speaking of odd shooters, I also am a fan of Beany Bopper. Such a weird game, but it's worth a look.
Included in my full 20th Century Fox ranking vid. Check it out. 😁
This game epitomizes a pure arcade experience. Play as long as you can and for the highest score. But we played it at home and had infinite quarters - how lucky were we in 1983? Love this game and I revisit it several times a year. And yeah, I still can't make it past stage 6. Top shelf vid, Jon. Thanks for carrying the torch!
I didn't have a large atari library when I was a kid but this was one of the favorites that I did have. After I got my jaguar and tempest 2000 it occurred to me that turmoil was a lot like tempest.
What an unexpectedly fun game!!
Games such as Turmoil and Sneakers gave us a glimpse of Mark Turmell's mindset. He would later be involved in the design of twin stick shooters such as Smash TV and Total Carnage and then over the top sports entertainment games such as NBA Jam. A shame he doesn't have a Wikipedia page despite his reknown.
I’ve never played it that far before. That intense!
Favorite 2600 game of all time!!!
I never played Turmoil but it looks challenging. As far as Tempest goes, I was too intimidated to ever put a quarter into it. At just 9 or 10 years old, it seemed like a game for the hardened teenage arcade warrior!
Fantastic video as always brother! LOVE your Atari content so very much! Btw great podcast too! Thank you so much! Always excited to see new VCS content!
I think I would put this one up there with Solar Fox, a challenging but fun game to play hours on end.
I agree. Great game design. It's amazing what could be done if you understood that you could actually have as many sprites as you wanted on the screen, so long as you didn't break the rules on how many could be on any one line.
One of the really cool things about Atari games like this are the sprites. Intellivision was more powerful but didn't seem to have the same sprite capabilities (look back at games like Frogger). This game really shows off some really nice enemy graphics and it certainly had fast arcade action. That said, I was never a huge fan of the game because of the limited movement of the main character but I think I need to give it a chance after watching your video.
I missed this one. I'll have to check it out
I was thinking of trying this since your tier review but now I definitely need to try this. It could get a place of honor on my 50th Anniversary Flashback
Agreed Jon, it is a great Tempest alike, even down to the name. Mark Turmell also programmed the underrated Gas Hog, check it out! It's one of my favourites.
You have good taste. Love Gas Hog!
Great game design and yes, very Tempestesque with some underlying Centipede vibes, especially the sound design and spiders. If Jeff Minter had programmed for the 2600, this wouldn't be a million miles away :-) Keep up the awesome work Jon!
Superb game I got to find this... next level screen and sound is so cool!
The lines disappearing reminds me of certain levels of Pickaxe Pete on the Phillips G7000; which is one of my fave games.
Great Channel! I enjoy all of your 2600 content and I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos.
Got this one from my uncle when I was a kid. I have always liked it, but it has never made me think of Tempest.
One of my top 5! Jawbreaker and Taz have a similar vibe.
Tempest in my favorite arcade game, and I love Turmoil. I never played that one as a kid, but I did have The Challenge of Nexar and that one always scratched my Tempest itch.
Very entertaining and fun to watch. Thanks for posting this.
I haven't tried Turmoil, but it looks interesting. I'll fire it up on my MAME machine (built with 19" CRT RGB arcade monitor & classic Wico leaf-switch controls). I don't really see too much resemblance to Tempest though. I own an original Tempest arcade machine.
I was hugely disappointed in Atari's decision to make Yar's Revenge instead of Star Castle. Star Castle was (and still is) one of my favorite arcade machines. I did get the Vectrex version around 1984 when they were on close-out and it's an excellent port. I still have my Vectrex today. But I also built a custom MAME machine out of an Asteroids machine using a b&w vector monitor and special build of MAME to play Star Castle on a real b&w vector monitor, and the proper leaf-switch buttons layout too. I even have an original screen overlay from the arcade machine for it. Again, I think Atari made a big mistake in not porting Star Castle as originally planned. Maybe that title needed to go to their 8 bit computers & 5200 system though. But the Vectrex was hard to beat. Yar's Revenge is no substitute for Star Castle
This game gets nuts.
How have I never seen this!!!
Great video! Never heard of this game before; just walked into a game shop and picked it up
I always thought The Challenge of Nexar was closer to Tempest. Great game, one of my favorites as a kid. Check it out if you haven't already!
