Dust sucks! - Whether you are in your workshop, garage, in the house, or on the job-site, sawdust is no fun! It makes everything messy, it takes forever to clean-up, and it is extremely bad for your health. Wood dust is a known human carcinogen (can cause cancer). Wood dust becomes a potential heath problem when the wood particles become airborne and are inhaled. The best way to combat wood dust is to never let it get air-born, and the best way to do that is to collect it right at the tool.
There are other ways to combat airborne dust but that is for another blog.
Bosch 14-gallon Dust Extractor with Automatic Filter Clean - VAC140A
The Bosch VAC140A is a phenomenal dust extracting unit with a great combination of air flow and suction power. It also has the ability for wet pickup with an automatic shut off if the liquid level gets to high. This prevents damage to the power unit (motor) and filter. When paired with a HEPA filter (sold separately), it meets the EPA of a HEPA vacuum.
With many features that set it apart, the Automatic Filter Cleaning (AFC) is the most prominent. The AFC button is located on the front of the unit. It will pulse 3 times, ever 15-seconds, to back burst the filter keeping it clean and free of dust. This keeps the unit performing at max capacity.

Power Tool Activation
A power outlet that is located on the front of the unit allows the user to plug their power tool into the front of the dust extractor. This allows the user to set the VAC140A's power switch into the "Power Tool Activation" mode and simply power their tool on and off and the dust extractor will do the same.
This is a great time saver and keeps the user from forgetting to turn on their dust collection.
Power Broker Dial
The Power Broker Dial is a great feature that allows the user decrease the AMPS that the VAC140A draws. This can accomplish three things:
The power tool may draw too much power and cause the vacuum to have lower power and suction. Simply decrease the Power Broker Dial and give more power to the tool.
The suction that is required for certain applications, such as sanding, may benefit from a lower suction to optimize the fine dust collection. Simply lower the AMPs and decrease the suction.
When the user is on the job-site and maybe using a high AMP tool in conjunction with the VAC140A, the user may trip a breaker. Especially if they are using an extension cord. Adjusting the Power Broker Dial and decreasing the AMPS, the user maybe able to complete their job on a lower AMP breaker and not trip it.
Hose and Cord Wrap
As simple as this sounds, hose and cord management is very important anywhere. When we are in the workshop, being organize is both a utilitarian and physiological thing. We want the workshop, job-site, or work vehicle to look nice and organized. This allows us to be more efficient, less stress, and have a better mood while working.
Simply wrap the hose and cord and the unit looks organized and isn't a tripping hazard or gets caught up with other cords or equipment.
Conclusion
If you are someone that wants a dust free environment with a unit that is much more than a Shop Vac, then we highly recommend checking out the 14-gallon VAC140A with Automatic Filter Cleaning by Bosch. The unit does an exceptional job at collecting both fine dust and large chips while the AFC keeps the filter fresh and the performance to the max.
Pair this unit up with a tool that has quality dust collection capabilities, and it is sure to keep your dust problems at bay. - Jak na to + styl
Very good review!!
Nice review of that high-capacity Bosch shop vac. Missing, however, was an impression of how loud the thing is in use. I would have been nice to hear you briefly trying to talk over it while it was turned on and to have you compare its loudness and tone with other shop vacs you have used. It does seem to be a real workhorse of a vacuum, so I now have it in mind as a possibiity for purchase.
Brian Reedy it's very loud and my one has a very annoying low flow alarm that goes off too often
I bought one of these and it's going back - it very noisy but the worst bit is the automatic filter-cleaning. Every 15 seconds there are 3 really loud bangs as it blows back on the filter. Ear defenders don't stop them and I found it intolerable.
@@cristofacar I find it strange that almost all information and reviews fail to specify that autoclean is a serious nuisance (very loud percussive bangs) and is ONLY REQUIRED FOR EXTREME FINE DUST APPLICATIONS (drywall / cement dust) as this dust would bypass a filter bag. For all other applications, a filter bag and no autoclean is preferred. Even more annoying - on most vacs autoclean is switched on by default and must be turned off each time.
I just purchased this vacuum. Why does it say in the owners manual to leave the afc on with hepa filter and this video says to turn it off
mike mireles Andy misspoke, keeps the AFC on with HEPA filter.
Great. Thanks for the reply and the video
Are you happy with it still to this day?
How does it accomplish the dust extraction? Is it simply the filter that does that? Are there any units that integrate both a vacuum and a Cyclone-like dust extraction device in a portable unit?
Currently I've made a cart with wheels that I built and put both my vacuum and my Dust Deputy dust extractor on it.
yes.
No
Yes
yes
Never turns it on and we can't see what it does. Great review.
Is it loud? How many dB?
What is the default mode (active or not) for the AFC when you turn the unit on? If I want to use the vac with AFC off, am I required to turn it off every time I turn the vac on?
Daniel Flather default mode is on.It means when the unit is turned on the afc is active. I consider this a flaw.
Hi,
I bought this vac since I commented. You're right, as I was :P, when you turn it on it defaults to on. It's easy to turn off, so I don't consider it a fault. But, why bother selling an auto and manual version. Just sell the manual version and it will serve both users' needs. Odd choice by Bosch.
Other than that its an awesome unit!! Low noise, good cord and hose storage. I can't stress the cord wrap and hoce wrap enough. Good wheels and frame handel too.
Also, the hose and power cord remain flexible in the cold. My garage only gets to -15°C and the flexibility is excellent.
euhm, euhm, euhm, really gets annoyning after some time but nice review though
Nice unit. How loud is it.
Great vid. This would be a solid dust extractor to have
Why the tape on the side? Is this indicating the good german "quality" :D?
Bag seal
Just assume from now on, that people watching your video have no idea what a dust extractor is or what it does. Just a quick overview would do.
why i say this thing suck
Need to go back and count how many time you said uh or uhm.
Why? You ve better things to do? Where is your perfect video... 😅
