Still didn't explain what each one means

Course rating is what a scratch golfer should expect to shoot on a normal day and a bogey rating is a rating based off of a golfer who would normally shoot 90 where a scratch would shoot 72, slope is the difference between the bogey rating of the course and the (scratch) rating of the course multiplied by a factor (I will admit, they didn’t give us the factor, but I looked it up and it is 5.381 for men and 4.24 for women). So if the (scratch) rating of the course is 74 and the bogey rating is 95, (95-74=21) you take 21 and multiply it by a factor (for a man) of 5.381 and you get 113 (which happens to be the standard slope like 72 is for rating). Slope is solely for comparing golf courses, unlike the rating which can be used to compare to a player’s score as well as use for comparing courses.

@@justwondering1967 that makes so much more sense. Especially since the bogey player will more likely mess up more on a harder course (in a compounding sense) than a scratch will on a harder course. If a scratch is likely to take 4 more shots than normal, then a bogey golfer will likely take something like 12 more than normal.

@@justwondering1967 So if I understand correctly I'd say course rating is a measure of the degree of difficulty of the course for a scratch player, and the slope rating is a measure of how much harder it gets for higher handicap players. Maybe a more open course with more forgiving rough would be more likely to have a lower slope rating than one with nightmare rough whenever you wander off the fairway, but neither of those situations would be so likely to affect the scratch player?

Good. Apart from i still dont know if the higher the number the harder or easier...vice versa.

It would be helpful if you added the formula to this.

ONE IS YOUR ABILITY , So say 15 , you need 15 strokes to shoot nett par.
Next well something that club can do called to par , as i understand this that means say course is hard ground then the ball will go further so instead of par of 71 they could change it to 69, but unsure, the other is 95% to match the world courses , so 13 is what you get. Plus now men and women play in the same comp they can play off the same tees red yellows so that will change also on how many choose what tee .this is not gospel but thats how i go about it .
Its like stableford now , we are told just record your score if a tripple over you record no score so say on a par 3 you get 3 shots and you have had 7 you can pick up put 8 in which is a no score pick up.

I know a few courses where the slope is way lower than it should be

We need example of slope differential. It’s easy to understand courses ratings. But slope is harder to figure out

This video actually doesn't explain slope rating at all.

We at our club like all your clubs have a whs board women and men .
Now women play in the same comps a men . But thats where at ours it differs.
If females play from yellow like the males .
The males give women 3 shots.
Whether the women play from red or yellow they use RED INDEX .
Then whs think its too easy .
So in their wisdom they think
    Lests say 18 hc
Too easy so lets make it 17
Easy still so course handicap 16.
But the 3 shots given to ladies come off yep its 13 now.
I ask if a player gets x shots that means he/she is that good , but no they are 6 shots better.
    Just to have a chance.
Well ladies and gents i played to compeate .Well they took that away.
I played to have fun , And that has been removed.
I also played to meet people that so far is still there , but for how long .???