I remember reading an interview with Mark Turmell in "Electronic Games" magazine circa 1983. He said he always wanted to name a game "Turmoil" b/c of his last name, and "It had to be fast". I'm not sure "Tempest" was on his mind when he wrote it though. I see it now but I didn't back then.
Turmoil was fun.
Turmoil is one of the best Fox games. That and Fast Eddie. Quick and addictive.
Jon is responsible for my ebay budget being reduced. 🤣 thanks Jon! Just ordered the game. 20th Century Fox really did have some great titles !
No, no. You are responsible. I'm just TO BLAME! 😁
The gameplay holds up today
Thanks a lot Jon, good stuff buddy 👍
Any time!
Absolutely love both these games but star Castle is my favorite of the two and it is hard to find anywhere. I would absolutely love to find a copy of this game Star Castle.
I do remember seeing this game and wanting it so bad as a kid. Unfortunately, never did get it. Would not finding an actual copy to play on my ColecoVision with the "Atari" adapter.
Need Turmoil Recharged complete with the NBA Jam announcer!
I did think it was an attempt to do Tempest on the 2600.
Another Turmell games is Fast Eddie. 5 Nights of Fast Eddie would be worth doing.
The only other example I can think of along these lines (reinterpreting 3D as 2D) was a bizarre version of Klax on the B+W Game Boy (there are two versions, BTW, one "flat" and one 3D).
It sounds like Plaque Attack (from Activision for the 2600).
Great game
Reminds me more of Tapper/Root Beer Tapper than Tempest.
Fun stuff!
Thanks for the the upload!🤘🏻👍🏻🇺🇲 Decent game for the time.
Excellent 😊
There's a ColecoVision version of Turmoil now. I don't know if it was created from scratch or just a port from the MSX computer.
On the Commodore 64, if you are looking for a Tempest like game, try Axis Assassin or Star Post. Even though Assassin more closely resembles Tempest, I think Star Post is the better game.
This actually reminds me of Jawbreaker for the Atari 2600.
It's a shame there is no European version of this game. I'd really wish to have it in my collection
I wonder if a) Disney got the rights to this when it bought the 20CF assets, b) Fox Corp. retained the rights, or c) the rights had been sold off years/decades ago.
0:56 - Surprised you didn't briefly touch on the actual 2600 Tempest prototype. It makes the playfield look like a pair of underwear.
Haha! Very accurate. 🩲
The real Tempest inspired 2600 game is Beam Rider.
Oh, yeah. Great candidate!
cool shirt
You know what it reminds me of actually is Tapper! Which actually has a great Atari version!
"Rapper?" An Atari game? Not familiar with that one. Which platform?
@@GenXGrownUpoops! Typo! (Fixed it) Tapper!! LOL. Obviously a lot faster paced but similar mechanics.
@@jimcampbell Aw, darn it! I thought I was about to discover a hidden gem! 😁 Yes, I can see the similarity to Tapper, especially with the "run down the bar" mechanic to gather tips.
ha. and thanks for replying. As you pointed out in your video, i see a lot of your videos just because they are suggested and i dint realize i hadn't subscribed until now. Now I have! cheers!
Is this controlled with a joystick like most VCS games are?
I really prefer the way Tempest doesn't have all the extra back-and-forth both horizontally and vertically that this game has. In Tempest you can concentrate more on your position and what's coming up at you.
Turmoil still looks like a great game for the 2600, but I prefer Tempest.
It's a standard joystick control.
Its too bad the tempest prototype for the 2600 was never polished up and released back in the day. Turmoil kinda reminds me of taz and a team
Also, Galaga + Tempest = Gyruss.
💜
Visually looks like Pick-Axe Pete.
how are you playing this (og hardware, emulator, Atari 2600+, etc)?
Your father made the electronics TV?
Your family name is the brand your father used on his tv brand?
Sure
Does the racing spinner work? If not, is there a hack to add it?
No. Joystick control. That wouldn't allow you to grab the prizes before they turn into cannonballs.
@@GenXGrownUp Fair enough! But I feel like, since there are 2 buttons on it (I think - been a hot minute since I've seen one!) the other button could be 2 presses: 1 for swapping, then again to get the goods
@@DryPaperHammerBro Just one button on the Racing controller (well, one per wheel). And a button combo wouldn't handle the prize-fetch mechanic in Turmoil unless you made it automatic, which kind of dilutes the reason for it.
