  • ** This is an update of earlier versions with further improved sound quality and an exciting additional Mendelssohn sketch for the transition to the 2nd theme, which was included by Adrian Gagiu who helped me greatly to revise the work, for which I am very thankfull! **
In 1845 while living in Frankfurt Felix Mendelssohn was working on 2 wonderful movements for a 6th symphony in C-Major (shortly before he begann working on his Elias oratorion and in the same year when Schumann wrote his 2nd symphony, also in C-Major).
0:00 I. Allegro ma non troppo
For the first movement a full score of the first 2 minutes exist and furthermore sketches for further passages .The beginning always reminds me of a bright new morning. This fascinated me so much that I tried to complete this to a whole symphony. After bar 79 further Mendelssohn sketches were included and elaborated:
    m. 81 - 93: transtion to the 2nd theme
    m. 107 - 116: 2nd theme
    m. 146 - 150 ending of the exposition
    m. 152 - 165: beginning of the development
    m. 196 - 204: canonic passage
    11:57 II. Andante cantabile
I also completed the wonderful and very melodious sketches (for the first 2:15 minutes, marked in yellow) for an Andante cantabile movement with variations on the beautiful main theme .
Movements 3 and 4 are planned by the use of my orchestrations of 2 string quartett movements from op. 81 (see 22:40ff from my first YT video:
    • Mendelssohn Unfinished... )
This is shall give you an idea of how a 6th symphony by Mendelssohn roughly might have looked like if he had finished it. For me working on this project has been one of the most satisfying works of my life...
Recorded digitally with NotePerformer, but hopefully the day will come where this might be performed by a real orchestra ...

I adore the theme that occurs at 1:35... very heroic!

I'd just like to point out that trumpets couldn't play chromatically back then. They were restricted to the notes of the harmonic series. If you look at what Mendelssohn wrote, his writing is strictly limited to those notes. I don't think a completion that doesn't take this fact into account does justice to Mendelssohn.

@@gerdprengel7616 Otherwise you did a great job, just remember to always do the full research before creating a completion. 😉

@@gerdprengel7616I'd like to add onto that; horns were also limited to the harmonic series. I would write whatever key Mendelssohn originally set the brass to and have it only play notes from that.
Also, transposing instruments don't switch very often within movements, so I would tacet clarinets, horns, and trumpets wherever the key isn't right for them. For example, I see there is a moment where the key goes from 0 sharps to 3 sharps. That would be a moment where the A clarinet could be used instead of the Bb.
