I just realized the yarding mechanism is in the back on bash and dash… which makes sense. It’s a bit hard for your engine to see where they’re going if a giant gear is obstructing their view.
Then there’s gonna be a LINE OBSTRUCTING THEIR VIEW but the gears aren’t too high but a bit too high so they can’t see a bit

The worst part is that I think these characters had a lot of potential, especially Ferdinand.
In their solo episodes they’re given more personality than in this entire hour long movie. Dash is creative with how he tunes his whistle, bash is sensitive and feels uneasy when he’s away from his friends, and Ferdinand is a silent gentle giant. If in the hands of a better writer I think the logging Locos could have worked (however I just say they’re from America rather than making up an island that people somehow have never noticed throughout the hundreds of years people lived on Sodor.
I find it funny how Misty Island actually inspired me to write an AU about Ferdinand being less annoying. Maybe I should try doing the same for Bash and Dash as well.
Out of curiousity, is he also a different Engine? (Climax Locomotives were notorious for being prone to breakdowns.)
@@foxxojones4757 I kept him as a Climax, but he’s more of an industrial engine to help with shunting cars around the logging mill.

The real engines also do not have much under their running boards, I think their front axles is floating. Bash and the other guy do not float, in some scenes you can see there’s supports on their axles
The twin’s yarding mechanism goes inside their cab and out the other side.
Ferdinand is a Class C Climax locomotive.
If I were to make two more characters for Misty Island, and I mean two good characters. One would be a 3 Truck Heisler, and another would be a Class D Shay.

Many years ago, long before I started a CZcams channel, I remember watching a video of a model live steam engine (basically an O gauge equivalent engine that runs on actual coal) of Gypsy, and I wondered if that engine was in fact the basis for Bash and Dash, since it's small boiler and elongated wheel arrangement fitted that of Bash/Dash. This video has since confirmed this years-long wonder, and I thank you for that (and thanks for covering their history as always. Didn't know that they originated from California from all places.)
These were made in 1:20.3 scale AKA Fn3
I was already aware of the basis for the Logging Loco Twins but what really blows my mind is that it is preserved! Like, what!

4:00 I saw those two exact locomotives in a short scene in the DVD Real Tank Engines made by Golden Rail Videos. I never knew that I would recognize them.
I scratch built bash and dashes basis since I needed a bash and dash for my upcoming thomas layout but instead of making them goofy and chaotic I want them to actually be hardworking and not psychopathic.

As a Timber Heritage Association member, who has ridden a train hauled by each of the two Gypsys years before becoming a member, in the end, I’m grateful for the publicity that atrocious movie has brought us. Although, since the Falk, being direct-drive and with that mid-tone 3 chime whistle, is my personal favorite of the two Gypsys, I’m glad her design wasn’t used in Misty Island Rescue. I wouldn’t want the public associating the Falk with that terrible movie.
I’m honestly not surprised because every Thomas character has a basis, and no matter the horrible writing and episodes the characters appear in atleast the look cool!

Gypsy locomotives, generally, were too weak to actually pull cars. For this reason, it was rare to see them with any form of coupling. When they did have couplings, they were more for pulling the engine out of where it had been positioned to work as a yarder, than pulling cars. There were also more than just two variants. There were, honestly, several. Eight or nine types. Some were home built by railroads, others were built by producers. The most common one was the 1/2 type. This had two pistons, one that drove the axles under the engine, and one that drove the yarding system through reduction gearing. This one was actually rather simple to convert over, with the driver simply needing to pull a lever to close off the valve and switch where the steam went. The design was popular, as it was easy to move around, and had an added bit of safety as you couldn't both have the yarding system going as well as the rail drive system.
So, how do I know this? I'm one of the dev team for the game "Railroads Online". While we aren't planning to ever include these as something the player would be able to operate, or interact with, given that they're a part of logging history, it is something I've looked into, rather extensively.

I have a feeling everyone on Sodor DID actually notice the island, they just didn't care until they urgently needed the jobi wood. That's the only thing I'll defend the movie about. That and the song. Tbh I personally think its a banger lol
Gypsy engines are really wacky. Hell, logging engine in general are just beyond wacky. Sometimes just boilers mounted on frames in awkward positions with a pair of cylinders and a really odd arrangement and are just built different. But that was just a big price saver, and I love that fact, it’s so goddamn funny to think they just found a boiler at scrap value, threw it on a frame of an old Flatcar and made it run. Don’t get me Started on geared engines either!
Personally I like Bash, Dash, Ferdinand and the movie itself.

I did enjoy these characters, however, the writing and lack of character development leaves a lot to be desired.
But I think if it were up to me, I'd change Bash and Dash into 0-4-2 Porter locomotives. Something that would be a little more practical.
I respect your opinion on those characters. BTW, have you seen the Spongebob episode "Patrick! The Game"? It was a really good one and felt like a classic episode, especially the fact Squidward bought his misfortune upon himself.
I gave them better development in my own series.
I personally think that Bash and Dash would look a lot better and more realistic if their CGI counterparts were more accurate to their real-life basis. Just saying.

@@user-pi2wp8un3f Well from what I can remember, I watched this movie back in like 2015. The entire island is basically a logging refuge. I think they might have some contraption to auto load themselves. Furthermore, Its quite strange that thomas was able to connect to the rails seemlessly first try. As a kid, I didnt really notice this but what in the world are the chances. Must be textbook definitetion of plot armor. I mean I could use that excuse for honestly everything, but then there would be no point to do anything. Im going to research more.
