- During his latest sit down with DJ Vlad, Cassidy gave his opinion on the new school of rappers in hip hop claiming that 'Mumble Rap' should be a category by itself. The Philly rapper presents the OG idea where bars were the forefront of the genre more so than the image of the person on the mic. He also asserts that this current breed of rap stars are too friendly, and discusses the effect of his legendary battle with Freeway, what has changed in his relationship with Swizz Beats and his trajectory as an artist, before diving into a punchline heavy freestyle.

Mumble Rap is it's own category. Most of them aren't lyricist but I don't agree that all of them aren't, being a lyricist myself, I can clearly see where some of it has branched off into a mix. I also don't believe that lyricist should be trying to better one another. A former friend listened to a mix I made and said my cousin Marq Musiq bested me on my mix, he didn't understand that the whole mix was one long song and that no one was competing with anyone else. It has never been about duality, it was always about unity, growth and being in the momment of the momment.

I'm a chic who grew up in the era of rap of Big Daddy Kane, KRS1, Tupac, NWA, Snoop Dog, Master P, Pimp C, Scarface, Lil Flip, Bow Wow, and etc. I agree with the comments about today's rap game and mostly I don't get it but the beats are cool. Everyone has their likes and dislikes but the late 70's, 80's, 90's and the first 10 yrs of the 2000's is what I can get with.

Me personally, I make my own beats and search for other beat makers to make beats. It's not going to change my sound, I know what beats I would make for myself so when I look for beats, I look for my sound. Some artisy may need inhouse beat maker's but some of us don't. Truthfully It's a bunch of almost artist out here. People who have a few slices but not the whole puy, but those two pies is what got them in, them or their label knew how to find the rest. The best thing about being a true artist, is that you don't have a time limit for a song nor do you have to wait for projects to be approved.

I can see how the caliber of nas raps could be opinioned to not match with his beats. The thing about a lyricist like nas is that it's hard to find someone just as Ill in producing lucrative, witty, awe inspiring beats as he is in writing lyrics. I think the only producer able to match his style is definitely alchemist and then premiere. Dre did extraordinary work on the firm album though (a heavily underrated album at that!!). It was written seemed to have the best beat selection across the board for nas though, but it's a borderline between that and illmatic.
