This is not the type of vessel you would choose for deep sea sailing as the leeboards can be a vulnerability in heavy weather, and losing one far out to sea might be a big problem. Of course, in their day they had to sail in all weathers which they did quite admirably. The design of traditional working vessels generally evolved from the environment in which they worked, with improvements made over time until they could not be bettered! Sailing barges (seen all around the world) are focused towards coastal and inland environments, and you would choose a more oceanic-focused vessel for more ambitious sailing.
