Visiting Venezuela (it’s nothing like what they say)

  • Should you visit Venezuela? In January 2024 I went to the South American country despite all the travel warnings saying I shouldn't. What I found was so different from what I'd heard. And I managed to fly a 45 year old 737-200 at the same time. Here's a look at what I found around Caracas and Barcelona, Venezuela; including some travel tips for what to do in Caracas.

    There's no doubt that Venezuela is a beautiful country. There's no doubt that life in Caracas has changed in the past couple of years. What's still uncertain is what would happen if an American citizen found themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. Tourists from other nations would likely have no problem because their nation likely has an embassy in Venezuela. The USA does not.

    • @airedition
      @airedition  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Yes a fair point, mitigated by the fact that an American citizen would likely not be allowed in. However I have heard about some sneaking in and that is a very bad idea. As long as you’re there legally as a tourist I don’t think it’s in the governments interest to mess with you. Just my take, I admit I could be wrong there!

      An American white guy find himself in the wrong place at the wrong time in Texas, he will be in trouble (anywhere in the world). However, if you find yourself in any place of Latin America, use your common sense, that will help you avoid unnecessary risk.

  • @devilmansanchez
    @devilmansanchez Před 2 měsíci +5

    This is the experience from the POV of a tourist that has access to good standards of living in their own countries.
    Those of us that lived and have relatives living in the country, the typical Venezuelan, have a widely different experience. Not exactly a pleasant trip to the Avila eating nice food and going around without a care in the world. More like days without electricity, poor water quality, inaccessible medication, no opportunities for the young, and dangerous criminals.
    Mr. Leigh also showed beautiful puppies at the end of the video. In Venezuela, street dogs are the typical, and one can usually see starving dogs walking around the streets begging for food.
    I'm happy some people can still enjoy Venezuela. But is a shame that Venezuelans are not among them.

    • @airedition
      @airedition  Před 2 měsíci +2

      Of course it is, and I state as much. This is a limited look at a particular experience of Venezuela. The point being that most potential visitors still think they will be walking into hell on earth, and that’s not the case at all.

    I’m sorry you are getting negative comments from small minded people. They probably are the kind of people that have never left their hometown to travel. Venezuela is like every country. It has poor areas, nice areas, dangerous and safe areas. How naive to not realize every part of the world is like that. Thank you for sharing this video! It seems like you had a lovely time! Sending blessings to you.

    • @airedition
      @airedition  Před 3 měsíci +2

      Similar travel warnings have been issued by most governments for Venezuela, so US antagonism doesn’t fully explain the disconnect from reality. But, these things can be slow to get updated. As for danger across Latin America, yeah, in general terms I’d say it’s a region you should visit with some idea of what you’re doing, some experience, knowing what to expect and what places and situations to avoid. But very few cities I would tell someone to skip entirely.

      Your hostility is so utterly misplaced. I acknowledge in the video that there are still many problems there and that I’m only scratching the surface and that I’m not looking to get into the politics. Furthermore I never claim to be doing an investigative documentary about the real situation in Venezuela, just showing how surprisingly safe and pleasant it is in the places I saw. Which was true, and very counter to the picture we get outside. And actually a lot of Venezuelans who are still there (unlike you) are really happy to see it portrayed as more than just a crime-ridden hell hole. So, maybe chill out when you’re talking to people on the internet, and find another outlet for your very real and valid frustrations about the way things have gone there. Attacking me is not the answer.

    I went there in 1990 and it was pretty awful ..... everything was so poorly built ! it looks really third world and in 1990 I didn't feel safe at night. At first glance it looks ok but when you're there, standing in front of it all, it's really crappy. I hav been to most of South America and it was the crappiest of all and the one with the least amount culture (it feels very generic).

      No sé a dónde habrás ido, pero sí o sí estás haciendo una generalización absurda. Solo para conocer Caracas en su totalidad tienes que pasar unos 6 meses viviendo ahí. Imagina el tiempo que necesitas para conocer a todo el país. No hables de algo que realmente no conoces.
