Prečo sa musíme naučiť mať radi hmyz
V niektorých oblastiach za posledných 30 rokov vpylvom ľudských aktivít ubudlo až 75% hmyzu. Dave vo svojom talku analyzuje príčiny tohto úbytku, popisuje pravdepodobné katastrofické súvislosti spojené s úplným vyhynutím hmyzu a odporúča konkrétne zmeny, ktoré pomôžu jeho diverziu zachovať alebo obnoviť. Professor Dave Goulson grew up in rural Shropshire, UK, where he developed an early obsession with wildlife. He received his bachelor’s degree in biology from Oxford University, followed by a doctorate on butterfly ecology at Oxford Brookes University. Subsequently, he lectured in biology for 11 years at the University of Southampton, and it was here that he began to study bumblebees in earnest. He has published 300 scientific articles on the ecology and conservation of bumblebees and other insects and is author to a numerous books, including the Sunday Times bestseller A Sting in the Tale, a popular science book about bumble bees now translated into ten languages. Dave founded the Bumblebee Conservation Trust and was given many awards for his work. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the BBC Wildlife Magazine listed him as the eighth most influential person in conservation.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I've just converted part of my garden into a wildflower meadow, got the wildflowers planted, will shortly be sowing a selection of meadow grasses, can't wait to see what selection of insects, pollinators & butterflies appear once it all gets going.
Haven't got a large garden but have a small log pile, a twig pile & planted some native guelder rose compactum along with other dense shrubs which will hopefully give the visiting hedgehogs somewhere to nest naturally, if they'd rather not use the hedgehog houses out in the garden, hoping for an increase in insects so the birds & hedgehogs have more of their natural diet like caterpillars & beetles.
Here's a list of some of the wildflowers I've planted, birdsfoot trefoil, oxeye daisy, primrose, cowslip, Yarrow, lesser knapweed, red campion.
I've two insect hotels & the first one I put up had quite a few residents as lots of thir holes have been plugged up.

How very sad that this EXCELLENT lecture has had only 7881 views. It is very informative and inspirational. Yes our world is a difficult place and our way of doing something about it can be in the food we choose to eat and how we tend our gardens. It’s an important message.
Without a healthy insect population the earth is doomed.
If you watch this lecture please tell your friends about it and you will be helping with this global problem.

Decrease in the biodiversity of insects is really an alarming situation.

The guy is right, they are vital to us too, we need more education on the good they do than the very little harm, the hoverfly being a prime example.

Thank you for interesting and funny video. Best wishes and good luck! If you have some insects pests, you can show it to me too, just for identification.

My mom never let me get a real pet, like a dog or a cat, so I always picked insects of the floor and put them in the biggest tub I could find, give them leaves and stuff like that, in the end they always escape, I let them be free most of the time, if I can see if they don’t like it, one time I petted a would louse and my sister accidentally stepped on it, 3 days ago was the anniversary of me finding him, it was so sad 😭

I wish people would wake up and connect with nature more and not live in their own little bubble and think outside the box. If not for our survival for our children's survival.

today i found a fruit fly in my bread which had honey, instead of just tossing it to the bin, i lifted it out with my stencil and allowed it to get up on it's feet and then placed it outside my window to go back to life

Great stuff. I missed your talk for NOGs in Nottingham on Saturday so was told to find you on youtube. I actually grew up in former Czechoslovakia so it's nice to see you've been to Bratislava! Luckily Czech and Slovak people are a little bit more relaxed when it comes to mowing their lawns but everything else is pretty much the same... I could happily murder my own sister who doesn't like 'messy gardens'!

couldnt agree more, but we need our policians to incentivise farmers by making any money they get to be in proportion to how biodiverse their farmed land is. unless we get farmers to put back the hedgerows they were paid to rip up, and the ponds they were paid to fill in and the meadows they were paid to 'improve'....then our species is doomed to become extinct in the not too distant future.
