  • tfw the carburettor cut out the engine again
Early in its development, the Merlin engine's lack of fuel injection meant that Spitfires and Hurricanes, unlike the Bf 109E, were unable to simply nose down into a steep dive. This meant a Luftwaffe fighter could simply "bunt" into a high-power dive to escape an attack, leaving the Spitfire behind, as its fuel was forced out of the carburettor by negative "g". RAF fighter pilots soon learned to "half-roll" their aircraft before diving to pursue their opponents.

One of my nana's defining memories of the Hull Blitz before she was evacuated out of the city involved something similar.
She was 7 years old at the time and in the cinema with her mum and baby brother when the sirens went off.
As per normal if not at home they evacuated and headed down the street to the public shelter with a Bobby or ARP Warden.
Nobody was particularly rushing as they usually had a good fifteen minutes or so before the Luftwaffe actually arrived overhead.
Unfortunately on this occasion a lone Stuka dove from "out of nowhere" as she described it, and opened up on the crowd, strafing them with it's MG17s.
Luckily only several people were hit, more than likely from ricochets and fragmentation, but that was the final straw for my great grandma, and had both kids evacuated to rural Lincolnshire until the end of the war.
War is hell for soldiers and civillians.

Your sitting in the Trenches, exhausted and freezing. It has been snowing for the last couple of days, fairly harsh for your standards you’ll have to admit so harsh that the little Christmas Tree you and your Mates put up is almost complete covered in Snow. While lighting one of the few Lucky Strike Cigarets you have left from your Ration, you suddenly hear this song coming from a distance, everything turns quiet almost as like there Is no war going on. You look over to your mate seeing him whisper the lyrics makes you think of your loved ones at home, as you proceed to stand up to treat yourself with a hot coffee (we’ll not the best tasting but better then nothing) all hell breaks lose all you can do is drop the Tin Mig you had in your hand and fall back into Position. Like a lightning strike you arrive back into reality and it’s brutal honesty…
